Romhacking a game to completely change the sound engine....that would most likely require disassembling the rom. As far as I know the only rom that's actually been disassembled is sonic 1, and that took years.Quote:

That Golvellius comparison video I made shows pretty clearly how PSG can sound just as good if not better than FM on its own for some compositions. R-Type is another really great example of PSG audio being just as good if not better than FM. A lot of Master System games with FM are really quiet and just don't sound as polished as the PSG soundtrack, especially After Burner. I'm also glad that Zillion and Quartet only have PSG sound tracks, they are perfect exactly as they are.
While Quartet sounds good in PSG, we can't really tell how it would've sounded like in FM. If the original arcade game is any indication though, it would've sounded better:

I'm not sure that sounds better than the PSG soundtrack though. Some of the instruments sound too sharp, and others too soft.Quote:

That was all recorded from a real Sega Mark III Master system. The Gam*boy I had which had FM sound also sounded the same.
That would be odd, the board I bought from viletim at SMS Power definitely had the YM chip on it when I installed it in the expansion port. I guess I didn't check if it was a derivative, but it hasn't had any audio glitching like I have heard in emulation so far.Quote:

Mixed feeling on Tel's stuff. It's good, and he seems to go for the same characteristic sound as his C64 stuff, but therein lies the problem: the Master System's PSG just sounds really anaemic compared to the SID. I say that as a C64 fan though, so YMMV.

It describes more than one method already implemented and published by ancient X68000 programmers to play stereo PCM on the X68000.
It looks like the YM2151 can be exploited to play PCM!

The smooth panning trick sounds really cool.
The stuff that works on YM2151 will also work on YM2612. The output isn't gonna be very good though. A method that exploits the test register will work much better and is easier to do but will still sound not that good.
