Hi all,
I was thinking about picking up "Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure" but I'm not sure which one I should pick up. The choice is either the version for the Sega CD or the 32X
The added colors look great on the 32X but the sound is just amazing on the Sega CD. I also believe the Sega CD has more levels and it has a killer intro.
Which version do you think is the best?
It would have been better if they made a Sega CD 32X version ;)
Get both. They each have their good points, so if you can afford both, why bother choosing? :)
It is up to you whether to get one, the other, both or every version of this game depending on whether you can afford it. I only played the Genesis version so I can't really comment on this but both the Sega CD and the 32x have extra stages.
Just be careful playing the 32x version though, it is apparently very buggy, has a bit of a dodgy frame rate and can even cause crashes in game.
Sega CD, 32x version is full of lovely extra glitches.
Because "just because" isn't a good justification for spending money? Haha. Unless he's like a big Pitfall fan, I couldn't see it being worth buying the same game twice. Maybe that's just me.Quote:

I had Pitfall 32X crash on me once... during the title sequence. It's never failed in the game. Not saying it won't, just that it hasn't for me. I've never had the SCD version fail at all.
32X version is buggy.
grab the SCD or GEN version.
can't go wrong with the smooth and colorfull SNES version ;)

It's always been a bit muffled to me, compared to the Genesis. I wouldn't say one is better than the other. They both have their strengths and their weaknesses.Quote:

Back in the day I did play the Genesis & SNES versions. Since I no longer have my SNES, that version is out of the question.
I didn't know about the glitches on the 32X version. Thanks for that info.
I'm leaning towards the Sega CD but I want to make sure I'm not missing out on some exclusive features found only on the 32X version.
We've seen feature charts on games on different consoles for things like Doom, but we need that for other games as well.

And finally, the 32X port is the worst of them all due to the shitty programming (while admirable that the foreground graphics were noticeably enhanced by the 32X hardware, the portions handled by the 32X run at a noticeably lower frame rate than the portions handled by the Genesis, making for a jittery experience. Plus, the sound is lifted from the Genesis version w/no enhancements.)

Never notice framerate issues either. Were you guys playing off an emulator or PAL copy?
Only gripe I have with 32X Pitfall is that it's ridiculously hard and unforgiving as a 2D platformer. EDIT: but not as hard as Eternal Champions Genesis, that game IMO is unplayable.
I played Pitfall 32X for a while last night and noticed exactly what Aarzak described -- the objects in the foreground moved in a noticeably more "jittery" way than the background. It's not Awesome Possum bad, but it's still disappointing in what ought to be a silky-smooth game. This is on real hardware BTW, via an EverDrive.
The Jaguar port is supposedly quite good.

Just to follow up on this old thread:
I just got Pitfall 32X CIB (for a great price!), and the real cart looks exactly the same as it did on my Everdrive (not that I had any doubt). The frame rate is clearly subnormal on all the foreground objects -- my girlfriend even commented on how jittery it looked. All other 32X games play perfectly on my setup (Model 2 + 32X).
Unless there's something really freaky going on, I can't see how anyone else would be getting different results, except maybe with a PAL version à la Double Dragon II.
I'm not sure the 32X can scroll backgrounds at 60FPS like the Genesis can, it has to do everything in software with dual 256KB frame buffers. There were advantages to the cell based approach of older consoles after all.
I prefer the Sega CD version of Pitfall, and not just for the music.
Interesting, that. Let me note though that it's the foreground layer of parallax that's jittery -- the distant background scrolls smoothly, albeit more slowly (since it's farther away and all). If I had to guess, I'd say the "foreground background" is under 30 FPS -- maybe even as low as 20 FPS? -- but others can peg those sorts of benchmarks better than I can.
I'll have to give the Sega CD version a spin, since I have a copy. Sometime next year I'll launch a campaign against this game, probably starting with the Genesis or SNES version.
The higher color foreground layer is run by the 32X. I haven't checked, but it wouldn't surprise me that the far background was run by the Genesis like many 32X games do. I think this is a fine solution for games, but many consider this a "cheap port" solution.
I am currently able to make a comparison video of the Genesis, SNES, Sega CD and 32X versions of Pitfall over Composite if anybody is interested. Video won't show anything above 30FPS so the differences might be a bit subdued.
Well, the 256 color mode of the 32X is probably what you want for scrolling playfields. It has more than twice the memory needed for a full screen. You can make each line of the display as long as you want (as long as they all fit) so that you have plenty of room for scrolling either direction. The ability to set the line start also allows for scrolling vertically as well. By scrolling the display, you minimize the amount of new data that needs to be redraw; for example, if you just scroll horizontally 16 pixels, you only need to redraw 16xHEIGHT pixels of data. Clearly, an animated background would require you to redraw the areas that changed as well as the areas scrolled into sight.Quote:

I've played both versions, and I prefer the Sega CD version. The 32X version looks nice with the extra color and all, but for some reason the hit detection isn't the same. For example, when you kill snakes with your whip, you have to be either a little closer, or a little farther away from the snake than in the Sega CD version.
I wasn't thinking that the 32X couldn't scroll at 30FPS by any means, I'm very confident it could handle high color 3D at that framerate plus animation. I'm just drawing a blank on the 32X doing 60FPS at all. It wasn't a big deal to me back in the day because I hadn't bothered to train my eyes to see the difference. Mortal Kombat II and Tempo looked great to me back then and still do. Knuckles Chaotix always looked like a Genesis 32X hybrid to me, which I didn't mind at all.
Cartridge = no load times.
How is the Jaguar version of the game? Are the 32X or SNES versions derived from it?
The Jaguar game is an improved version of the Megadrive / SNES ones with extra frames of animation, more colours and new music. The box also claims "enhanced gameplay" but I have no idea what that is, for me its easily the best version of the game.Quote:
