They made version for Master System and decided that it's enough... which is total bullshit, Genesis needs original Shinobi.
Super Shinobi aka Revenge of Shinobi from 1989 is better than any other Shinobi game, and they ported Shadow Dancer: Secret of Shinobi the following year. And then there's Shinobi III from 1993. - I doubt any console got as many Shinobi games as Genesis.
There are 3 Shinobi games on the Genesis aren't there?
Arcade Shinobi is very different from Revenge and an excellent game, though. I wouldn't call Shadow Dancer a port since it's a completely unique game. Shadow Dancer is probably the closest thing to the original arcade Shinobi on the Genesis, since it plays like a mix of both arcade games (Shinobi and Shadow Dancer). Anyway, even with those three other games, since Shinobi is a great game in its own right, it still would have been nice for it to have its own Genesis port.
I think they initially planned a port but instead decided to create a brandnew Shinobi tailor made for the Mega Drive hardware. A wise decision as Super Shinobi is the best game on the platform.
hey, you take that back =P
And some would agree with the latter... in fact I think quite a few did postulate that in a recent thread. (definitely better than SMB2J -as was Doki Doki Panic, but iirc several comments about preferring it to SMB1)

I think his point is that SMB2 and SMB1 are different games, not who would agree with it. Just because the Genesis has three great shinobi games doesn't mean that a more accurate port of the original wouldn't be welcomed along with them. While the Genesis made out extremely well, it was disappointing that an official version that is more accurate to the arcade hasn't come out until recently (I know of the PCE port, but that is missing the knife move and a whole stage).
The SMS has three Shinobis (4 if you count Alex Kidd in Shinobi world), as well. It got a port of the first Shinobi, a port of the arcade shadow dancer, and Cyber Shinobi. The less said about the latter two, the better, though.
Also, aside from the Genesis, the Game Gear also made out well with two original Shinobis. One of the few instances where the GG made out better than SMS. I only have the second one, but it's not only a great Shinobi game, but also one of the better games on the system.
The Super Shinobi II (aka Shinobi 3) is a masterpiece. Period ;)
I like the original Shinobi, but not as much as the Genesis Shinobi games. I also like Super Mario Bros. 2 better than *any* other Mario game.
Well, at least all of you Mario 2 lovers out there got to have Mario 2 and Mario 1 on the same console... ;)
I bought Shinobi first on the SMS, then on the PC-Engine, and finally on the NES. Then I bought an Arcade cabinet with a bad monitor that I have never replaced. ;)
Seriously though, Shinobi is a very unique game compared to the Genesis series, and was quite old by the time the Genesis came into play. To my knowledge even Revenge of Shinobi and Shinobi III were only moderately popular among consumers. Forget about Shadow Dancer ever being heard of by the mass market.
Revenge of Shinobi is to Shinobi what Super Mario Bros 3 is to Super Mario Bros., They refined the series that far at the very launch of the Genesis, and still kept the feel, and style of the original arcade game Imo.
I personally would love to have the Arcade game on my Genesis/CD but I can understand why they never ported it over, just wasn't necessary.
On the 32x though, its another story. Shinobi is a better game than Space Harrier if you ask me, especially with the Sega Arcade joystick(Space Harrier was meant to be played with a mission stick style of controller, wich was never released on the Genesis.). As little support as the add on got, why not port over games like Shinobi, Revenge of Death Adder, Super Monacco GP(arcade), Outrun? Perhaps the games would've sold well packaged in some sort of "Special Collectors Arcade Edition" line.
I do find it kind of odd that they did release the best port of the game on one of its main competitors in Japan, the PC Engine(no bonus rounds though):
Nearly arcade perfect, Awesome Music!!!
The lack of close range attacks, bonus rounds, and level 2 in the PCE game should have been a deal breaker for me. But the core gameplay, for the available levels, music, sound effects, graphics and animation are the closest to arcade home version of Shinobi before XBLA.
I have no doubt that the PCE could have handled an arcade conversion with all of these positives and none of these negatives. Shinobi on SMS might as well be a different game, and the NES port of the SMS game is intrinsically flawed.
I would have payed full price for an Altered Beast quality (4mbit huge trade offs, more scrolls) quality Genesis adaptation at or near launch. That is, as long as Revenge of Shinobi would remain unchanged.
