My '96 model 2 was modded about 6 years ago, and the entire board was changed because the sound was horrible. Now I have great sound, and it looks awesome with my model 2 Sega CD and 32X attached.
Even so, I still want a pre-TMSS model 1. They just look so darn sexy!
Well I guess I have a confession to make......recently I have only been playing my Genesis games on my Nomad because my Genesis has not been hooked up for months...
I've been playing on my Nomad for the past week or so because the AC cord for my 32X was frayed and I've had to wait to get another one.
^ Nomads produce an awesome sound!
There are different variants of each model out there. There is ZERO difference between a model 1 VA7 and most decent model 2s. However, there are also a lot of model 2s that sound like crap.
Have you even read what I wrote or how did you miss that ANYONE would notice the difference once they had both extremes at home ?
Not true, Chilly. As soon as I plug in a VA7 Genesis Model 1 or any VA0/VA1/VA1.8 Genesis 2, I can immediately tell the sound is considerably worse than my VA3 Genesis Model 1s, VA5 Japanese MegaDrive Model 1, VA6 Genesis Model 1, VA2/VA2.3/VA3/VA4 Genesis 2s, VA2 Genesis 3, CDX and Nomad. This is on a cheap $150 Electrohome TV whose speakers aren't the best. And whenever I let any of my friends listen to my VA7 Genesis Model 1 and my VA0/VA1/VA1.8 Genesis 2s, they notice the hissing and distortion right away.
I will point something out: most TVs muffle the hissing and distortion of the VA0/VA1/VA1.8 Genesis 2 if you use your system through RF. You can still hear a hint of hissing, but it's less noticeable than using Composite video/S-Video/RGB and Mono/Stereo audio output. When using Composite, S-Video or RGB, the sound coming off of the multi-A/V out is not mixed in with the video signal, so the hissing becomes VERY noticeable.
What really kills the Genesis Model 2 for me is not just sound problems on any motherboard revision older than VA3, but also the fact the video quality is generally horrible. Only my VA2, VA2.3 and VA4 Genesis 2s have good video; the VA0/VA1/VA1.8 motherboard in my Genesis 2s have Samsung's jailbar-artifact-inducing KA2195D, which makes the picture look REALLY bad. Even my VA3 Genesis 2 with its CXA1645 has the same nasty vertical lines as the VA0/VA1/VA1.8 Genesis 2s. This is only in Composite; in RGB, the video looks like Fusion with no graphical filters enabled. I haven't tried to get S-Video out of my VA3 Genesis 2 to see if the vertical bars affect anything that's not RGB. If that's the case, there's a problem with Sega's video circuitry on those boards. The vertical lines problem on the VA0/VA1/VA1.8 Genesis 2s, however, is caused by the use of the Samsung KA2195D because those lines do not appear on the RGB output, only in Composite(and the KA2195D does not output S-Video).
You guys shouldn't be ashamed of using a Nomad. They're a Genesis 2 with a pre-VA7 Genesis Model 1's sound quality. But the sound coming off the headphone jack has a noticeable electrical hum in the background. On a pre-VA7 Genesis Model 1, there is a little background hiss, but when you're using a pre-VA7 Genesis Model 1 on a TV with a 3.5mm headphone jack to RCA cable, you won't hear the hiss unless you stick your ears next to your TV's speakers.
Because most people outside of this board really don't care that much. Truth be told, though I just happen to own a model 1, neither do I.
Way to cut off the rest of my post. I understand that you would be able to tell the difference with both sitting in front of you but it doesn't matter because the vast majority of people just don't care because I don't feel the difference is as night and day as some of you make it out to be. You're not going to make anyone who doesn't care about sound quality suddenly care by going on and on about how terrible their console's sound is. If they already know they don't have the best available sound then they already know it and have already chosen not to do anything about it. Someone who doesn't know about it and learns and wants to get a different console because of it is fine too but there's no reason for everybody to adhere to the apparent gold standard or that it makes them a lesser fan of the console for doing so.Quote:

The people you should be going after are the ignorant saps on other forums who drone on about the Genesis having terrible sound because they've played some shitty clone console or bad emulator.
... um, ...okay?! Thanks for contributing to this discussion.
...or because they played a shitty VA7 model 1 or model 2.
I think you turn around what happened here. This topic got flooded by people who claim that the difference a) doesn't exist, b) isn't anywhere near as dramatic as stated, and/or c) try to discredit people who insist on there being a difference as "audiophiles" and accuse me of witchcraft.
I don't mean audiophile as an insult. I'm just trying to get across that not everybody considers this as big a deal as you do. I'm sorry if it came off rude. My opinion is still that the difference isn't that dramatic for the concerns of the average person.
But who knows I was probably just spoiled by my good model 2.
Damn straight. IMO the Model 1 with the Model 1 SCD is Sega's best looking console.
Rep comin'!
But back on topic. I have had my Model 1 since 1991. I don't have much experience with Model 2's. But I will say this. They sound a Hell of alot better than the AtGames shit being released.
Sorry, but it got "flooded" because it's true. If the majority of posts say there's no difference compared to the scant few who disagree, it's clear that most people CAN'T tell the difference since MOST are saying that is indeed the case. It's the very definition of "most". ;)
And I know where you were last full moon! :D
Lol. This thread is funny now. Are we really turning against each other over who prefers what model? Haha. It's the Genny, baby! Who cares? Give me anything but a clone system and I'll make good use of it.
The mob is not always a good indicator =P
Seriously, I think a number of people posting either have a model 1 *or* a model 2 and thus don't know what the fuzz is all about. Then there are those who got good model 2s (and/or bad model 1s). Then there is (probably) a minority who indeed have headphones or speakers that are sooo incredibly bad that they can't tell the difference.
All of this is exactly why it took two decades to finally have proof for the difference between model 1 (plus Nomad / X'eye / CDX / model 3) vs the (bad) model 2s.
hehe ^ ^
