I did that as well, thanks for verifying my "discovery".

I just bought a copy on ebay. I look forward to playing it.
The menu being in another language makes it hard to navigate in the beginning but once you start the game it's amazing to play and one of the most enjoyable beat'em ups on the Genesis.
Some of the way they adapted the ripped graphics in this is pretty well done. I'm pretty sure I'm seeing stuff from King of Dragons and one of the later Samurai Spirits in there. Pity about the sound levels on stage 2 being off (the music is way louder than the FX), and the animation is kind of lacking on the player characters, but overall this game is quite OK.
a manageable 1CC on normal or hard, not a difficult game at all.
I'd live a copy of this. Any one know where to get a copy?
evilevoix Ebay is probably your best bet for now though I'm sure you could find a copy on some message board at some point. Be warned that most copies are bootlegs as I found out when I got mine but nonetheless it's still just fun to have and play.
I want to translate this game into english one day.
AlecRob I would love to see that day and wholeheartedly support your idea if you undertake it.
Is the boss theme in this game an original composition or is it ripped out of some FF title? Is there any original assets used or is everything stolen? I figure the intermission screens are Never Ending Softs, since they appear to be much lower quality than the graphics in the actual game.
They give you two turkeys at the boss even in 1p mode which has to be some sort of first:p
Just got this game today and I spent some quality time with it. For an unofficial low budget release it certianly is very polished. The sound effects are clearly stolen from other Sega games, but what the hell! This game kicks ass!
What people probably don't know is that if you boost the difficulty in this game, it doesn't wrap up where it usually would on normal, but instead goes on for another hour or so, if memory serves me correctly, making this the most long-winded belt-scroller I've ever played.
What I'm saying is that there are assets used in the game you wouldn't usually see just playing on normal, enemies as well I think. I was wondering where the 32 MEG went :)
Too bad clearing the higher difficulties will be next to impossible thanks to the ridiculous run time, and the game is a bit too easy to clear on the one credit just set to Normal, so for me the situation with this one is a bit broken at the moment.
Ahh well, it was fun while it lasted; playing it on real hardware and so on.
Kamahl correctly asserted that GA III has some seriously whack magic effects - the graphical FX on the magic in this, ripped assets or not, look absolutely fantastic in comparison.
Oh and it's not just this game, all of the chinese RPGs have INSANE magic effects. Absolutely crazy looking over the top effects. Heck, one of the strategy RPGs shows nothing but magic effects during the intro. Stuff like Chrono Trigger and FF VI have absolutely crap effects in comparison.
I always found it interesting to pick out all the stolen or retraced elements on this game, especially with the magic effects. If I remember correctly one looks like the dragon from Forgotten Worlds.
By Normal, I think you mean the game's equivalent of Practice difficulty, right?
Strange, I had no problem at all clearing it with my fiancée on the upper two difficulties (Brave Man and Hero), but that's 2P, admittedly, and not trying for a 1CC. It's repetitive, sure, but we had fun and got through it with relatively little trouble, albeit with the maximum number of extra lives.
:| So the default is practice mode? Bah.
And yeah I was trying for the 1CC on this 'Brave' difficulty, I'd already beat this practice mode on 1 cred, that's what I was referring to. Since most decent arcade-style brawlers are perfectly fine to 1CC, I assumed this was too. It appears that I could be wrong there.
Huh, the more you know.
The hard mode is where this game shines but it needs a second player to make it doable, once you learn to work together it really becomes manageable. My friend and I played it a lot but never were able to finish the last boss on the hardest difficulty.
Has anyone ever figured out how to consistently do that heavy attack that sends enemies flying off the screen? The best I could come up with was something like "up, down+B", but the timing would be so ridiculously strict as to make it nearly impossible to pull off that way purposely.
I'm just wondering if the input window is a deliberate asshole like that or there's actually an easier way to do it.
Down Then Up + B at the same time. I usually can pull it off on the drop of a hat but once in a while it gets tricky in a busy situation.
