Maybe you guys should forward your anger to Ben Heck himself, instead of just shooting the breeze...
First of all I'm pretty sure about 1 million 32Xes were sold. Wikipedia cites 665,000 as of 1994, and considering it launched in the fall of 1994 we can assume a few more were sold in 1995 before it was discontinued.
Second of all you missed the point, it's not number of sold that's important, it's the number of units produced. Sega overproduced the 32X. The were expecting it to sell extremely well as has been stated in interviews. So even if only 1 million were sold through retailers, we don't have an exact number of how many were dumped on the market just to get rid of inventory. We find far more new in box 32X systems than we do CDX systems which further enforces this point.
That's one less CDX in the world :(
If Ben Heck start to Make more..that's would be even less CDX's in the would and you would know what demand will do.....
Um, overproduction of the 32X really shouldn't be taken into account because a lot of them got turned into Picture Magics when Sega saw the 32x being a commercial failure. You all should be angry at Sega for that =P
There's still a CDX there, it's just in a new shell, with a new lease on life.
I already destroyed one myself haha.
When you make portables like this you have to cut the board in certain parts to make it fit. After this has been done I highly doubt that CDX will properly fit in it's original case anymore. Seriously, don't butcher a piece of history just so you can have a portable system and stroke your e-penis. If you must have a portable Sega CD get something that can run a Sega-CD emulator. For a portable Genesis there are plenty of clones out there.
And again, I bet there are still far more 32X systems out there than their are CDX systems.
Then you should complain against every single MD mod out there, including region mod, S-video and CCAM, since those involve modifying the hardware and the original models aren't being manufactured anymore, so once they're gone you can't get a new one, you need to get one from somebody.
A mod is very different. You aren't ripping the system apart, cutting it's circuit boards up to put it into a new portable case then throwing the rest away. You are just adding new AV outputs too it, making it able to play games from other regions, and improving sound quality.
A model 2 Genesis with a CCAM and S-Video is still a Model 2 Sega Genesis. A CDX that has been ripped apart and shoved into a portable is no longer a CDX. It's a butchered travesty.
Finally there are far FAR more Model 1, Model 2, and Model 3 Genesis systems out there than there are CDX systems.
This IS technically a mod. The CDX internals are still there. Also I bet the failure rate of a MD is much higher than you think. Also for the record, technically the CDX has replacements (MD + MCD, you know) so software won't complain. For the 32x there aren't even clones.
I suppose you should also rage if somebody takes a Picture Magic and turns it back into a fully functioning 32x just because it's rare... Right? (although in that case some hardware would indeed get lost)
This isn't a mod. It's a butchering of rare hardware. The CDX is rare, Sega didn't produce a lot and they didn't sell a lot either. A mod is where you keep the system in it's current form and add new features to it such as newer AV hook ups and what not. This however is gutting the system, cutting the actual board inside the system (Meaning it will NEVER fit properly in it's original case again), removing unwanted components (again ensuring it will NEVER go back into it's original case again), and most likely throwing away the old case just so you can shove it into an ugly new case and go "Lol I made a bulky awkward handheld I will most likely never actually take somewhere for fear it will skip and damage my discs."
A Sega CD is not a replacement for a CDX. If it was CDX's wouldn't cost so much or be considered such prized collection pieces.
Adding S-Video ports, CCAM, Region switches, and other things to a Sega Genesis doesn't destroy the system in the process like this does. It's still a Sega Genesis, but with new features. Making a portable like this however is not the same, as that is no longer a CDX. It's an ugly portable Sega CD.
As for the Picture Magic it depends. If the other parts of the Picture Magic no longer worked then fine, use it to make a new 32X. But even then, the mod can easily be undone since no modification to the board needs to be done. I could easily put that 32X board back in the Picture Magic System. I can't do the same with this CDX portable. When a portable is made like this so many components of the original system need to be removed and modified to get it to fit that it will most likely never be able to be turned back into its original state. That's the problem I have with it.
Just to illustrate how little these portable makers seem to care, I saw a person once take an SNES Model 2 he bought because the board was slightly smaller to use for a portable and instead of even properly removing the case he took a fucking saw to it and cut the thing apart and threw the case away. This kind of stuff really pisses me off. If you want a fucking portable system, either buy the official ones that were released, emulate it on a modern handheld, or at the very least use a fucking clone system so you don't destroy vintage system.
ben hecks mod was horrible.
