A bug? :?

No, not a bug. An unfortunate, freak occurrence yes -- but one which has nothing to do with the software.
As game save erasures go, I've never personally encountered the problem with any "TV" console games (except one for the Super A'can, but that entire system is suspect). However I have dealt with the situation numerous times over the years with original (b&w) Game Boy games: I play a certain game for a while, save my progress, the data is stored on the cartridge for a specific period of time until *BAM* it's erased one day for no apparent reason. Then I can start a new game, play for a while, save my progress, and the save data stands the test of time. I'm not a technical enough guy to explain how or why this happens with certain games, in certain situations, but it can be a sad fact of life.
I didn't know about that. Thanks for the explanation.
It seems to be more common with SFT games, both mine and Joe's Beggar Prince saves (from two different runs) were erased and I've read three guys in this thread has had their Star Odyssey saves erased. This is one reason why I don't agree with this "highest quality" claim from SFT.
This happened a lot with older chinese bootleg games here in Russia back in the days. Like Phantasy Star 2, Story of Thor. There were two reasons
1) shitty batteries
2) shitty soldering and as a result - fucked up power supply. The battery held memory a little and after some time it was dead again.
it's all a\bout sram games of cause not the flash ones. Flash ones can have other issues
@CMA Death Adder
3 jobs? Oh dear, how do you do that?
Now that you are back, please tell us what the deal is with the MEGA POWER of Star Odyssey.
You write itīs a 16 Mbit game, yet the japanese version was 8 Mbit.
So do you mean by 16 Mbit game that you used a 16 Mbit chip, while the actual data is still only about 8 Mbit?
I enjoy working and the challenges associated with my work.
No, that wouldn't be cost-effective. The game ran over 8Mbit in due to the size of the new script, the new programming, and added bits like the cut scenes (graphics + sound + programming) restored from the Japanese version, our company logo and its accompanying jingle, and the modified "Star Odyssey" graphic on the title screen. As for how much space over 8Mbit this data takes up, I couldn't tell you; I haven't reviewed the binary for quite a while, and I don't presently have a copy of it on my machine. However, Star Odyssey is a 16Mbit binary.
About the saves getting erased... I am wondering if it might have something to do with the user-replaceable batteries. Granted, it shouldn't be a problem but perhaps some carts here or there are slightly loose in that regard (the batteries are not soldered on). I want to shake my Star Odyssey cart around like that gorilla does with the suitcases to test this, but I think I'd rather beat the game first.
The batteries in my copy were snug when I checked. Also, note that my saves started out by getting corrupted, with garbage symbols partially replacing the name of one character -- it's not like they just disappeared, they were first hit by obvious data corruption. If battery power had been lost, it seems more likely to me that the saves would've just vanished outright, rather than become corrupted.
I describe what happened here in more detail, but the main thing is that I hadn't removed the cart or jostled the console, or done anything else thing of note between when I powered the game down on Saturday night, planning to beat the boss the next day, and when I fired it back up Sunday morning. I'd even unplugged the console from the TV and the AC adapter, so overnight power spikes aren't a possibility.
Having said that, I haven't tried replaying the game and seeing if the save battery works normally. I'll give that a shot when I return home next week. I'm willing to accept that it's probably a freak occurence, but to be totally frank I don't see how it's metaphysically possible for Brandon to be certain it's not a bug in the code, or a problem with the hardware design. Sometimes these things only show up 1 time in 1000, or depend on super-specific conditions to happen. OTOH my copy of Light Crusader had its savefiles go bad after sitting idle for a year, so these things happen, but they're more troubling in a game with fresh batteries.
Was the corrupted name of the character a custom name? The battery power may not have been terminated long enough to completely erase the file. It could have been unpowered for a nanosecond or so, just long enough for it to be corrupted.
Of course, this is only a theory and I in no way suggest this is what actually happened.
Gah! I'm at some boss who blocks nearly ALL of my attacks. It's a pain in the ass because I cannot save before him and I am sick of wandering through the damn cave with the shitty girl who dies right away in ANY battle (completely useless). So I can only attack with two characters and they are usually blocked. ALL of the other bosses in the game have gone down in 3 hits or less.
RPGs obviously were not the designer's forte. I think I like Wukong better than this one. But both this and Wukong are better than Beggar Prince. At least these have more working code than bugs. Beggar Prince was a collection of bugs in a cartridge, nothing more.
For those characters that were "wussies" from the start (specifically May and Quam), I always used the strongest two characters I had and combined them with one of the wussies. I usually had Toby or Grim or Gus do the whole battle, and the other strong character would be used to defend the wuss (May or Quam) until they leveled-up enough. If the enemies were too strong, I'd also use the wuss to defend him/herself. But if the enemies were weak enough, I'd use the Wuss to fight (even though they'd do very little to no damage, but just so that I could get acquainted with their specs).
Get acquainted with each of the "defend" force combos and other such defensive strategies. They're quintessential for when you want to level up your wussies. and they become the most important element when you take the Force Master down to the source cave of her planet .
I think Level 20 was an acceptable level for your wussies, then 30 as one approached the last world.
Also:
@Brandon:
Was there a strategic reason for not including the Changeling or the Force Master characters in the manual? I understand the Force Master might've been a bit of a spoiler. Is that why?
Beat the game yesterday. Never lost my game saves. Never got stuck anywhere, either, I don't think. The last part was the toughest, though.
QuickSciFi, I powered Aura up to level 12 but she still dies in one hit since she cannot be equipped with any armor or defensive items AT ALL.
