My vote goes for the Saturn.
I'm going to say that the Playstation is better but I enjoyed the Saturn alot too. Sega Saturn is a very uniqe console indeed.
Most games that people said were "good" on the PSX were crap.Saturn all the way.The PSX had no real soul to it.
Playstation just had a much larger library of games to choose from,
and many of them were great games.
Playstation for the win.
Yeah, I voted PSX for the library as well. The poll is a bit vague... what is meant by "better"? NeoVamp and I interpreted it as which had more games that were better overall. It could have easily been asked - better RPG, better 2D, better 3D, better race games, etc. In some things, the Saturn has a clear edge; in others, the PSX. So while I voted for the PSX, I'm not saying the Saturn is therefore bad.
Games: PS1
Controller: PS1
Hardware: PS1
I didn't own a Saturn back when it was new. It's really growing on me now though, and I probably like it more than the average person who grew up in the 90s.
I voted Saturn even though the PS1 has a larger library because it saw at least five more years of full blown mass market releases. I own many times more Saturn games than PS1 games despite having owned both for over a decade.
Also, the proper Saturn digital pad and the Saturn 3D gamepad simply rule.
I don't get why the Playstation controller gets so much praise. In my opinion it's a very uncomfortable and awkward controller.
saturn, better 2d games, sega arcade games, and way better controllers.

LET ME SHOW YOU IT!

Lets see, lets do a vs topic between the PS1(one of the best systems ever), and the Saturn, which unless you lived in Japan, you got shafted big time.
This Isn't a fair pairing at all, the PS1 blows away the Saturn np, the PS1 has a huge library of awesome games, so huge that the Saturn can't make up the differance, plus the PS1 has Greats as well(which means the Saturn doesn't even have an overwhelming advantage there either).
SATURN FTW! Large library does not make one great!
By the time the Playstation actually gained a large library of "awesome games" I was playing the Dreamcast too.
Not quantum physics, just context by release date. ;)
I'm sorry, but I always felt the PS1-Saturn list was the weak link out of your timeline comparisons, the others i've found helpful and interesting in the past (I've used your website on and off for years now), but the PS1 one is missing too many games IMO.
Funny, my Saturn came with this:
http://www.axess.com/twilight/consol...l/saturn_a.jpg
This comes up as a statement from time to time. List the games that aren't there with one or two reasons why they should be added. I've polled Usenet, read gamefaqs reviews, and constantly kept the lists updated based on what comments I find. The game list excludes only sports titles, and games people jump up and down about but can't explain in any way. Seriously, I would be shocked if any of the existing "notable" games lists increase by more than ten or so. I have never excluded any game recommended for any specific gameplay related reason.
I have PSX games I still play today (albeit on my PSP), but I rarely play any Saturn games. I got my Saturn to try a few games that are supposed to be great, and to branch out from the 32X in homebrew eventually.
Well, using the Saturn games list as a benchmark, I would say that the following games are at least as good as, if not better than Clockwork Knight/High Velocity/Goldenaxe: The Duel/Three Dirty Dwarves/Mr Bones
Sorry if there's some here already there that I missed
1. MDK
2. Return Fire
3. Broken Sword
4. Shipwreckers/Overboard
5. V-Rally
6. One
7. Micro Maniacs
8. Relentless/Little Big Adventure
9. Lomax
10. Guardian's Crusade
11. Zero Divide
12. Rogue Trip Vacation
13. Speed Punks/Speed Freaks
14. Vanark
15. Wild 9
16. TOCA
17. Rapid Reload
18 Civilization II
19. Fade to Black
20. Circuit Breakers
21. Apocalypse
I'm not really up for the arguing a case for each one at the moment, maybe I'll do that in the future but at the moment I don't feel up for it (maybe someone else on here could :D)
Lets see, quickly -
MDK - great action game, great art design, excellent sniper rifle and some cool grenade throwing puzzles
Return Fire - blow everything up game, fun capture the flag split screen multiplayer, influenced some other games of the time like Mass Destruction.
Zero Divide - its not amazing, but is definitely a good, entertaining, solid, fighting game for its time (certainly more in depth than stuff like Toshinden) its a 3D fighting game with robots in, has a hang on the edge of the ring move (don't remember that in earlier games) and there's an armour system too. The later iterations of the series became less and less competitive over time.
Wild 9 - platformer made by the Earthworm Jim people, nice grapple the enemies mechanic where you can throw them into environmental hazards
I voted for Saturn, but I count both among my favorite systems.
PSX has more fond memories for me, so it got my vote.
Playstation for me alot better games library. Saturn is a odd console let down badly by not having a proper sonic game to go up against crash bandicoot which i liked back in the day but hate now and Mario64 still has a few decent games though
I think it is okay, but the buttons were loose and the D-Pad wasn't as tight as the Genesis 6-button pad or the later US Saturn pad.
Great response, I can't believe this one isn't in there. This is the reason I periodically go back to read some online reviews. I vaguely remember some RGVSony denizens being fairly adamant about not bothering with console ports of PC games Added it.
- 2. Return Fire
Return Fire I do remember being discounted in favor of Black Dawn even over Thunderstrike on both systems. I can't figure a reason why Return Fire shouldn't be on the Saturn and PS1 list can you? -edit- Return Fire for Saturn was never released. My mistake. Added it to the PS1 and will probably add it for 3DO when I finish that list.
Thunderstrike I know is flawed, the jets fly out of visual range, which is about three inches from the helicopter and only the HUD can target them.
3. Broken Sword
A point and click adventure with control issues on the PS1 that requires illogical puzzle solutions. Notable indeed. Added.
4. Shipwreckers/Overboard
2D Pirate Strategy game. Added.
5. V-Rally
Consistently complained about for confusing controls and replaced by McRae.
6. One
Stinking hard, very old school Contra in style and MGS in cinematic boss fights. I always thought this one should have been on the list. Added.
7. Micro Maniacs
FoxKids Micro Maniacs? Sounds like a party game racer, it's never been pointed out to me before. Added.
8. Relentless/Little Big Adventure
I can't find anything about this one that sounds different or especially well done.
9. Lomax
Nothing on this one either.
10. Guardian's Crusade
Odd ball children's RPG with items that attack you if they don't like you. Well, that's unique alright. Added.
11. Zero Divide
Sounds like a bad generic 2D fighter with 3D graphics. Added for the ring hang mechanic and armor system.
12. Rogue Trip Vacation
Twisted Metal, Crazy Taxi, Sand box game? Sure, Added.
13. Speed Punks/Speed Freaks
A Mario Kart 64 clone, how is it unique or especially well done in gameplay?
14. Vanark
Sounds like a competent and late rail shooter. Added.
15. Wild 9
This one is fairly uniformly trashed as a poorly conceived 2D shooter with a gimmick, but people talk about it. Your explanation is good enough to add it.
16. TOCA
Same as V-Rally.
17. Rapid Reload
A Gunstar Heroes attempt on PS1 is all I found shortly. Is there something more to it?
18 Civilization II
A PC strategy title on a console that adds control issues and longer than acceptable load times.
19. Fade to Black
I anticipated this one quite a bit before its release. The best thing that has been said about it is that it could have been worse.
20. Circuit Breakers
It's a racing game, that's all I've got on it.
21. Apocalypse
Tons of reviews on this one, none of them seem to be able to say anything besides mindless shooting as its merit.
-edit- edit-
To make it easier to find games that have not been noted I have changed the default setting to include the entire US libraries. I'm working on a fix that will allow the Saturn and PS1 libraries to be displayed together like this.
Are there any rail shooters on the PSX that beat Panzer Dragoon or Zwei? (I know there's a few really notable ones but I can't remember some of the titles... There's Omega Boost of course and Zeit Geist came to mind but that one's not that great iirc)
I don't think there's anything on the Saturn to compete with the Space combat sims (or some of the better free flying/combat games in general) on the PSX and even the N64 doesn't have much to stand up against the really sim-style gameplay of the Colony Wars games or Wing Commander ports (not sure how good those turned out compared to the DOS/Windows games) and Rogue Squadrong and BFN are sort of a different genre in that sense. (more comparable to Warhawk in some respects, more arcade like in control and game machanics -lives damage modling, weapons, etc- than the PC style sim-like space games)
I'm always hearing "for the percentage of good games to bad , the Saturn wins"
I say I care more about the amount than the percentage. If you have 10 titles with 50% quality rate, you get 5 good titles. If you have 100 titles with 10% quality rate, you get 10 good titles. In this case, I much rather prefer to have the latter.
Anyway, let me say that I do enjoy both systems and have both hooked up and ready to play. Just that I've given more of my playtime and my preference to the Playstation. So that's the way I voted.
I could never live without both.
But we all know the Playstation (including import libraries) has sooo many more games of various genres compared to Saturn.
Plus the huge selection of peripherals for Playstation outclasses Saturn by far.
The GunCon and associated games beat out the Saturn light gun games.
The Sony Analog Twin Stick controller and Assault are far more enjoyable than Saturn Twin Sticks and Virtua On.
The number and variety of classic/retro compilations on Playstation can't be touched by Saturn.
