i was just wondering how many of you have one of these? i always considered myself up on my megadrive hardware. only found out this existed a few min ago when i happened to see one listed on ebay! as you can imagine, i bought it straight away :)

Really nice find! I wish they released in North America so that I could use one of those things on my un-moded Genesis.

I got a Power Base Converter which does the same thing, I got it for £2 but the postage costed £15. :S
Watch out. My converter (Datel - almost identical) is terrible with compatibility - sometimes it'll run, sometimes it won't. They're terrible for requiring you place the cart at exactly the right angle, worse than the N64 can be. One slight gust of wind = crashed game.
Although playing OutRun on a modded Mega Drive brings up the Mark3 logo. Cool, if useless - setting your machine to Japanese (60Hz Domestic) allows you to run games as they'd appear on a Japanese Mark 3/Master System.
i bought this item more for the collector side of me rather then actually using it. its not every day i see a piece of megadrive hardware i dont have, let alone never heard of. must have had my head buried in a bucket of sand for that one :daze:

Yup. A select few Master System games have region detection code: if they detect a Japanese Master System or Mark III system - most likely by detecting the extra FM chip - they display the flashing 'MARK III' logo and run as usual. If no extra FM chip is present - i.e. in a European or American Master System or all Mega Drives - they just assume the Master System BIOS has already run and skips the 'MARK III' logo.Quote:

Some SMS games NOT released in Japan with show a Mark 3 screen, or a screen with a Sega logo, and/or not support FM. Slap Shot has a Sega logo, a flashing one, Rambo 3 displays a Mark 3 screen, and Ultima 4 has FM music, but was not released in japan.
What I don't understand is why there isn't an option to play SMS games with FM music on the Genesis. I mean the Genesis does have a bunch o' FM sound channels sitting there doing nothing, and the SMS FM sound channels sounds FAAAAAAAR less than your average Genesis game in quality, so I think it could be done. Maybe the Genesis is way too awesome for the SMS FM chip?