That prompted me to do some more testing. The input that I got working best initially was something closer to "up+B, down" in a swift, continuous motion; however, the opposite combination of yours also works. What else works is a motherfucking fireball motion. I shit you not. "Down+B" followed by a very quick and continuous motion to "forward" works like a charm. Similarly, "up+B, up/forward, forward" also works. My mind is blown.
No wonder the move seems to come out in completely arbitrary instances with no discernible pattern-- there's no single "right" input. I think the common denominator here is that there must be a very swift and continuous motion between the two directions (i.e. never take your thumb off the D-pad) and that you must start with either "up" or "down". Weird.
I was wondering how that move came out, thought it might be situational or something. I'll check it out later to see if I can add anything.
After reading some of the comments on social media and here, I decided to finally purchase this game! I was expecting that the game would have hit detection issues or glitches during gameplay but I found none whatsoever! "Shui Hu: Feng Yun Zhuan" is solid beat'em up!
I am not certain whether the graphical elements have been ripped from other games but even if that was the case, Never Ending Soft did an amazing job! This game puts alot of licenced games to shame! The visual aesthetics are top notch! The backdrops are beautiful, the character sprites have a high level of detail, the magic effects are jaw dropping, and the game possesses a nice level of difficulty. Did i mention that the music is quite good? It fits the setting perfectly!
If there is one thing that this game proves, in the right hands the SEGA Genesis/Mega Drive can display a very beautiful game on screen!
I'm pretty sure I see Knights of the Round or King of Dragons in there, as well as backgrounds from one of the later Samurai Shodowns. The ice spells use sprites from Darkstalkers. Not sure where the soundtrack compositions are from, maybe some RPGs, dunno. The boss music is pretty good, as are one or two of the stage tracks.
The magic FX are indeed great, especially the more powerful spells you get later, really shaming GAIII in this regard. As a whole, the game generally makes excellent use of colour particularly on the sprites.
As an actual game, it's not bad, but IMO at the end of the day doesn't match most of the official brawlers released for the console.
It "borrows" a lot of elements form Knights of the Round. The player characters are redraws of the player sprites from KOF. Also some of the backgrounds are from that game as well. One of the bosses is a redraw of Zangieff, even has his signature moves. The intro song is Tera's theme from Final Fantasy VI, ported over to the Genesis, which sounds kinda cool. There's other borrowed stuff too, but I don't have it all documented. These are just the main things off the top of my head. Game plays great though, I'd say it's better than a lot of the officially licensed brawlers, ie: all the Golden Axes.
Even with the lack of moves, it is still very playable.
As I played the game, it did occur to me that the move sets were few and far between compared to the Streets of Rage or Golden Axe series. But it honestly did not affect my enjoyment of the game. Today I decided to look up information about Shui Hu Feng Yun Zhuan and I was quite amazed to find out that, similar to the arcade game "Knights of the Round", once you discover treasure and health power-ups, you can divide them into smaller portions. What?!?!! I need to try that! This game is getting better by the minute! :p
In this interview, Brandon Cobb says he sold the rights to this game to another team. I wonder what team. I hope it's a team who wants to re-release it with cart, box and manual. That would be neat.
Given that Piko Interactive recently asked for the Brave/Barver Battle Saga IPS patch to be removed from ROMHacking.net because they bought the rights, maybe they bought SHFYZ as well?
BTW the Piko site also has an article with partial source code for the (very) unfinished Genesis game The Head, which I don't think anyone's mentioned on here.
EDIT: Ha, I just caught this in the interview:
"SegaDude Q14: Are you able to give up any hints as to what game might be coming next from Super Fighter Team for a retro game console?
Brandon A14: Nope! You’ll just have to wait and see! (Ну, погоди!)"
Not sure whether he's dropping a big hint here or just making a joke that reflects his interest in unlicensed/pirate games. Either way "Wait and See/Ну, погоди!" is the name of a famous Russian cartoon, and there's a well-known pirate NES game vaguely based on it (or at least with the same name) that uses a Bugs Bunny sprite for its main character.
Damn, I hope they do a Game Gear game. That would rock.
