if it's your first Bass...pick up a cheap accoustic bass....any will do spend no more than say $80 - $100 on it...if you find one cheaper go for it.
You want to find a book which will teach you, any will do really.
Don't go about learning off youtube videos the quality and techniques vary to greatly to be any use to a newb.
when you get confident and good, then look at purchasing an Amp, electric Bass and stuffs.
Bass is one of them instruments which is really to pick up and really difficult to master.
so when you get the basics down, like how to tune, play a note, timing, finger or pick etc then move onto speed and finger exercises.
I bought a new bass guitar the other week and im in love with it! my thumbs never hurt so much (slap bass)
i didn't even know they made cheap acoustic basses. Shows how long its been since I bought a guitar. They used to be fancy stuff.
Personally I'd get a cheap Mexican Fender Jazz or P bass. I prefer the Jazz myself. I haven't been the market for an amp for awhile but I would just get a small practice amp for $100 or so. The best part is you can practice with earphones and not torture anyone at 3 in the morning. You could probable eBay the amp.
I just pick it up and try not worry to hard about the technicalities of it all. Just get going and get over the fear of playing it. and have fun with it. Many people don't get over that part. When you are comfortable with that the rest will come.
Thanks for the info,I am hoping get into slap bass.I'll check around town then.
