These Sonic 3 vs polls are getting silly now...
I'll go with S3, but only because I'm not too familar with SMW..
IMO Super Mario World is overrated.
Plus Sonic 3 came out 4 years after SMW and 6 years into the Genesis' life cycle, whereas SMW was a launch title. HUGE difference of understanding and application of HW.
more like
james pond 3 vs super mario world
I'm a massive Sonic fan and hate to say this, but there really is no comparison here. Sonic 3 (and Knuckles) is great, but Super Mario World is one of the greatest games ever made, full stop. The only Mario game that surpasses it is Mario 3.
SMW > Sonic 3
SMW = Sonic 2
Even though SMW is not among my favorite Marios, I'd still take it over vanilla Sonic 3. Once again, whether it's S3K or not is the dealbreaker.
Other than them both being platformers they're very different. I always saw SMW as a step back from Super Mario Bros. 3 but that's hardly a disparaging comment.
S3&K is one of my absolute favorite games but my own personal tastes aside I feel SMW is the better game.
I love the Sonic games but i always felt that you got more bang for your buck with Super Mario World.
It truly was a great launch game, the gameplay was relaxing and there were so many fun levels.
And i don't know about you guys, but personally i did not have a lot of money left over after buying my console,
so most of the times you were stuck with the packed in game for a couple weeks.
but with Mario World that did not matter, it was like you got many many many little games all wrapped in a delicious packaging.
Super Mario World, hands down.
While Sonic 3&K added some variety to the gameplay by being able to play as multiple character, and use different shields, the gameplay was largely the same as previous titles in the series otherwise, and though the levels were much larger, splitting the games into two parts hurt it in my opinion, and many of the later zones were simply not fun to play. I think S3&K is a fantastic game, the best in the series overall, and it took the next step in feeling like an epic, cohesive story that you were playing through.
Super Mario World really felt like a large improvement over the formula of the third game, it was littered with stages, and plenty of worthwhile secrets. The level design was top notch all the way through, the worlds were inventive and beautiful. It's the best 2D Mario in my opinion, perhaps the best Mario game of all time. Whereas the Sonic games felt like a slow evolution from one game to the next, the Mario series seemed like a jump from one canon game to another, after seeing major changes between the first and third games, and then yet another jump from the third to Super Mario World.
Of course, what matters most is gameplay, and how fun it is to play. And for my money, I find Super Mario World much more enjoyable in this regard.
Sonic anything, hands down. All those Mario games are overrated. I'd take Sonic Spinball over SMW. I don't see how anyone could rate them over any Sonic game, period. They're slow, with bad art and poor level design. They're made to appeal to 8 year-olds... so I guess there are a lot of 8 year-olds here. :?
