I thought the original Sonic special stages were super-easy! Especially with the cheat, but even without it's a fairly simple matter to have all the emeralds by the end of the Spring Yard Zone. I suppose it depends on how intent you are on collecting enough rings for a continue. Though I thought the original Sonic The Hedgehog was a MUCH harder game overall than later installments (particularly for someone who started out playing Sonic 2). That Sonic Spin Dash makes a BIG difference. And the Labyrinth Zone is just plain EVIL!
The special stages in Sonic 2 can be tough if you insist on dragging Tails along. IMO, he's dead weight. It goes much smoother without him, and what with the plentitude of starposts in the Emerald Hill Zone, I've often collected all the emeralds before I've even proceeded to the Chemical Plant!
Now the Sonic 3 special stages are a bit of a challenge. Especially for someone like me, who's anal-retentive about getting ALL the rings and nabbing the perfect score. Actually, most of them aren't that bad, except the fifth (ugh! That bit where you have to jump over the two rows of bumpers almost always trips me up!) and seventh emeralds, which are quite challenging. And some of the S&K special stages are downright difficult. Many instances where it's very easy to trip yourself up! I've often found myself in the Lava Reef zone asking myself, "will I make it?"
