Yeah...I think I remember that thing.

On black friday I was in best buy digging through the 360 discount bin. 2 women who were shopping for their kids were in the same area. One of them saw sonic unleashed and picked it up and said "Oh, I didn't know Sonic was on xbox." They were trying to choose between it and a wii game, I think it was black knight.

One of them said "I thought Sonic was only on Nintendo." The other than argued that all game companies make games for all systems now...yeah okay. Well then the first woman said "Yeah but Sonic is nintendo and nintendo doesn't do that."

Now I try to avoid contact with strangers most any given time, but I just couldn't keep my mouth shut any longer. I looked up and said "Sonic isn't nintendo, it's Sega." They just looked at me puzzled. I then told them that he's been on most every console since sega's dreamcast when they bowed out of console making. Again, blank stares. So then I said "Remember Sega Genesis? He started on Sega Genesis." Finally the first woman said "Oh yeah, I think I remember that thing."

It was sad that people (even the general public) think Sonic is a nintedo creation, but at least random middle aged mothers still remember Sega Genesis. Just goes to show that genesis still has more brand recognition than sega in general with most consumers I suppose.

Wow, that's pretty bad, haha! Goes to show how much SEGA fucked up their IPs.

They probably got their kids all the GBA and DS Sonic games... that's my shot in the dark anyway.

I could see why they'd think Nintendo makes Sonic. It's not like every Sonic game ever made has fucking "SEGA" on it in bold letter and yells "SEGA" at you when you start it up or anything.

Sonic Advance for the GBA was the first Sonic game on a Nintendo System. It came out in Japan in 2001 and in the US/EU in 2002.
So Sonic has been on Nintendo systems for 8 years already.
No wonder todays kids (and ignorant parents) might think he's a Nintendo character.
Man, I can remember the time that a Sonic game on a Nintendo console was something that nobody thought would ever happen. :)

I guess that appearance in Smash Bros. Brawl doesn't help either.

I think you guys might be taking this a little too seriously. They were shopping for their kids. My mom doesn't know shit about video games either. I mean, she knows Sonic is Sega, but that's just because I've had a Genesis since I was six.

SEGA is the only one at fault for Sonic and SEGA not getting the proper recognition.

The market is teeming with Nintendo related paraphernalia, while Sega/Sonic stuff is maybe 1/10th that.

I have been there out and about and finding it impossible to bite my tongue. In a way it could be taken as compliment if people think Sonic stands in the same light as Mario on his own system.

I was in GameStop once and this grandma comes in with her 5-year-old looking for games. The kid spots Sega Bass Fishing on Wii and wants that one, but the grandma says "That's for Sega, we don't have a Sega". The kid is like "Sega?" She didn't know what the heck that even meant, but the grandma was sure it was for Sega only.

That's a pretty hip grandma. Mine still uses a tv antenna and a vcr.

We watched Rumble in the Bronx last night, and I cringed every time I saw that kid playing a Game Gear without a game in it. I kept telling myself maybe it was a Hong Kong pirate Game Gear with Roms on it, but I doubt they had something that actually had a cart port and pirate ROMs installed.

On topic though, people have no idea about what they buy across the board and they don't want to know. It's what makes the economy go round.

Yeah I guess most people are like that. I research just about everything I buy on the internet first, but most people I know just buy something blindly, or worse, ask for the opinion/help of the salesman.

I remember the times that my mom bought games for me when I was young. I bet she always picked them on the box art alone as she had little knowledge on videogames.
These games I got from her:

Strider
World of Illusion (Mickey & Donald)
Gauntlet 4
Castlevania: The New Generation(Bloodlines)
Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade

She had a good taste in games :), except for Indiana Jones but everyone makes mistakes.
These days I always research my games before I buy them. In all those years I have only returned one game to the store. Sonic Riders.....

My mom always had good taste in games too. One christmas was mario 2, mario 3 and castlevania 2 (I really like that one, despite popular opinion)

Another time was Mario Kart 64 and starfox 64.

Come to think of it, they never supported my sega habit. Dad did, he got me a 32X. Although I actually asked for that one, so I suppose it doesn't count.

You mean some women who haven't played videogames for the last 10-30 years like us don't know much about Sega or Sonic?

If I was mistaken about something I have no interest in and some stranger tried to tell me the 'facts', I would not have reacted so kindly as these milfs did. I hear things like this all the time. People are wrong about games and cars (my two hobbies), but I do what most people would...mind my own business.

I agree with the satirical comments of the spinning frog puppet. These ladies just aren't interested that much in games, and they don't have to know everything. Although, the story is slightly humorous.

Why are you all just lollygagging about? This is evidence that we need to educate the masses! I'll get my clearly-propaganda pamphlets, let's hit the streets and spread the good word about SEGA!

Seriously though, while it would be nice for people to still remember the days of SEGA in its prime, I don't blame mothers of all people for not. Still a funny story, nevertheless.

I realized the other day just how much the Nintendo brand is worth.
Mario Kart Wii is still selling for about $55 and Sonic & Sega All Stars Racing is now down to $19.


I bought Sonic Mega Collection for my cousins to play on their Wii and a few times when I was over there I heard them say "lets play Sega" which I thought was kind of cool, so the Sega name has not been completely forgotten.

While it is a shame that most people recognize gaming with Nintendo you can't really blame them because Nintendo has had almost complete dominance over the game industry since 1985 with the exception of a few bumps in the road.
