to me, theres something far more satisfying and meaningful playing via the original hardware.
for one, i find its just way too tempting to constantly save state using emulation. that and the fact that games feel a bit throw away and i dont seem to have any attachment toward them compared to real hardware.
maybe im weird, but it just has a far more satisfying feel pulling a cart out of a box and plugging into the system as intended.
I quite like the novelty value of having Mega Drive and other games on the PC, and the posterity value of it all. I like the original hardware best though, don't get rid of it yet; unless of course you have no space.
It is of course true that Mega Drives are indestructable, if you built a house out of them (No 16 of course) you'd survive the nuclear holocaust and have somewhere to live with all the cockroaches. Plus Windows '37 would have trouble with emulators.
Mega Drive games are always better on hardware, hands down.
I utterly refuse to play a SNES game on hardware, though, emulators just sound that much better with controllable filtering...

So I've never played any game more than 5 or so minutes via emulation. For that I have the real hardware and I enjoy using it. For me that's something that won't change.
Hardware is better, but for those who cannot afford it, emulation is not that bad either.
I have to say though; one day, the consoles we have will just die altogether, while digital ROMS and emulation are potentially immortal.
fells MUCH better playing on real thing... But then again, emulation can tweak games, homebrew, etc...

Mostly hardware, but emulation for some titles
Example... Streets of Rage 3 for the Genesis. $50 for a hard copy or $8 for a digital download. Emulation wins me over in that situation... but at the same time, I would like to own the real cart.
musha for $100 or $8 for a digital download... again, Emulation wins me over and at that price, I give two shits about owning the real cart.
Other than situations like those ^, I'm all hardware.
If i were you guys, I would sell all that plastic for some good amount of money and play all those games for free on TV (Through PC>TV connection). :?

What a stupid and shameful thread. If one thinks emulation is as good as real hardware, and "free" (thievery), then why does he buy games at all? I personally buy all games I'm interested in and would never replace real hardware with emulation.

Downloading roms isn't thievery, it's piracy. There's a difference.
Matter of fact, the emulation scene is directly responsible for all that technical knowledge of these systems, that homebrew and other DIY dev'rs have relied on to build their works.
I own the real systems because of only one reason: nostalgia. I'm part collector for that reason, part purist for that reason, but more than the sum of those two parts - I'm more gamer than anything else. If for some reason I had to sell off all my stuff and was only limited to emulation as a choice to play games, I would. Even when I own the game and the system, I'll often use emulation to play that game. Because it's convenient. Yes, my PC is in my living room.
But what bothers me is the self centered greater than thou attitude of that they (collectors and purist) are better than someone who uses emulation just because of this self imposed status... when it really has nothing to do with gaming itself. If anything, emulation gamers are the purist form of gamers. They put the most importance on gaming of the former two.
How is it piracy? Pirates stole other people's property - to sell it for profit. The property isn't available to its original owner anymore.
Downloading ROMs is making yourself a copy. The original rights holder still is the original rights holder. All that happened was neither theft nor piracy but "copyright infringement" as the US law calls it. And even that is debatable as making copies in a non-profit environment would fall under fair use.

Lots of good responses, and the results bear out what we probably all knew. Most of us are collectors. We like the boxes, the cartridges, the tactile feel of snapping the cart into the Genesis, and the original graphics with all its limitations. It is interesting to note that about 10% rely on emulation. A new poll 10 years from now would be amusing for comparison's sake.
I've come to the conclusion lately that I'm keeping my Genesis stuff. I like having the games and collecting (although I have most of the games I want, and I'm trying not to buy games to just fatten my collection). As long as I play the Genesis with any regularity I'll likely keep it. There may come a day when my tv is too sophisticated for a Genesis, or my playing time diminishes to the point where keeping the collection (with the space that that inevitably takes up) will no longer be worth it. As many have pointed out, emulation isn't perfect, but it's pretty darn good these days.
The emulator is great for test driving games, and to date, it's the only way I can play Eliminate Down. I strongly doubt I will *ever* be able to afford a copy of that game, and it is one of the great shooters on the Genesis. If that makes me a thief, so be it. I doubt any software company will fare better because I choose to pay $500 for an used Genesis game, especially when said company likely doesn't exist any more and will NEVER release Eliminate Down on another platform...
I use emulation, but that's only because it's not that easy to find a genuine MD here (and I won't pay a cent for a clone) and if I used ebay, the delivery would cost more than the thing itself. Not talking about cartridges (legit non-pirate copies are pure unobtanium here).
I wish I could actually play some Revenge of Shinobi and Streets of Rage on my MegaDrive, but one of the cables is fucked up, so I keep my MD close to my bed and touch up the controller once in a while.

Emulators, but only because I can't play Sega Genesis on hardware.
Hardware whether it's a bootleg, repro, or flash cart game, I play on real hardware on a CRT TV with real controllers. Emulation is just to evaluate games.

Mostly because I can't stand playing while sitting on a chair with my face just about 20 cm away from the PC screen. I also can't stand playing Genesis / Mega Drive games with a Playstation pad. That's blasphemy.
With the real Mega Drive, I can play on my sofa, with my feet on the table. The TV is more than 2 meters away so that's much softer for my eyes. It's a much more enjoyable experience for me. And I like owning stuff too.
Growing up as a PC gamer I never had that problem with emulation because it feels just as natural to me to play games on the computer. I'm even pretty adept and comfortable with playing on a keyboard which I know is anathema to most people.
What's stopping you from hooking the thing up to your tv and using an actual genesis pad?Quote:

Copyright infringement is stealing. You are taking material which belongs to someone, without paying for it. Making copies for yourself doesn't fall under fair use, because you have no right to copy someone else's work with this intention.
Looks like about half the members of this forum are thieves then ;)
