I got my Genesis Christmas 1991 bundled with sonic the Hedgehog. I still have it and it's the only Genesis I've ever owned. Unfortunately, I traded away most of the games at a local video game store to buy Saturn games in the mid 90's. I've spent the last few years trying to reassemble my game collection, while also picking up classics I never had the pleasure of playing.
2006, at a used game store. Model 2, but I have since added model 1's with and without HDG. Also, now own a model 3.
About 3 days after it came out in america.
My first Genesis related system I got in Sept of '08 off of evil bay.
That was the CDX system.
If were talking strictly of the standalone Genesis consoles, then that was the HDG Model 1 purchased at around Christmas of that same year.
I only got mine in the summer of 2009. Pretty late I know. I had played Genesis a few times in 2000 though. My friend had Streets of Rage.
I got my sega genesis brand new in 1991 for christmas, the sonic the hedgehog pack. I still have it with the original box and it still works great. I wouldn't sell it for any amount of money.
For my birthday in 1992 with the Sonic 1 pack-in. That Christmas I got Sonic 2.
I also still have it and would never sell it, but it's now packed away in it's box. I finally replaced my Model 1 Genesis and Model 2 Sega CD with a CDX about a year ago.
Spring 2008 for $35 dollars at a used games store. It's a model one, but it's the only one that I've ever seen without the "High definition graphics" written around the top rim of the console.
Also, my grandfather bought one for me to play back in 1998, (I was 3 years old, by the way) if that counts.
First week of US release!
Couldn't get one in Canada so my parents drove to Spokane. Bastards made me use my own money to buy it!
Having grown up with an Atari 2600 and my Atari XEGS (which I still have), I can remember seeing all the pictures of the Master System and NES games in magazines. All the arcade ports like After Burner, Shinobi and Thunder Blade were things I really wanted to play. Around late Summer of '89, the Genesis and the Power Base Converter that would allow you to play Master System games on the Genesis started showing up in stores. To me, that was just a miracle.
As Christmas neared, I did what all kids do... I dropped hints. Lots of hints. Genesis this, Genesis that, Genesis Genesis Genesis. When Christmas came near, I remember thinking that I'd probably end up with a different system. See, a few years before I really wanted an Atari 7800 so I could play Xevious. That Christmas, I got my Atari XEGS with a copy of the 7800's Xevious because the moron behind the counter said the XE could play 7800 games. Needless to say, it can't and Xevious was returned. Still, my Atari XEGS is a treasured little system now and I own Xevious 3D/G+ for the PS1, so it all worked out.
Anyway, I waited. Hoping to get a Genesis, but in the back of my mind, expecting something else. The NES, a collection of Genesis (the band) music cassettes... who knew really. But the big day came, I opened the big box, and there was my Genesis. I'd been given a copy of Thunder Force II and Revenge of Shinobi as well, so I was all set. A few days went by and I got to go to Target. There, with Christmas money in hand, I got the last Power Base Converter on their store shelves and a new copy of Shinobi.
After that, bit by bit, I built up my library for both with the likes of Ghouls 'N' Ghosts and Spellcaster. A few years later, I bought a Master System with the 3-D glasses from a pawn shop. That Master System went POOF! when I accidentally plugged an NES power adapter into it, but I got another one some time later. Now, 21 years later and counting, I still have my original Genesis and PBC, and both continued to be used regularly.
My rich friend got a Genesis when Sonic came out, and I played the hell out of it but could not afford one of my own. I could pick one console at Christmas...and I picked the SNES. The SNES was stolen, so the next year I got another one. Finally, in the Christmas of 93 I think, I unwrap a large box, and...
A Sega Genesis model 2, with Sonic 2! And a 6 button pad! OMG! I didn't even get any games for a long time, I just played sonic 2 over and over.
1995. It was my first console, and I bought it myself from my own money. I got the Mega Drive II bundle with Sonic 2, for something like 180 guilders (around 80 euro).
I'm pretty sure that I got mine for my birthday in 1992. Model 1 with the Sonic pack-in.

February 1991 packed with Sonic. My parents got me Ecco the Dolphin with it as well, and there was some sort of deal where we got a discount on Sonic 2 (upon release) by buying the Genesis at Babbage's.
I was so excited, and then we hooked it up to our game room TV and discovered that the thing didn't work properly with Zenith TVs. We hooked it up in another room for the time being, but had to send it back to Sega to get that adjustment done... longest couple months of my young life to that point waiting for my system to come back!
Of course, now I have a model II (8 bucks at a flea market) that I use primarily... the model I still works, and my fiancée has a model II of her own. We won't be getting rid of any of those.
FWIW, I picked up a 32x after it had been price slashed to nothing... grabbed it for $19.99. Or, rather, my parents did. Don't remember when that was, probably '96 at a Service Merchandise... remember that store?
I was given mine (VA3 Model 2) in April of 2008. A friend of mine gave it to me for free with Sonic 2 and Aladdin. And thus I became a game collector...

1990, Altered Beast bundle. Still have it, as well as all games.
My parents brought the Mega Drive around 1993-1994, when I was just a young baby.
It turns out they really wanted a Sega 32x.
1994 or 1995, basically close to the end of the console's life span.... I missed out on a lot of games that had been released though, over the years I have collected many of the ones I missed back in the day.
17 years ago today, model 2 sonic 2 bundle.
The one I play these days I got on this day 5 years ago.

I got mine in 1993 - model 2 with Sonic 2 packed in. It was the best thing in my life at the time. My mom said that sometimes I'd sleep walk and go downstairs to try and play the thing in my sleep, lol.
Summer 1992-3, model 1 that was bundled with Sonic 2. Se-gaaaaaaa.
July of 1991 is when I got my first Genesis (packed with Altered Beast). Earned the money working for a relative that summer. Also bought Batman The Video Game and a pair of headphones to use with it because that was just the coolest shit ever lol. I sent off the proofs of purchase to get the free Sonic cartridge that took FOREVER to arrive.
I got my first Genesis sort of late.
Christmas 1993, Model I. I think Sonic 2 Came with it.
My first game (other than sonic 2) was Street Fighter II Special Championship Edition.
By this time the Model II had just came out.
Sometime in 1993 I got my first Genesis and which I eventually fried a couple of more. Then I got one that still works to this day in Christmas 1995 (but it's been through alot like my parents throwing it around for example). As a 6 year old I lick the cartridge connectors and stick them in the Genesis (that fried a couple). Then I learned better. I also have some developmental life-long disorder called Autism that result in number of odd things I did to those poor Genesis' and boom they would die.
Now a days I have a couple of working Genesis' that I got over the last few years and take really good care of them. This is when I discovered that Genesis' do sound different depending on the board revision and wasn't a broken PSG chip in my MD2 VA2.3 after all. I take 'em apart and notice different motherboard layouts.

I was a Nintendo fanboy growing up so only had Nintenedo stuff. I am making up for lost time. I bought a 32x about 2 weeks ago and of course you need a Genesis for that so I bought one. I only have two games for it (Sonic + Sonic 2) but I have a large want list. Altered Beast is in the mail though. I've mostly been playing 32x games.
Exact same thing here. I was a Nintendo fanboy growing up in the late 80's to mid 90's and so was everyone I knew. I mean all my Friends in Grade School had NES and then SNES and so did I. We all hated on the Genesis back then.Quote:

Christmas of '91 or '92 with the Sonic bundle. The timeline is a little hazy. I do remember getting Sonic 2 the following Christmas, though. Then the Sega CD (model 2) the Christmas after that. So it was probably '91, that sounds right.

Interesting fact, NES, SMS and Mega Drive clone systems are still freely available over here. They get marketed under the 'Gamestation' or 'TeleGamestation' label, and shape-wise they mostly take the form of a PS1, PS2 or Xbox.
Got my Model 1 (VA7 unfortunately) in either '94 or '95 as I was in 5th grade when I got it. It came w/ Sonic 1 plus a free copy of Sonic 2 in the mail. :cool: Must have been the best Genesis package ever sold!
I was a Nintendo fan for a long time but then one boring and rainy day I was going through my fathers stuff and I found a model 2 Sega Genesis stacked at the very top shelf, box and all, so I went to the store and bought some Sega Genesis games, Arrow Flash and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and I have been attached to Sega ever since, well at least until 2005. My father was always saying that since they canceled the Sega Channel he had no reason for it , he only bought it for the Sega Channel for which I can not blame him for 30 games a month for only 15$, I think. That was a good deal. He was always saying how he meant to give it away, or sell it, but he never did and I guess now I know why. It was destined for me to have it, and without it I would probably not even be a Sega fan to this day.
Got mine bout 5 years ago. Landed a Model 2 genesis (a model with good sound--tho I wasn't aware of any of the sound stuff then) along with the model 2 CD add-on, and a small stack of games (3 cart and 7 CD) for a whopping 10 bucks. Even tho I had never seen a genesis before, I just couldn't pass it up.
Didn't do much with it at first..but after getting a nice stack of games from a friend a little while later (who acquired a free stack of genny titles at another yard sale elsewhere for me) that featured such awesome games like Street Fighter IICE and Rocket Knight Adventures, I was hooked.
I got it for Christmas 1991 with Zoom! and Altered Beast. Best console ever. the Arcades at home!
7th birthday, 1994. Fun fact: I was the only kid in school with a Genesis instead of a Super Nintendo, and that made me the coolest kid around.
I got mine December 27, 1989 along with Altered Beast, Super Thunder Blade and Thunder Force II.
I found the receipt earlier this year, I think everything was nearly $500.