The variety of unique and quirky games on Playstation is unrivaled by almost any system.
Heck even Tatio's Power Shovel has it's own twin stick controllers manufactured by Hori.
The number of joysticks and variety is much broader for Playstation. Though the Saturn dual arcade stick set up and the other official arcade stick by Sega JPN are certainly better than most any stock stick for Playstation except maybe the optical ASCii Stick Zero 3
Anyhow there's some thoughts off the top of my head.
Playstation just has so many more interesting and enjoyable games than Saturn.
But I could never give up my Saturn and games like the Panzer Dragoon series, Three Dirty Dwarves, D&D Collection, Guardian Heroes, Radiant Silvergun, Dark Savior, Shining the Holy Ark, Mizubaku Adventure, Power Drift, Vatlva, Daytona USA Circuit Edition, and others...
Gamera 2000 is pretty much a complete Panzer Dragoon Zwei rip-off/clone.
It is almost pretty good ...but the cinematics and acting (all with American actors) are downright painful.
I just couldn't get into it though because all I could think is how much I'd rather be playing Panzer Dragoon Zwei. Comparing these two games is also notable because it is an instance where the graphic qualities of the Saturn game are much better than the similarly styled Playstation game.
I'm going to say Saturn, but its mostly due to much better controllers... Sony made the worst controller imaginable *avoids bricks*
Both machines have a ton of awesome games on them, and for some reason Saturn games seem to be a bit nicer to me, and I have played much more PSX games than Saturn ones.
Micro Maniacs and Circuit Breakers were both related to the Micro Machines games, Micro Maniacs was Codemasters' attempt to move away from the license I think (which was costing them money) as well as allowing them to add new gameplay elements (like jumping etc), Circuit Breakers was made by the original Mega Drive Micro Machines developers after they moved away from Codemasters.
V-Rally and TOCA are weird ones in that they were extremely popular in Europe (both with the public and critics) but don't seem to have been that well liked in the US at all, I think they were actually the biggest selling racing games in Britain in 1997 by quite some margin. Personally I always kinda' prefered V-Rally to Colin Mcrae only because its more arcadey and less technical, I never got so much into TOCA, but some of my friends played it religiously and I remember some of the magazines of the time rating it very highly
Zero Divide is quite a solid game, but time of release would play one of the bigger factors to its "notable" status I think as at the time there wasn't really enough 3D fighters on PS1 for it to be generic (this was before Tobal 1, Tekken 2, or Soul Blade were released) magazines scored it highly, stating that it was the only PS1 game with a fighting system similar to Virtua Fighter
Speed Freaks was mainly known for being one of the first good 4-player Mario Kart style racing games on PS1 (though it only pre-dated the better Crash Team Racing by maybe a month) whilst CTR is better I think Speed Freaks is more its own game, because its more technical and rally-like in its control system, whilst CTR just feels like an amagalmation of MK64 and DKR.
Its possible that feelings for Wild 9 are mixed, but I feel "unifomly trashed" is unfair, I have most definitely seen at least 4 good reviews for the game from the time.
Apocalypse really is just mindless shooting and jumping, with some iffy voice clips from Bruce Willis every now and then, but its a brainless, fun game
I only have a problems with the analogue controllers, the normal controller feels alright for me to use.
Playstation gets my vote because of the games. Symphony of the Night, Final Fantasy VII, Soulblade, Tekken Series, Vandal Hearts, Lunar completes, among others. Yes there are japanese versions of these, but I don't read japanese and I sure didn't know that back in the 90s when I was gaming, nor would I pay extra at the time with my teenage income level to import when the playstation games were easily available, not to mention all my friends had it so sharing games and multiplayer were easier.
I own a saturn now and not a playstation. However for the games available to me at the time (not to mention the intro cost) playstation gets my vote by far. Saturn is underrated, but it's obvious why it lost. You didn't just google a search for imports in the mid 90s and have several sites deliver good games, and why should you have to? They didn't bring the right games over to support their system and they lost, it's that simple.
saturn is my favorite especially with the japanese library, but id say the ps1 was the best in terms of its library,it had games for everyone.
Resident Evil series on the PS1 FTW
One of the few games I have played in my life that isn't 2D or a beat em up.
Sega Saturn all the way.
I still appreciate the PlayStation as the second option of that generation, but the system I have always liked and collected is the Sega Saturn. There's a significant difference between both systems, and that's a fantastic Sega.
The PS1 had a large library where many of the games were crap. The Saturn had a small library where many of the games were crap... Really if it comes down to owning one I'd go with the PS1 because even if only about 10% of the library is of interest to me, that's a lot more games than 10% of the Saturn's library.