Exactly. I think sometimes people forget that these companies are in business to sell games and make money, not to please retro gamers 20 years later. It's always easy to look back and say "I wish they made this or that", but our wishes for today are not always what gamers would've actually wanted back then. Sega wouldn't have been concerned in 1989 that there was no perfect port of Shinobi.
Golden Axe and Altered Beast were new games and current arcade hits at the time, whereas Shinobi was not (and thusly had already received a Master System release). Sega had likely already decided to make a sequel, so porting the original game would've made little sense at the time.
Didnt the Arcade 'Shinobi' appear an unlockable on one of the "Genesis Collections" on PS2/3 or something? I know its not on the Genesis, but at least it is a home port.
*runs off to go check...*
EDIT
Its on the Genesis collection for PS3/360, to unlock it you have to finish the first level of Shinobi III without using a continue. :)
Check out the Sega Ages series on the PS2. I can personally confirm that the Space Harrier collection AND Galaxy Force collection both support Flight Sticks. I use the Namco Ace Combat 5 stick/throttle for both. :D
I REALLY need to get Afterburner though...
Nearly arcade perfect indeed! And that music is very close to the arcade version!
I look at it this way. If we got a port of Shinobi, which more than likely would have been a launch title. We probably would never have got the awesome Revenge of Shinobi. I'm glad Sega took the time to develop an all new game for their new system. That's my $0.02.
Oh well, it seems that the game IS on my Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection.
So I guess one can say that it did appear on the Genesis after all... ;)
Exactly. One of the reasons I played Shinobi 3 to get the Achievement to unlock Shinobi Arcade.
And may I also say, when I bought my copy of Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection it felt damn good seeing a game on the shelf with a picture of Classic Sonic! Mmmmmm.......nostalgia......
The Mega Drive also has two Rolling Thunder Games, which are fairly similar in a lot of ways to the original Shinobi.
Isn't E-SWAT somewhat similar too ? and I think it was made by the same team.
Kind of, but not much (this is in regards to the Mega Drive E-Swat, I have no experience with the other versions which are completely different games)
E-Swat has much more complicated gameplay than Shinobi 1, with loads of weapon options and an emphasis on its jet pack feature, making it less about reactions and more about tactics, E-Swat also gives you an energy bar.
Shinobi, and its two most like sequels Shadow Dancer, and The Secret of Shinobi, all have minor ties to the Rolling Thunder series, as the first Shinobi game was generally considered to be a Rolling Thunder rip off when it originally came out.
Pretty ironic when you take into account that Namco effectively spent most of their lifetime ripping off Sega's arcade games.
I mentioned these in this thread and, don't forget, there are many guys...err it got Alex Kidd in Shinobi World, as well.
It's kind of impressive, but it tries a bit too hard and the limitations of the port like less animations and less parts of levels let it down a bit. Return of the Joker is a bit more playable and doesn't try to shoehorn oversized sprites in a way that hinders gameplay.
Wii VC got a nice emulation of the arcade shinobi. BTW, I understand why SEGA didn't do a port of Shinobi to the Genesis, but I don't understand the beef with people wanting a port of it, especially since Genesis can handle it better than the SMS. I mean it's unrealistic to expect sega to do one and homebrew programming is a bear, but I think the replies have been at bit harsh.
The missing knife attacks (which I mentioned in a post in this thread) are a huge omission, which imo makes it far from the best port (c64 verision is surprisingly good and has the knife and I found the sms one bettter since it has all stages and the close up attacks). its closer than the sms in some aspects, but im surprised the major gameplay issues with the port dont turn more off. pardon the lack of caps and punctuation, i broke my right wrist when i fell while roller skating and am typing with one hand (right handed).Quote:

Yeah, I think it is possible to make Genesis version of the original Shinobi based on Shadow Dancer.Quote:
I think that the PCE version is a very good one, but if that is not enough, why not try to develop a homebrew port for Genesis?
Nah, forget that!
We need a Shinobi mega collection... ;)
We can do it based on the TG16 game, just adding more parallax layers and porting the audio form the arcade(YM2151 very similar to YM2612)
i don't get mame coming up whenever an arcade game is mentioned. it has issues with lag, glitches, speed, and sound for some games, some games aren't supported, and most games it supports aren't played legally (not that a shinobi genesis fangame is any more legal). i'm fine with playing the arcade shinobi on the wii. m2's emulation is solid too.
I also generally don't like the music in MAME or compilation disks (which I suspect use MAME). Nice complementary background music really makes or breaks a game for me. I enjoy very few games that have subdued or generic (to me) soundtracks.
