So since there was a thread talking about the Model I vs Model 2 Genesis, i was wondering, why did Sega do this?
What was it that they redesigned the Genesis and Sega CD? Same with the Artwork?
What made them move from the Silver and black logo to the Colored stripes down the left side of the game boxes?
Probably to save on the cost to make the hardware.
As for the boxart, I feel it was done to make the Genesis more accessible in the market. A fresh coat of paint to slick up an aging product, if you will. It at least allowed Sega to sell the Genesis, Game Gear, Sega CD, 32X (and eventually Saturn) under the same recognizable banner.
What year did this occur? 1993 or 1994? I don't seem to remember exactly
I love the red candy stripe. like guntz said, it was a fresh and new design for an aging product. On the other hand the genesis models only got slimmer and cheaper, to save money I suspect
Model 2 was to save money and sell the console cheaper. I think the red candy stripe was to keep the look fresh. I personally hate it and thought it took away from the cover art. I also thought the blue Mega Drive looked way better.

The grid looked like an aged concept later on in the Genesis' lifespan. Still, I prefer the black and gray grid style.
I think the grid design looked ust classy, and I absolutely prefer it from blue stripe/red stripe designs of later years.
Actually I think it is the nicest box design for videogames to date.
I do not liike the clunky Genesis logo of the grid-boxes though, I prefer the sleek Mega Drive logo of EU versions.
I like the stripes better than the grid...the grid looks horribly dated to me while the stripes still look decent.

but yeh, they do indeed look dated now, and im guessing they also did back then too - the whole grid thing was a "hangover" of master system days anyway....
i remember having a SMS and thinking the boxart looked pretty "cheap" and crass even when i was a young un...
I think they both have their pros and cons. The grid doesn't cause a color clash with the box art like the stripes do but the stripes looked a lot more striking and modern at the time.
Model 2: Probably to cut the production costs of the system. I don't know if the end-buyer saw this savings in the price or not, as I had a model 1 and didn't care by then. :p
Red Stripe: Defines the brand. You see a game with no red stripe, no obvious genesis markings and you see just that, a game. You see a game with a red stripe on it saying Genesis and you immediately relate the game to the Genesis. It's just the extra step past slapping your logo on something and helps people think of your product before the 'other guy's version' if there even is one.

I'm just going to say, the grid was painfully 80's. The stripe still holds up pretty well.
