The best fighting game on Genesis, and general genny figting games discussion.

So, which Genesis fighting game is the best in your opinion? I used to think SFII Special Champion Edition is the best one, but recently I started to appreciate Samurai Shodown more, and it almost took SFII's place in my heart :p

Also, as far as gameplay and figting systems go, WWF Wrectlemania Arcade Game has a nice one (it's a fighting game really, not a wrestling one).

On the other hand I just can't lay my finger on Eternal Champions. I've seen many good reviews but when I try to play it myself, I just can't stand it's ugly look.

UMK3 for me, no contest about it. Everything works well for me, and I like the characters a lot too.

:confused: Why SFII: SCE and not SSFII? It has everything + more.

My vote goes to Yuu Yuu Hakusho, with Eternal Champions as a runner up.
Why? Because YYH and EC haven't been ported a million times, as is the case with pretty much every other genesis fighting game.
Oh, and YYH just plain owns. 4 player combat? Yes sir.
I'll take that over some crappy SF, MK or Neo Geo port any day of the week.

I like Power Instinct as well, but I know it's not as good as these two.

and Mortal Kombat.
Nothing beats these Genesis titles IMO especially Primal Rage because I kick ass at it on hardest.

Also, makes me sad when people attack Eternal Champions because it "looks ugly". Especially since I happen to like EC pretty well. (though I prefer the Sega CD sequel better.)

I also enjoyed Mortal Kombat II back when I was 15. I still think it's MUCH better than MK1 or MK3.

This. UMK3 is the best fighting game on Mega Drive and one of the top 2D fighting
games of all time (second maybe only to MK Trilogy).

How can such a poorly executed port be considered the best fighting game on the Mega Drive?
Sure, UMK3 is a good game, and lots of people still play it on XBL etc. even in favour of MKT due to balance issues.
But on the MD? No way.
When it comes to port quality the MK series are somewhere at the bottom. Sure, the Street Fighter games have crappy sound and washed up colours, but the MK games are incomplete.

On a sidenote: Samurai Shodown is the best fighting game port on the MD.

How is the port of UMK3 on the Mega Drive bad? It's better than the SNES port,
what else is there to compete? Please don't bring in the MS-DOS port which is
probably arcade perfect or the ports on 32-bit systems.

The SNES port was actually slower than the Genesis port, but I agree, they could have done a better job porting the game to the Genesis. Unfortunately, Probe has a history of being cheap on the Genesis.

Btw, graphics don't make the game. ;) For the hardware limitations, the game's alright.

I love MK1. Simple gameplay, no those stupid combos, cool style. Though, Sega Genesis version wasn't the best one, just look at Kano's sprites. They are full of pointless red pixels, like Probe just ran them through some convector without any editing. PC MS-DOS version outstanded them all (With the help of awesome music).
I also prefer Sega Genesis MK2 over other version. Loved dark colors of this version, sloppy animation (yep, I like sloppy animation sometimes) and music is catchier.

I am afraid not, but I cannot see what makes people prefer SCE over SSF2. The color choices are awful, the voices as scratchy - only the music is so completely different that I could see people preferring that over the (excellent) material featured in SSF2.

SFII: SCE has faster gameplay options (10 stars turbo), which makes it the Genesis SF KING for me. Love those lighting-fast rounds! If SSFII had that, then it would probably be the clear winner but it doesn't, so... SCE all the way!

i too prefer SFCE (well, turbo at least) to SSF2.

I disagree. It may not be perfect, but it's not "horrible". It's the same comment that I get from people hating on Space Harrier II. Those games are fun as hell. In my house, it's all about gameplay baby;).

Even as a die-hard MK fanboi, I have to agree with you 100% here. UMK3 on both the Genesis and SNES is complete crap; washed out sound, small sprites, lousy animation; it just doesn't translate well at all. I grew up playing the Saturn version (which is vastly superior to both), but the load times kill it. Arcade all the way.

Also, MKT is a joke; even more broken than UMK3 on any console.

UMK3 doesn't translate that well to the Mega Drive graphically, but I prefer the selection of fighters to the arcade version and the gameplay is very smooth and responsive, practially perfect. Also it has more gore than the SNES version, so for 16-bit consoles I'd say UMK3 is pretty much as good as it gets.

No doubt the Saturn version would blow the Mega Drive port out of the water graphically and gameplay-wise though. But I grew up playing UMK3 on my Mega Drive, Saturns were exactly a common thing where I came from.

Understandable. I was just never really impressed, personally, with UMK3 on the Genesis. Maybe I need to dig up a copy and give it another go; it's been quite a few years.

I actually prefer the Genesis version of UMK3 over the Saturn version. Yeah, the Saturn has way better graphics and sounds, but when you have to wait for finishing moves to load or even special moves (like shang sung's morph) to load as well as having to wait for the match itself to load in the first place...it's just a bit lame.

And also, why no love for Saturday Night Slam Masters? It's like Street Fighter, but with a silly Mexican wrestling element added to it :P

I wanna like SSF2 on Genesis more then SCE but the music is pretty bad for the most part. Also I think SCE looks a little better (SSF2 is really bright looking in a lot of stages to much contrast).

The additions are nice and it should have made SCE obsolete but it didn't because of the negatives I probably play them 50/50.

Looks like I have to track down UMK3 and take it for a spin.

In case you have a component setup for your Genesis, don't use that and connect via composit. The game was really made with the color blending in mind, similar to Eternal Champions, even if not to the same extent.

Also, I love Eternal Champions.

WeaponLord is probably the most technically impressive from a graphics and gameplay point. I love the parry and counter system in particular, fricking awesome game.

I tried it, but can only say that I love the soundtrack. I'm not a big fan of games where you have three punches and three kicks and no block button. Also the learning curve seemed steeper than usual with that game. I'd definitely want to enjoy it, because the characters are nicely drawn and the music is good, but have no time to go through the learning process properly. Maybe someday, after retirement, when I've got all the time in the world :D

Pick Kor and use the strat guide I have in the link above. You'll be slaughtering like Conan in no time. The parry and counter system is the trick, and a good combo or two. This game is simply too awesome to wait for retirement. Think if Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat were actually optimized for the Genesis and enhanced with better fighting mechanics than just a few combos and a block. WeaponLord is awesome.

I should say though that I found the game impossible to play over emulation even with a Saturn controller.

Ah, yeah, Eternal Champions is a chore to get into. You would have to learn a character's main moves and get good with at least one combo in that game to have any hope.
