So far, I've been "lucky" when it comes to expensive games, in that I've either purchased them when they first came out at fair market value (Snatcher) have gotten them ridiculously cheap when ebay was coming into it's own (Blackthorne 32x CIB for 3.50!), or gotten some great steals at local shops (usually 4-5 bucks for loose games). The most I would have paid was 200.00 for a copy of Rondo of Blood for the PC-Engine CD system, but it came with a hand made and full sized vampire killer. If I remember right the morning star was pure steel with silver plating and the handle was solid oak with leather grips - real quality piece of work. Unfortunately, it was an eBay auction that got cancelled at the last minute due to their prohibiting of selling weapons at the time (dunno what the policy is now).
$80 for a copy of Guardian Heroes. I then played it, didn't like it, and sold it to someone else for $80 about a week or two later.
Think my second-higest was $60 for a complete copy of Burning Rangers. I definitely don't regret that decision one bit!
I remember a few years ago the Konami store was selling "official" vampire killer whips for $25. I regret buy one now since I have become a huge Castlevania fan in recent years. I always wondered how the quality and detail was like. From the picture it seemed like just a regular leather bull whip with the Castlevania logo on it. It didn't have any oak or silver plated steel.
The one you were bidding on sounds like a real show piece. Do you remember if that whip was originally sold by Konami/Japan or a officially licensed product?
And not to get off topic....The most I've spent on a Genesis game is $50 for Yu Yu Hakusho Makyoutohissen a few years back. Seems that prices have really decreased for this game.
I like Burning Rangers more than Guardian Heroes too! GH is no slouch, though, and I intend to get a copy of my own some day.
As for the topic at hand, I don't think I've ever payed more that $49.99 + tax for a video game. I did purchase a sealed copy of Sonic Jam back in high school to the tune of 50 bucks plus shipping, so that might be it. Don't know why I got it sealed really, except I must have really wanted a new copy. Either that or it was the only complete listing, I was just as much a stickler about that then as I am now.
Most "expensive" game I own though is a sealed (still haven't gotten around to opening/playing it yet, due to a lack of a RAM Cart on my part) copy of Shining Force CD. That was gifted to me by a friend, but he spent around 200 bucks on it. Far more than I would dream of spending on most games that aren't Panzer Dragoon Saga, but hey! As long as it's not my money. :)
I think Musha, for 70 dollars, cart only. Would have payed a lot more for a box and instructions if I really cared about CIB. Best shooter I have ever played.
I was buying them when they came out so I guess $49.99 give or take $10.
In the last 10 years, the most I paid was $14.99 for Mutant League Hockey at a second hand store.
It was something the guy had made, IIRC. I know it wasn't anything "official" because he had shown pictures of it being launched at planks of wood to demonstrate it's durability, and I highly doubt Konami would release something that could potentially be lethal. It's a shame, really - I mean, who wouldn't want something like that? To fight vampires and such, I mean. The thing would go through Robert Pattinson's head like a hot knife through butter. By taking him down, I'd know what it was like to be a Belmont! :)
I only ever bought Megadrive games for retail price, back in the day.
As for recent games: E179.- for a GT5 signature edition is the most I've spent on a game, I think.
For Genesis titles I've spent:
- $500+ Swamp Thing (prototype)
- $750 Dragon's Lair (prototype)
- $500 Prince of Persia 2 (prototype + Dev unit and blank carts)
- $$$$$ For a CIB Outback Joey (with numerous peripherals).
I also spent $750 on another Genesis prototype, but that's on the DL for now.
I know it seems like a lot of money, but I've spent over $1K on a number of occasions for NES prototypes. *Chick magnet.