Toby is also useless, even at level 32 he is one of my weakest characters, doing the least amount of damage in battle with his super-wimpy BRAIN weapon.
If you are in the Planet in question with Aura (is that her name, then?), then the best thing to do is to grind a bit more with your strongest characters. Don't worry about Aura at the moment. I don't remember what other characters you might have at your disposal, but Gus, Rick and Grim are all great, as well as Toby, if you have the right weapon (the Brain Sword is useful at the end, but one of the guns actually strikes better with him). Once you feel comfortable enough to walk around that planet, anywhere, with just two of your strongest characters without getting killed, then it's time to incorporate Aura and take her down to the cave system. You need to bring her with you in order to enter the "special" chamber. Through magic (force) or otherwise, always use one of your characters to defend Aura in mid battle.
A third move in mid-battle you must also do is to heal-up your other characters. I'd also use Aura, or any of my Wussies, to heal themselves from the start and at all times. Sometimes two hits would kill them, so I'd make sure that no matter what they'd stay alive. It may seem like overkill, but at least you'll get her down to that secret chamber.
Only Toby can use magic. I know she needs to be there to get in the room but I'm not convinced she needs to be there for the battle. I am thinking of dragging her dead corpse there and getting in to the room and then dragging her dead corpse back and returning with someone else.
You guys should play Sorcerer's Kingdom if you haven't. This is where you turn from an alpha male to a pussy in the end FAST.
That's exactly what you should do. I didn't mean you'd necessarily make it to the room with her alive ;). Just try your best if you have to. She'll miraculously come back to live as soon as you get to the room. I remember Quam died on me once and all I needed was to get his dead body to its destination. Then he suddenly came to life (it's kind of like other RPGs, where they're not really dead per se, if you must, they're just mortally wounded).
And then she miraculously dies again once her task is complete.
lmao
Briefly, here are some bits of information in regard to some of the recently asked questions. As usual, move your mouse pointer over the text in the black boxes, in order to read it. But beware, mateys, for thar be spoilers ahead!
1). Descriptions for Gole (the Esperian changeling) and Aury (aka "Force Master") were not included in the game's instruction manual because I wished for their appearance in the game to remain a surprise to the players. While Gole appeared in the original Japanese instruction manual, Aury still did not.
2). Once she has equipped the Crystal, Aury can use Force magic. In fact, once she's been levelled up enough (which is no easy task), her Force ability is the strongest of all the hero characters in the game.
3). Aury doesn't need to be alive for the characters to meet and engage in combat with the boss Astrodon, but Toby does need to be equipped with the Brain sword in order to defeat him.
That explains it then. I was going without Toby.
Late reply to this post but I figure better late than never. I have indeed played the NES Dragon Warrior games, and I absolutely love them. Dragon Warrior III is a perfect game and I never really felt 'lost'. Dragon Warrior I didn't have a very large world so it was easy to figure out where to go, the grinding was rather fun. Dragon Warrior II was quite linear in the beginning and finding the crests wasn't too hard and it is closest to how Star Odyssey plays. Dragon Warrior II is of course a much better game.
However, those were NES games, not Genesis. Compared to Phantasy Star II and III, Star Odyssey isn't too bad of a game, it may not be nearly as fast paced but at least the dungeons aren't too confusing.
Sooooooo anybody get their copy in the mail recently?
well my game arrived a few days ago and all i can say is what an absolute shoddy package i recieved,
i have not had time to upload pictures but i plan to! the box was frankly fucking pathetic, worse than a second hand box. this , unfortunetly, will be the last product i purchase from SUPER FIGHTER DABEDOZEEEEE TEAM as i hate to say but your actual finished product is a fucking joke
so im supposed top be like ' oh mr cobb, thankyou for releasing 'new' games for my prized system, no matter what state the box is in when it arrived. keep doing what your doing' . fuck that
same as beggar price, same as wukong. shitty cheap as piss materials used
you live on the fact that us hardcore retro gamers will buy any old shit you release for our prized system, you are the fucker who supposidly individually sends these packages out. did you even look at the state of mine before sending it?
i have waited since the release date for this piece of shit
what a fucking let down you are COBB
---- await your condescension , as always
still waiting on mine sent an email the other day but no response as yet
This has to be the highest quality product so far produced by SFT, imo. After playing through Star Odyssey, I can't wait to see what Brandon will release next. I keep making mention (as many have) that the writing, and translation, in these games is superb; and more so than ever in Star Odyssey.
@Brandon (aka. CMA Death Adder): I know it's been some time since the release, and I've been waiting for the propper time to ask this, so: Is there any news on any future project SFT might be tackling/pondering-upon? Another Genny RPG, perhaps? :D
im entitled to my opinion,
what in that post entitles me to a ban?
i waited an age for my game, it arrived and the plastic is coming away from the case on both sides, the box looks about 1/3rd skinnier and about 1/4 of the quality of an original game. i bought a 15yr old game the other day for Ģ3 off ebay and its in way better condition than this.
the quality isn't good enough , simple as
Still waiting.. and hoping that mine comes in ok shape. Hey why don't you let Brandon know? He might pay for the shipping to exchange it.. or at least I think he should.
I wonder where Brandon has gone, because I sent the payment for the game on saturday 20th and was expecting to get a confirmation email about the received payment, but I haven't heard from him. I also sent an email on tuesday to check that he received the payment, but no answer.
Yeah... I'm sure everything is all right, but Brandon if you're reading this, please check you email!
He only has a dial-up internet connection. You are asking a lot.
He'd need 4 if he had a broadband connection.
