I know that there are a very small group of people out here who are as insane as I am for RPG's. So I figured I'd post another lame thread about (yeah, you guessed it) RPG's.
Anyway, although this can be a really open discussion about RPG experiences and stuff, the question is which RPG was the best for which system. And I'd kinda appreciate at least a short reason as to why it was the best if that wouldn't be straining anyone too much.
What's the appeal of modern RPGs anyway? I dig those choose your path games, that's why I loved kotor but most rpgs leave me cold. Well except for dragon quest but those games are far to long for me to ever complete :(.
As you may or may not have guess, one of my all-time favorite RPGs is Skies of Arcadia. THE reason to own a Dreamcast, if you ask me. Along with all the other reasons to own one, that is. Like Jet Grind Radio or Grandia II.
Speaking of Grandia, you can't go wrong with either I or II. I have yet to play III, and XTreme shouldn't have existed, but I absolutely love the first two. In fact, I think I might just replay those sometime soon.
And what RPGer would be complete without a heaping helping of Earthbound? Funky music, groovy battle backgrounds, and quirky everything else, I loved it so much that I imported Mother 3. Excellent game.
As far as the Final Fantasies go, my favorite is VI, for its excellent characters and story. IV and V would be second and third. I can't say I really enjoy any of the FFs beside those.
My first RPG, and still one of my favorites, was Shining Force II. Amazing for its time, and still fun now, it was a great RPG.
To wrap this post up, how about some Xenogears? Incredibly deep storyline and characters, not to mention awesome gameplay that was just hard enough to keep me interested without frustrating me. Damn fine game, and one that I think everyone should be required to play.
Most Japanse RPGs are the same old same old.
I like Grandia's combat system, very fun. thats why i play it (not for the story line).

Talking about Skies, theres that RPG this year thats copying it. called Rogue Galaxy. Cell shaded Pirate Air ships?
I've recently realized that I'm not into standard RPGs. I can handle Zelda-esque games like Landstalker and Crusader of Centy because they're mostly adventure titles, but 'standard' Japanese RPGs? I just don't care for them.

I suppose it depends on what you classify as a "normal" Japanese RPG, but I tend to like the genre as a whole.
Admittedly my favorite type is the SRPG, although that's mostly just bias over Shining Force, but I like all sorts of types.
I had a great time with Shining in the Darkness, Beyond Oasis, and Dark Wizard. I liked Lunar, I liked Grandia, I liked Panzer Dragoon Saga. RPG's are just my games of choice and I have so far not played a single one that I didn't like in some way or other.

My favorite RPG's would be the Fallout 1 & 2 and Final Fantasy VI and Tactics. I love those 4 games with all my heart.
Other than VI and Tactics, the only other FF games I like are IV and V. The rest are just bad to mediocre.
Panzer Dragoon Saga was an outstanding game.
I'm halfway through Albert Odyssey and it's a pretty decent RPG. Nothing spectacular or outstanding but a solid game either way. I started playing Shining The Holy Ark but didn't get that far in. From I played so far, it looks interesting so I'll be sure to finish it when I get time.
Despite the negative stuff I heard about Legend Of Dragoon, I really liked that game.
Shadow Madness was a godawful game. Funny story on why I bought this game... about a year and a half ago I read some forum posts about an anti-Final Fantasy RPG player. He'd be constantly talking about RPG's much better than Final Fantasy games. His favorite one was Shadow Madness. The guy had me convinced for a bit so I bought it on ebay for 10 bucks. Wow... it's a really bad game.
For the PS2, I loved Summoner. It was one of my first PS2 games. Everything about the game was excellent. It just had this old school feel and unlike piece of shit kiddie games like Grandia or Kingdom Hearts that I abhor with all my heart, this game was dark. Everything from the music, to the dialogue, to the story, to the locations, etc. Just fucking dark. I beat it 3 times because I love it that much. The sequel was pretty damn good but not as amazing as the original. It had a lighter atmosphere and the character models looked a bit cartoony but still, a solid storyline with great characters and still retained some darkness.
I'm 3/4's through Radiata Stories. I enjoyed the game a lot at first but now it's getting a bit boring. I'll finish it up one of these days and play through it again to get the other ending. It's a pretty light hearted game but is able to keep itself from being a stupid kiddie game. I'm also halfway through Star Ocean 3. It's very fucking cliche'd but has a very great storyline. The cliche-ness of it is nerve-grating but I'll try to finish it one of these days.
I recently got Phantasy Star 2 and started playing it. The music is terrible and feels very out of place. Now that I refilled my color ink cartridges I can print out MORE MAPS :) YAY! Wow seriously. The dungeon design is... I don't have words taht can describe it. I had to level up for 3 hours before my characters were strong enough to finish the 2nd dungeon. Despite the difficulty, I know I'll finish this game.
I love all styles of RPG's, be it action RPG (The Bard's Tale for PS2 is one of the funniest and greatest games ever made) to standard RPG to strategy RPG (Dragonforce <3333) I love 'em all... except Vagrant Story... seriously wtf was that...
BTW, if you know of any dark RPG games please reccommend me some. I heard good things about the Shadow Hearts series but haven't had a chance to play them yet...
I never actually played Evolution. I would've, but I ended up selling my Dreamcast in an act of stupidity that I've never forgiven.
But... they're all just great. These days I've been working on completing my Saturn collection. So if any of you have Saturn RPG's, then you'd best sell them to me before I steal them. *Evil Grin*
Am I to be drawn and quartered for bringing up Final Fantasy 7? Yeah, it's not as amazing as it seemed when it came out, but it's a great big game with tons of stuff to do and really interesting settings and snazzy dialogue. It's still one of my favorites.
I also like the whole Dragon Quest series, though admittedly I like the first 2 mostly for nostalgia value. 3, 4, 5, and 8 are awesome games, however.

I won't murder you. I've already had my rant about why FF7 is the pits, so there's no reason to do it all over again. Anyway today I'm focusing on the best RPG of the 32-bit era, SF3.
Although I'm in the middle of about 50 RPG's altogether. Heh.
Another one I really liked was Suikoden. Anyone here played it?
