You prefer the free-roaming of SF2? I can see why you'd like that, but I still think that the free-roaming caused some problems in the game and it really wasn't as good as the others. And SF3 is superior in almost every other regard, so it can't really compare.
SW is great, but you know you can just hold down the B button to stay at your speed. And it's not that hard to build back up. Anyway they're both awesome games. Dragon Force anybody?
*sigh* I completely missed out on Dragon Force. And Panzer Dragoon Saga. And pretty much anything on the Saturn that had the word "Dragon" or its varients.
Honestly? I like the story in SF2 more, as well as the free-roaming gameplay. I've never been able to get into those chapter based RPGs. That and I remember the loading times of SF3 sucking most hugely. Then again, that could have been because I was playing it as my Saturn's drive was failing.
I did love the soundtrack, though. Motoi Sakuraba is one of my favorite composers of all time. (Even if his work in Star Ocean: Til the End of Time was lackluster compaired to most of his other soundtracks. Then again, it wasn't really "bad," it just wasn't in the beautiful ethereal style of music that I associate with Sakuraba.)
The loading times was due to your saturn's failing most definitly. SF3 has only the slightest slowdown at any given time.
I love SF2 to death, but it had many faults that I think most of the other games avoided. The characters were more irritating, the music was mostly awful, the graphics were too bright and colorful IMO, and though the story was told in a more fancy way it was much more infantile.
I won't go into depth though unless you want me too. And I feel sorry for your loss of the amazing Saturn experience... Magical Knight Rayearth, Albert Oddessy, Blazing Heroes...

So, one of the things I hate about console RPGs is that none of them...well, save for a couple XBox ones, anyway, few of them autosave. Just today. Dragon Quest VIII.
Me: Woo! Two level ups and some new equipment! Time to save!

And now I know I won't be able to bring myself to play the game for at least a week.
That is indeed terrible. But you know, there's some pretty reliable Saturn emulation if you want to try that out.
I still have not been able to find proper saturn emulation.... Oh well.
Me i'm mostly an RPG gamer so i'm glad a topic like this came up.
Oh and that power surge sucks.... I had it once while playing FF7.....
Ditto. What are these reliable Saturn emulators of which you speak? Or, at the very least, where can I get a Saturn repaired, or find a guide to repair it on my own? I remember seeing one somewhere, but darn if I can remember where.Quote:

I played the first two a little bit. I didn't care for them particuarly and moved on. I'll probably go back and play them some time though.
As for Saturn emulation, if you can run the latest version of SSF then that's pretty dang solid. The graphics and the music aren't as good as they'd be on an actual Saturn, but they're better than on... oh say Cassini.
Anyway you'd have to configure it for the best results, but at Shining Force Central there's a person in the SF3 forum, topic Team SF3, who has a tutorial of how to configure it for the best results when playing SF3. You might want to reference there.
I did really like IV. It was just...too easy. I did like the story and dragon designs, however. Speaking of which, they completely screwed up dragon transformations in IV. Whatever happened to the oh-so-awesome gene system? Well, regardless of its gameplay problems, IV was pretty good.Quote:

I don't play much in the way of RPG's, but I buy a few for collection, but ONLY if they aren't too expensive, or a good deal.
I don´t know, I don´t get the emulator to start at all.
No configuration-screen either...
Is my PC to weak? It´s a 2 Ghz with 512 MB RAM and an old Geforce 4 ti.
I can run N64 and PlayStation almost perfectly though...
... I have no idea why you can't get it run. If your PC can handle N64 and PS emulation there's no reason why it shouldn't be able to handle this.
DavidJ, what RPG's do you consider a good deal then?
Weird. Until not too long ago when I upgraded my video card and added some more RAM, that was my computer. What kind of processor though? Mine's an Athlon 64. Y'know, I should just make a "Post your computer's specs!" topic.Quote:
