I pre-ordered and purchased mushihimesama futari and I don't even own an xbox360 (yet).

^You're the man, then. Lol. Shmups are just about the only reason why I want a 360. :D

i always think the "shmups" genre is referring to games where you walk around town shooting people(like beatemups only with a gun) kinda like robocop vs terminator.

i like the term "shooters" better for these types of games.

musha is without a doubt my all time fave shooter. perfect length, perfect difficulty, perfect soundtrack.(to me) and a blast to play on a huge tv with some awesome stereo sound cranking out of the headphone jack of my model 1 through a nice home stereo system and a sega brand arcade stick.

Shump is a portmanteau composed of 'shoot them up'. Anyway I was never really good at those games. My favourites include:

Gunbird 2
Raiden I+II
Under Defeat
The 194X games
Ether Vapor
Einhander

I also have the entire TG16 library on the DS so I can play short bursts of shmups at will.

I very much prefer On-Rails Shooters to traditional shmups. Generally better aesthetics, easier difficulties and heck maybe even stories that kind of make sense?

I tend to prefer horizontal shmups over vertical, I also don't like bullet hell stuff, I expect the game to have some level design not bullet patterns that cover the screen. I like railshmups too, like Panorama Cotton and Rez.
My fav shmup is Thunder Force IV, I like Gradius, Salamander, LifeForce a lot too. Triggerheart Exelica is rather fun on DC, nice swinging mechanic :)

I don't know if I can pick an absolute favorite, but if I had to try, I'd say Mars Matrix. It's one of the few games that I'll play, beginning-to-end, over and over again in one sitting. The Thunder Force series is pure awesome, and I have a real soft spot for trouble shooter.
For rail shmups, I'd have to go with the big 3: Starfox 64, Panzer Dragoon, and Omega boost. Especially Omega Boost, because it has a motherfucker of a soundtrack.

I really hate shmups that discipline You for using any of the special weapons/abilities You have. Take Nanostray on the DS for example. You have a plethora of options to use, but if You actually use any of them, You're given lower grade. Fired Your bombs? grade reduction. Used the item-collect button? grade reduction. Fired Your super weapon? grade reduction. So, If You want to earn a decent score, You have to charge into battle, alone, against impossible odds, in a ship armed to the teeth, but intentionally only use Your standard shot.

I love both horizontal and vertical shmups. What I really love about shmups, is when they pack in scenery changes in a single stage. Maybe 3 different sections. Love that. Breaks the level up.

Spriggan Mark 2 is one of my all time favorite Shmup



I love the attention to small details and events that play out in the game. And the fast pace of the game. The game is very fun on hard and super hard difficulty (plus you get to see the real last boss on those modes).

Shooters are cool (what does Shmup stand for anyway?)... I've got some for NES/SNES/Genesis/PS1/PS2/Wii/and a decent amount of TG16 on the VC.

Most of them are too hard for me to beat the first couple levels, but they're fun for 'pick up and play' type sessions.


The Xbox360 game shown in that first video with the bullets covering the screen looks retarded. If I came across a game like that, I'd simply walk away in frustration and amazement that someone actually thought that'd be fun. To each their own though.

Classic, non bullet hell shmups do work by memorizing each stage, so you gotta play a game more than once or a couple of times to learn how to master it.

I love shooters, but I'm not very good at them. I generally stick to 16 bit shooters for this reason, but I have been playing some more recent stuff though.

I just bought Sonic Wings 1 off of ebay! I have 2 and 3, but I've never played the original except on an emulator.

I like the Non Bullet Hell Shooters more than the Bullet Hell ones myself.

Please do not allow this stupid video to tell you what bullet hell is like. You're including yourself in one of the sorriest gaming misconceptions of all time, one that has practically killed a noble gaming genre.

First of all, 90% of shmuppers do not play ULTRA in Mushihimesama Futari because it's just either (a) retarded or (b) aimed at people with severe out-of-this-world brain connections such as that guy who beats Ikaruga with both ships by himself.

ULTRA is just one of three main game modes in Futari. The other ones are ORIGINAL and MANIAC, and they're seen as the correct "sane" way to try to beat a game like this.

You can start approaching bullet hell by trying stuff like Blue Wish Ressurrection (PC freeware), Radirgy, DonPachi, Giga Wing or even Mushihimesama ORIGINAL. You'll be surprised to know that these aren't harder than, let's say, Truxton, Raiden or Gradius II.

Not on Ps2 no but both Strikers 1945 1 and 2 where given Seperate Releases on Ps1 along with Sol Divide in America as Budget Titles.

And that Mushihimesama Futari Video is of mega hard mode that looks as impossible like Though the Fire and Flames on Guitar Hero 3 on Expert. Although some how my 8 year old brother can beat it on Hard and do the Story mode on Expert though no idea how he does it Id struggle on Easy.

HMMM, I like Galaga, probably my favorite shmup of all time.

Yes! Gaiares is also one of my all time favorite shmup. Doesn't get nearly enough respect IMO. The game also have some of the most beautiful graphics/colors/designs for a shmup on Genesis.

There's a TG-16/PCE emulator for the DS? I've never heard of it. I know there is one on the GBA, but that will only work on the DSlite or original DS because of the GBA cart slot.

I hadn't played this game until a few years ago. I'd have to agree. It doesn't feel like it does anything special in comparison to other shmups. I mean, I guess the whole bullet-cancelling dynamic was kinda cool, but that was the only thing that makes it stand out. So many games have done that better. IMO it makes ikaruga invalidated. I guess you could say it was the start of something, though.

Ikaruga is more like a puzzle game with shooter controls in spots. It also happens to be one of my favorite (if not THE favorite) game in the genre.

I have been playing the FUCK out of some Dragon Breed on the Irem M81.

Most of my gaming is shmup gaming.

Lol. Some of you guys are confusing Shmups (Shoot theM ups/Shoot 'M Ups) with Run N Gun Games. I still love both genres, btw. They're just sub-genres of a bigger genre: Shooters. Anyways, rock on folks. :D

I've been playing the hell out of Gradius V lately. Awesome game, I just miss the Moai levels. Oh well, I have Gradius III and IV for the Moai fix. I realize it's not thought of too highly, but I recently bought SolFeace for the SegaCD. I really have been enjoying the game despite the mediocre reviews I've read about it.

The only time when I don't play shmups is when friends come over and I divert to fighters and racers. Only for the fun of it.

A couple of years ago I had this epiphany that gave me a new direction, both in playing and collecting. Shmups are my gaming life, and I can't imagine myself playing any other genre with the same enthusiasm. >>> infamous quote from a more famous Edward: [about shmups] "You are my life now!" :rofl:

Anyway, I have complete shmup collections for the SMS, DC, PS2, Saturn, PC Engine, 360 and the Mega Drive (short of manual/box for Magic Girl and manual for Adventurous Boy - if these ever existed...)

So.. you have Sapphire and Sylphia? What over expensive shmups are there for the other systems? (I know there's got to be some $200+ shmups for MD or Saturn)

I'm not really a Shmup fan, but there are a couple I do like:

Space Harrier
After Burner
Silpheed
Vertical Force (Virtual Boy)

Otherwise, Shmups really don't do anything for me. They're just, eh. Especially those new ones like Deathsmiles, I really can't stand them. Vertical Force I like because it's more simple, not a ton of bullets coming at you, not a ton of enemies, not one-hit death, not un-dodgeable bullets like in the new ones. I wish there were more that were just more simple like that. Same goes for Silpheed.

I LOVE Space Harrier and After Burner though. There's just something about those games that are just awesome. They don't play like regular shmups though.
