Alright people, I have planned to expand my genesis collection.
Recently picked up Fire shark and Elemental master carts.
Will be getting Vectorman, Lightening force, biohazard battle,steel empire soon.
I was a PCE nut, but now i am starting to connect with the genesis.
One thing, I want to buy eliminate down and Glaylancer, how can i play these on the American genesis. Is there a region lock?
No to both. There's no lock out BS on either of them. However, you will either need to shave off a couple of the edges on the cart slot so the Japanese cart will fit in it (they're a different shape in spots), or just buy a Game Genie and plug the carts into that.Quote:

Truxton and TFIII? Yes. TFIV? No. TFIV has the region lock on it. However, there is a Game Genie code made by Tony H. that will allow you to bypass that lockout. He's also made codes for various other MegaDrive region-locked games (Bare Knuckle III, Golden Axe III, etc.).Quote:

There's no point to buy Thunder Force IV in Japanese anyway, since it was released in North America (as Lightening Force).
It's usually pretty cheap, I got mine complete from a fellow forum member for like 10 or 15 bucks, complete. Great game, though!
Except that you have to go through the code screen every time you want to play a non-region locked game and it's more unstable. It's very easy to mod the cart slot and it looks good if you file the slot as opposed to taking cutting tools to it.Quote:

Agreed. Plus lets face the fact that butchering an expensive collectable import by sawing off pieces of the cart really doesn't make sense when you can just play it thru the game genie.Quote:

too bad it's worth arm and leg.
I don't think many have gone that route. Most just use a file on the cart slot of the Genesis and round the pointed edges that keep the Japanese cart from going in. Even so, the idea of doing such a thing to their system doesn't appeal to to everyone.Quote:

Eliminate Down is a mix bag. It has some really impressive and fantastic looking levels, then it has some really mediocre levels. Not that other shmups don't have that kind of design mixture, it just feels exaggerated in Eliminate Down. I dunno.Quote:

Now I can see picking up the Japanese version of say Dynamite Headdy or Contra Hard Corps over the US equivalents, but this strikes me as a case where it really doesn't matter. And I think the "benefits" you listed would be outweighed by the fact that you would have to enter a game genie code every single time you wanted to play it. Just my opinion, of course. :)
TL;DR version: Just get Lightening Force, OP.
It basically only comes down to whether or not you're anal about not having the misspelled "Lightening" or not.
I don't know why you would buy Tatsujin over Truxton either since I think you can trick the game into playing as Tatsujin if you really want.
I like to spell it lightening thunder force 4.
