You know, I was about to refute that statement, but I think a lot of old-school RPGs really are better. Not the 8-bit ones, usually, but the 16-bitters. They had music, gameplay, story... now if only we could get some good retranslations I'd be happy.

The only RPG subgenre where I prefer new to old would probably be strategy RPGs. Don't get me wrong, the Shining Force games are great, but they don't have the wild awesomeness of Disgaea, La Pucelle, or Phantom Brave. Then again, those probably belong in their own subgenre...like "crazy strategy RPGs" or something.

Shining Force is all that you need for strategy RPG's. *starts drooling*

In all seriousnes, Shining Force are the best damn strategy RPG's that I've ever played. That doesn't keep others from being good though. Just less so.
