Unless you're rich enough not to care, why buy a console at launch - when it's so pricey, there aren't many games (and the ones there are cost too much), and there's no knowing whether the thing is going to crap out on you? I waited for price drops and a decent library of good games to buy before getting my DS Lite and Wii, so if I get one of these too it likely won't be for years yet. :P
Damn, apparently, it's only DS games. DSi and 3DS titles are region-locked. Also, you can import DSiWare games to the 3DS (not the other way around). WTF Nintendo?Quote:

I think everybody thought the DS was going to be pretty crappy from the get go as well (I know I sure as hell did) but because it was backed by good 3rd party publishers, and because Nintendo had a corner on the handheld market at the time, it ended up being a winner. The DSlite and the DSi models are among the nicest consoles I have ever seen in my life, and the 3DS is going for nice aesthetics right out of the gate this time around.Quote:

It would really surprise me if this became Nintendo's next big failure. I think it will ultimately do about as well as the GBA or the DS. There are some big concerns out of the gate, like battery life, and how well the 3D technology is actually going to work. I am personally interested in the system as a replacement for my current DS which can also play new 3DS exclusives. But I can definitely see how launch may not be as appealing for some.
I doubt it will bomb, or be a failure, and there are some high points about it that I think are worth a look. It's the first Nintendo handheld with a "joystick" for one (even though I honestly think they would have been better off with dual sliders; no more hook-hand for me like after playing Monster Hunter, thanks.) the graphics quality is a huge improvement over the original DS, and they now seem to be far more interested in online capabilities, including the ability to have a friends list, and jump into games, etc. For my money, this is even a step up from the Wii.
And here's the other thing; the Wii is probably one of the most gimmicky consoles of all time. Yet out of the three systems this generation, it plowed the competition, especially early on. Nintendo has chosen a new focus group for the next generation of consoles, and it is not hardcore gamers. I actually think it was fairly astute of them to go the 3D route, considering the rise in popularity, while simultaneously being able to say "and look, no glasses!" I don't know how they plan to market other media, but I can bet you dollars to doughnuts that one of their marketing strategies will involve 3D movies. I could easily see something like Dispicable Me or whatever outselling a majority of 3rd party release games, which could be another formidable source of profit for them.
I am excited, not necessarily to get the console in my hands, but just because it really feels like Nintendo dug themselves out of a shallow grave the last few years. Though the N64 and Gamecube did adequate, at the time the Gamecube was the rejected little brother of the three consoles in that generation, and most people preferred Playstation to N64. When the Wii came out and trounced the competition, it was kind of a happy moment for me to see one of my favorite childhood companies (even when I kind of hated them during my years as a soldier of Sega) rise up again and take their place on the gaming throne. So if anything, it just fascinates me to see where they have been, and where they are going; no matter how rocky the road ends up being in the end.

Ubi soft seems to have put hardly any effort into their 3DS games though most look laggy and not much better than a DS Title of theirs.
But Rayman 3d is by far the most Laziest of their Early 3DS games because it's just Rayman 2 a game that had a DS port as well early in the DS's life that itself was a port of the N64 version.

A few XBLA Titles are going to be 3DS Retail games as well Like Omega 5 and the XBLA saints row game that is not out yet. I doubt those ports will be $15 or less like they are on XBLA either.
One of the reasons why the DS was so popular was for it Huge Libary to Suit anyone's taste and it begin region free but the 3DS will suffer in both of these areas in Europe thanks to iIntendo begin greedy.
Yeah I must admit I ragged pretty hard on the DS early on like a lot of people and ended up eating crow with that one once it hit its stride. It took a while though, the launch of the original DS was pretty awful too and there weren't that many good games to speak until it was out for over a year. But that's a good thing, it's good to be wrong about this sort of thing. Harsh criticism is important anyway since it will lead to better products.
I agree that smart phone games are becoming serious contenders in the handheld market. I think the main reason we're getting the 3DS is because it differentiates itself from that market by bringing something new to the table.

Thanks to Region locking Europe never gets most stuff by Atlus because they always Lock it along with American Japanese Localiation company ASKYS. Both refuse to make a European Branch so all of Europe misses out on their games.
But it is mostly Japanese developers who Treat Europe like crap Namco are pretty bad at this yet for big titles like Tekken 6 they is no massive delay at all yet it took them over 6 months after America to bring out Namco Museum 360 which all the titles included have been Localised already.
They really need to stop making games on Certain Consoles Region Locked but other console versions of the exact game are region free. They did this with the Blazblue series Region Locked on 360 but Region free on PS3 and thanks to delays that if the game was Region free to begin would have been no problem. Europe got both the Original and Update in the same year im sure that really helped sales of the Original version.
Region locking the handhelds just encourages people to pirate the games instead. I don't know how hardware designers can be so stupid. We live in a global economy these days and we should be able to buy and play games from overseas without needing to jump through hoops.
Why is region locking such a big deal? We've had it on consoles since physical cart sizes mattered. Who cares? Does everyone here really import a ton of DS games? Seriously, I'd like to know.
I've only purchased one import title for a handheld... EVER. Moero! Nekketsu Rhythm Damashii Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan 2. And that's just because I fell in love with Elite Beat Agents.
I think complaining about region locking, which has become a standard practice, is just complaining for the sake of complaining.
live in Europe and you understand why they treat us like crap making us wait months or even years for games or they never come out at all. If it was not for the DS port of Chrono Trigger Europe would of never got that game and that port of over decade old SNES game.Quote:

The PS3 and PSP do not lose a ton of sales just because their Region free this is proof you do not need region locking on consoles no other enertain ment media has it either. You never see Region Locked Music Cd's or Book or car parts do you? Why should Video games be diffrent and why should making them region free be classed as a bad thing no one has ever got sued for making Region Free DVD players have they.
Half of my DS and GBA collection is American so yes Region Locking does matter because half of my collection would not work if it was on those consoles.
Region Locking no longer needs to Exist in any form and that includes worthless sites like Hulu that are just blank webpages for 90% of the World it is called the Worldwide Web for a reason not the European/ Asian/ american Web.

Just preordered a 3DS today. "Cosmic Black", which is just... black. I'm excited though! I was able to put about $90 on it without selling my DSi just yet.
The plan is to transfer my DSi content over to my 3DS, but there's no telling how Nintendo plans on doing this, or how long they will take to roll this feature out. Regardless, I'm glad it's a feature they're including.
People seem to be pretty upset that basic features won't be available at launch, but rather with a firmware update. These include the browser and virtual console. While I couldn't care less about the browser (have you tried the opera browser on the DSi? It's awful! Any smart phone makes it look ancient) I am disappointed the virtual console wont be available day 1. Call me a sucker, but I'd love to play some Super Mario Land or Link's Awakening (the BEST Zelda game) while I wait for big 3DS releases.
