Why are you in this discussion then? GO play TETRIS!
Oh ok, well I've been playing SF games since it first came out on the SNES(Street Fighter 2), so yea that probally is the reason you're more forgiving so to speak.
Yea, you should play the past games then, however 3rd Strike is like the best true SF game(you know, not counting the Vs series).
I wish they would put 3rd Strike on a handheld, that would've been awesome.
PS. another good game you may want to try, is the SF Alpha series, however be warned, getting supers out in that, is annoying as hell compared to the perfected SF 3rd Strike(out of all the normal SF games that have supers, sadly 3rd stike is the only one that perfected it. Lol speaking of which, that's another bad thing about SF4, supers work perfectly in 3rd strike, yet they when back to the old crappy super formula).
Just saw your "watch how it's done" comment in another thread.
Why are you still here? I don't understand the point of trolling. Is it a lack of friends? I'm geniunely curious. The 3DS is something that interests me, and I'd like to talk about it with other gamers. You come in, bitch about the same things you always bitch about, and act like you've done a fine job.
If trolling is all you're here for, you don't even come close to matching the legends around here. TheEdge makes you look like the sanest person on the planet, and 17days could out-straight you anytime of the week.
My point is your act is tired. You're nothing special. Find some other place to bother.
The turn based combat system is a western invention. Western RPG's, which Japanese RPG's are based on, are rooted in pen and paper RPG's like Dungeons and Dragons, which are essentially a fantasy-take on colonial wargaming. If you boil it down to the bare bones basics, RPG's on the whole are essentially based on tactical wargames, and the tactical genre of RPG (which actually started well before Tactics Ogre and all that, there are many early D&D video games and the like that follow this model) comes directly from these routes. Dungeon crawling games like Ultima and Wizardry focus more on exploration and storyline, and combat is simplified, without taking rules of movement etc. into account for the most part. So every genre of RPG is essentially rooted in, at the very least, Pen and Paper RPG's, which were of western design, specifically. I am not too familiar with tactical wargaming, but it was European at the very least, so you could even bring it back to that. But RPG's, and everything they are rooted in, certainly did not come from any kind of Japanese origin.
I've been ragging on the $250 price tag. GO play your buggy GT5 that you paid $100 for.
Me ragging on you for being willing to support this new 3DS at $250 is not trolling. It's me ragging on a customer willing to support something I don't feel is worth that much money.
Do you have any idea what would happen on launch day if NO ONE bought a 3DS at $250... do you know what would happen...
Nintendo would lower the price eventually.
So my complaint about the price has all the relevance in the world when it comes to expecting better products at fairer prices across the board in the Gaming Industry... both for Software and Hardware.
I have legitimate points, you don't like them and it's easy for you to resort to calling them, "trolling posts". That's fine, I've come to understand the limits and total lack of comprehension on your part when it comes to one expecting quality in the Gaming world. If you plan on supporting Mediocrity then expect to be ridiculed... simple as.
Yeah I hate when they make chracters stupidly hard to unlock its pointless just have them unlocked beating Arcade mode (Like in Soul Calibur and Tekken series) not all this beat arcade on hard then move onto certain spots for a few seconds on the selection screen that some Street Fighter games used.
Though Super Street Fighter 4 and Tekken 6 you started with everyone unlocked straight away.
The 3DS is a joke at the moment for many Reasons
:1 It has a tiny useless charge pack with a wire so small you could'nt even charge it and play siting on a couch right next to a power supply .
:2 Way two short battery charge Life under 5 hours is just pathetic.
:3 It to Expensive and it costs more in all of Europe for no reason at all.
4 The Idiots Region locked it. Why would you do this to a Handheld the Purpose of one is you can play it anywhere so I should be able to buy software for it anywhere in the world as well.
There Excuse for Region Locking is for Age Ratings. This Excuse is total BS because all Sony consoles and the 360 both have worldwide age rating parental locks on them.
I hope the 3DS gets hack to hell which will happen even faster now because they region locked it.
Interesting as hell... I didn't know all that. I played a decent amount of Mechwarrior (3rd Edition) when I was 14-16 with a buddy. It makes sense to me now... so that's where this 'tactical' turn based dynamic comes from.
thks for the straight and informative reply
Huh I'm confuse, how did the discussion change into a jRPG discussion/Fake Oldschool bashing them.
Yo Oldschool, get the hell out of the thread, I sware all you ever do is bash turn based RPGs, which the other poster is correct, originated in the west.
To Olls: Don't bother lol, Oldschool could never handle a Wizerdry game, are you crazy, besides knowing him he wouldn't even give it a chance due to what he would call bad graphics.
Though nothing will change you if you don't already like RPG's, I think a lot of people are confused on the origins. There is a definite tendancy with some people to equate RPG's with Japan, and if they are not open to that, they will immediately discredit the genre. But that is a misunderstanding. RPG's that come from Japan often have the same issues that plagues many anime (according to the opinion of people who do not like these things, anyways) which is melodramatic storytelling, outlandish characters, and especially in more recent games, effeminate male leads and outlandish costumes, etc. Whether it is Square Enix, NiS, or even Atlus, you will find these things to be typical in many Japanese RPG's. But all hope is not lost.
The Dark Spire for the Nintendo DS, though it is Japanese published, is heavily influenced by Wizardry. It has a very Westernized art style, and a crushingly hardcore difficulty typical of very old computer RPG'S. The Shin Megami Tensei games, most notable the first two games for Super Famicom, Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne for the PS3, and Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey for the DS, despite their very Japanese sounding titles and use of Japanese demonology, have many elements which bring them up to par story and atmosphere wise with Western made RPG's such as Mass Effect and Dragon Age. The storylines for each of these games rely on heavy philosophy, adult themes, very dark, nihilistic atmosphere, and sociological controversy; a far cry from the simplistic "let's save the world, everyone do your best!" mentality portrayed in many of the more hum-drum lite RPG's from Japan. Their stark (yet surprisingly accurate, if you think about it) look at religion, including the controversial decision to include God as a sometimes optional final boss throughout the series, would have created quite a stir had they been released back in the day, and it is only in the last decade when we have started to see games from the series hitting North American shores (apart from a few here and there, such as Persona and Demi Kids.)
So even among the stereotypical Japanese RPG, you can find some gems that are approachable enough from a Western standpoint without spiraling into a morass of anime cutesiness, and stereotypical cliche plotlines and characters, since that seems to be one of your main complaints about those games. However, if the gameplay is not for you, it's simply not for you, and no amount of history or information is going to change that; not many of us enjoy fighting hordes of monsters for hours in order to gain those next few experience points, or developing long-winded strategies in order to go for a low-level run in some of our favorite RPG's.
Only DSiWare is region locked. You can still play import games on it, like any other DS.
You can say I'm whining about the price, and I love the DS it's my favorite modern gaming platform so I'm in no way against Nintendo, but the bottom line is I'm still not paying $250 for it.
And inevitably Nintendo will release a redesign that fixes most of the issues with the original model so I have a policy of never being an early adopter especially when it comes to dealing with Nintendo. I haven't even played the thing yet though I have no idea if I'll even like it.
