just got a 22" Widescreen at work (rant)

22" of wasted space and after only having my new machine/monitor combo on for less than 15 mins; my eyes are aching already.

What the fuck is wrong with people wanting to have to scan their eyes across this barrren landscape of monitor just to see the whole picture...


I hate widescreen and I hate everyone that loves widescreens. Screw all of y'all for the death of 4:3 aspect ratios.








I can't even imagine gaming on this piece of shit and straining my eyes to look left and right of my character in a FPShooter for instance.... this is so lame.
Might be cool for RTS but for every other genre of Gaming... feck that.

I have to agree, monitors like that are overkill for almost everything I do, too. It being a work computer even more, there is no reason to have such large screens, unless you are doing graphic design or medical stuff, where clarity as much as possible is a must.

I am totally content on my 19" CRT here at home on my main PC. Works great, not too too big. Fits like a glove and I will be sad to see the day I have to replace it.

I have a 24" wide screen, I think it is pretty nice it fills up my desktop, but I also do a lot of website design. I actually want 2 more of them so I can have 3x 24" wide screens. Which would really help with website production/programming.

For general use though, Anything bigger than 20" is kind of ridiculous.

4:3 screens are still being made. They are mostly for industrial use now. Like CNC machines. Though I'm not sure why the widescreen "hurts" your eyes so much. The widescreen is based on what is known as the "Golden Rectangle." Which is close to the 16:10 screen aspect ratio. The idea behind the golden rectangle is it is a shape that is most pleasing to the eyes.

If you really have to scan your eyes across the screen a lot or having problems seeing the screen, it sounds like you need to get your eyes checked. Specifically for your peripheral vision. The way you scan your eyes back and forward on the surface is because your not comfortable using your peripheral vision, or your peripheral vision is so small that at the low angles that your seeing the screen is blurry.

Yeah, I would definitely get your eyes checked.

Yeah, our business went with the widescreens because the 4:3s were $20-50 more per monitor which is ridiculous.


Well, whoever the hell postulated that and came to that conclusion is a damn fool because I DETEST having to scan such a wide area to see the same shit I could so easily see in 4:3:!:

You're a dumbass... I have 20/20 vision.

I have a 19" LCD-screen in Academy Ratio (aka. 1.33:1 or 1.37:1) for my computer. It works quite good, but screens in 1.78:1 feels a bit clumsy to me. Especially for movies, I've always preferred Cinemascope. Watching a movie in that format gives a much richer picture then 1.78:1 and movies in Academy ratio only looks decent on screens in 1.33:1.

Windows is poor in general IMO, but W7 was a big step forward in comparisson to Vista (which doesn't say much).

Windows 7 isn't retarded. It's great. I started using it when it first came out and I haven't had any desire to go back to XP. But if your hate for it is simply because it looks too pretty, you can easily make it look like XP. Simply right click on your desktop, go to personalize, and select the Windows Classic Theme.

Oh, and this is some hilarious hypocrisy considering you were the one bitching about Capcom preserving their 4:3 aspect ratios in their PSP compilations instead of stretching them to widescreen.

I understand full well I am doing nothing but to feed the trolls by offering any kind of response, it's just mind boggling how transparent these things are.

To offer something constructive...

I have no problem with 16:9 as long as the subject matter is designed for it. Anyone who decides to stretch from one aspect ratio to another has some serious issues. If I watch things designed for an original aspect ration, I expect them to be framed as such; not stretched out, and bent to fit. I love my widescreen monitor at home, gives me a ton of space to work with everything. I really don't understand the complaint about having more real estate, and since everything from DVD's, Blu-Rays to new video games are all designed with widescreen in mind, it would be pretty counterproductive to use an old monitor for those things. Though I do agree, I use an old TV to play Genesis and other things so that I don't HAVE to deal with the "frames" on the side. Also, those things look better on old TV's anyways.

I admit my current LCD monitor is a 4:3 19 inch LCD. But at the time when I got it the Widescreen ones didn't have good response times compared the 2ms I have with this one. However mine does have a 16:9 and 16:10 mode where if the resolution is say 1280x720 it will letterbox itself to properly display it.

I never had a problem looking at a widescreen. I never had to scan my eyes to see the entire picture. I have something that most humans have called peripheral vision.

My only complaint is that old games look like ass on them and I fear for the future when old TVs aren't around anymore.

As a developer, I find a widescreen is a must if you don't have multiple displays. There's no other way to see everything you NEED to see at once - it's a widescreen display or multiple displays. At the time I put together my current dev system, one good widescreen was cheaper than two good 4:3 displays.

In my office, there are a few dudes who have a setup akin to Kevin Smith's from the newest Die Hard movie; about eight different massive widescreen monitors, with dozens of I-dunno's and watcha-majigs rocking the screen everywhere.

This was a rant and nothing more. Not a "what are your thoughts"... because I could give a shit less what y'all think of widescreen.



I started a thread about cool DLC games to play on the PS3... why don't y'all save your energy for that instead..
