Emulate it and buy AC.
Zebbe will say it is the ultimate MD experience and must be in anyone's collection. In my opinion, get something like Battle Mania Daiginjou instead :P
One of, if not the best RPG on the Genesis. Most assuredly worth it.
It's my favorite rpg of all time, and my favorite genesis title. I'd say it's worth it if it's in perfect shape. I'm not exactly sure what the us dollar equivalent is, but you can get a pretty minty copy here for 50 us dollars. Although you pal guys get an actual plastic clamshell so that makes it easier to swallow.
Oh and the sound on every emulated version/collection I've played is a bit off.
ok guyz just bought the game now and now its time for the waiting game xD
Congratulations! I'm sure you will be pleased.
Glad u got it man.
Just wanted to mention that my favorite game was previously Sonic 2, from the time I got it with my Genesis (along with Sonic 1) in '93 or so. Nothing topped Sonic 2 EVAR until I played PSIV a couple yrs ago, and it clearly became my favorite game EVAR.
PSIV is just the best evar.
ENJOY and let us know how you like it!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you, Im really looking forward to playing it tbh since the only RPG I have finished on the megadrive was Landstalker which I really enjoyed. I also pre-ordered Pier Solar too and Im look forward to that one too :D but yeah when I finish playing it I will let you know what I think of it ;).
Cool, if u want, tell us ur 1st impressions once u get it also.
(1st impressions for me were awesome.)
I'm also waiting for my copy of Pier Solar which will be amazing, especially that I get 2 soundtracks, since I have the Sega CD (mo. 2), so I'll be able to switch between both soundtracks, I believe. Can't wait. Also my only other Genesis RPG I've played thru: The Immortal, which is bloody & awesome.
Just be mindful that you may have to change the battery in the cart.
A little while ago I made the silly mistake of playing through Super Metroid without changing it as the battery hadn't died yet. Half way through my game it went. Along with all my saves :(
It would be even worse with something like Phantasy Star IV.
^there are tech-savy forum members u could mail it to, to replace ur battery...
I don't think I would do it personally, unless the memory wasn't working....
Raul has spoken. Yes it is a damn amazing game.
cr 2032 with wings or rig up your own cr 2032 with wires.
You'll need a security bit to open the cart up. They're on eBay.
I'd be really surprised if a Phantasy Star IV battery was dead. Even my PS1 cart hasn't needed a replacement yet. The only games I've seen go bad this quickly are Pokemon Gameboy games.
I need to replace mine actually. I hadn't played it in close to five years and the battery is dead.
I wonder if there is just variable battery life? I have tons of games with saves and have yet to have to replace a battery. Just a few months ago I ended up playing Phantasy Star III and wondering where the hell I was in my save game from ten years ago or so. I know it happens, I just wonder why.
You have done a wonderful thing, buying Phantasy Star IV. It is in my opinion (and several others) THE best Genesis RPG. Hell, it's one of the best 16-bit RPGs PERIOD.
The way you guys talk about it... sounds like fun. Is the action Turn Based or Real Time?
It's not going bad quickly though. Phantasy Star IV was released in 1995. That's 15 years ago - well beyond what the battery should be able for. All 16 bit games with battery saves will be approaching the end of their life cycle.
I've found Snes ones I've gotten over the years seem to be gone a lot more then the Megadrive ones. Then again, a lot more Snes games use batteries.
Snes battery changes are really easy. You don't even need to desolder. You can just prise the old battery off the connector. Just make sure you do it slowly. It'll come off eventually.
Then tape a new battery back in and you're good to go. I've been using this method for years and all my saves still work perfectly.
Megadrive ones are a little trickier as you need to desolder the battery legs from the PCB. I've yet to try this too as Megadrive games with batteries tend to be more expensive!
Do the batteries get more or less drain based on usage? Does anybody know?
I considered that before but then thought that the games people would be interested in having fixed would more than likely be expensive RPGs. The risk to me wouldn't be worth the amount I'd be paid.
$10 a game does sound like a reasonable price for changing Snes carts. But as I was saying, it's really easy to do. Pick up a cheap snes game with a battery, a CR203 battery and give it a go yourself. :)
Now that I'm not sure of. Do the batteries only drain as long as there's a save there? if you erase saves, does it no longer drain? Would be nice to know for long term storage of games.
Or do they drain significantly more based on how many loads are done. Most of my games I've played through in a week and put down for a decade. I'd have to check them all, but I'd bet none have dead batteries yet.
PSIV is worth every penny. I don't think you'll regret the purchase, no sir.
I seriously doubt it. The battery is in use because there's a save file being 'remembered'. It's constantly in use when there's a save on there. Loading a game is hardly going to effect the drain. Why would it? When the load is being done the console is plugged into power.
If anything, I would say it's the opposte effect. The less it's used (with a save file on the cart) the more drain as the battery is keeping the save file going while the console is off.
You get something similar happening with CPS2 boards and the whole encryption suicide battery. There's a constant drain and when it goes below a certain level that's it, encryption files are lost.
Saying that, you do come across some freak incidents of battery longevity. My original Zelda cart's save feature still works and it's the original battery :)
Anyway, I'm getting totally off topic! Sorry! Phantasy Star IV - Yes, totally worth it!
It's one of the best games ever. EVER! Of all time!!!
Yup mine too. :) Zelda 1 batteries never die, I guess because of the power of the Triforce inside. :)Quote:

IDK if it's true, but someone explained to me once that the battery save of Zelda 1 does NOT work the same as in PSIV or similar games. He said that in Zelda 1, the battery is not drained constantly, like PSIV etc. Instead the battery is only used when the player directly saves the game. He said Zelda 1 doesn't really save your personal game. Instead, the game matches your personal game to its own data, as the game already contains all possible combinations of items, level progress, etc. as "files" built into the cartridge. So when u save, ur only matching ur game to one of the "files" of item collection, levels beaten, etc. that matches ur personal game exactly.
Actually I really don't think that could be true though. lol I bet it's just someone's pipedream theory to explain why Zelda carts never die! Obviously it's because of the power of the Triforce.
FUCK YES!!
The game is usually sold around the 70 mark; 40 is a fantastic price!
As for the game; hands down one of the best games ever made. I'm not even that much a RPG "lover" but I fucking love this game! BUY IT NOW!!
Bother with Assassin's Creed another time, that will go down in price, this will go up!
Those are GBP right?
Just checked Ebay and the PAL version of Phantasy Star IV seems to go for around that much. That's definitely steep in comparison to the Genesis Phantasy Star IV, which is 10-15 GBP for a complete one.
PSIV my favorite RPG.
Yeah, GBP. The game's not rare, it's arsehole sellers who are cashing in on the legacy of the game. I'm surprised about the US version though - I'm definatly gonna be getting that soon.
@Jaxmazon: Glad you ordered it. The UK boxart is superior in my opinion merely because they mirrored the cover art, making it more appealable. The US's just doesn't look right...
