I know not everyone is convinced of the iPhone as a playing platform... and in my opinion, Sonic 4 ep. 1 plays pretty horrible on that one... but Chu Chu Rocket, Gunstar Heroes and Super Monkey Ball, all for just 0.99$ each? Now that's quite a decent price (And Super Monkey Ball actually plays pretty nice on the device...)
Wow yea those are some sweet prices.
However as you hinted at, yea not convinced Its even good to play games on to begin with(although pricing like this will sure get people to want to try it out), you really need actual buttons to effective play a game, where not only will a touch screen interface feel wierd, but you'll be at high risk to hit the wrong control(sorry can't think of what to call it, since It's not a button).
Yup! A friend of mine got Shining Force for his iPhone and he enjoys it immensely. Just a buck. Good stuff.
As I mentioned, Super Monkey Ball actually plays pretty good - they decided to implement the Accelerometer as a controlling device, and it translates well to the game. I agree, though, that I miss actual buttons when playing the Sonic games, since it's very tricky to pull off a decent Spin Dash.
I could imagine, though, that Space Harrier, Shining Force or Chu Chu Rocket could control rather well even without buttons - I guess for 99 Cents, I will give those three a try...
I played Sonic on the click wheel ipod a bit. darned Labyrinth Zone, of course. This sounds better.

Not crazy about Super Monkey Ball -- it seems holding it flat (parallel to the floor) is registered as wanting to move it forward, like it expects you to hold it at an angle normally.

it is capable of playing games, it is far from optimized for playing them

Yeah, most of the games I've bought for my iPhone are tailored to take advantage of the app - NFS: Hot Pursuit being the one I've wound up playing the most lately. I have a couple of traditional games like Space Harrier II and SOR, but they're far from my most played list. .99 cents seems like my price point - anything over that and I won't consider it.
Yea, it should probally be good for tactics games as well(Romance of the three kingdoms, Dark Wizard, Brigandine, exc, and ofcourse any tactic RPG), but yea anything else, you're screwed.Quote:

Hell, despite the fact I hate cell phones, and like owning the actual games(meaning I'll still be buying the physical copy for the original hardware in any case), I would still probally be interested in one(even though I'll never use it as a phone), especially with games like Shining Force for $1(sadly, It's much more acceptable for an adult to be holding a cell phone, and screwing with that in public, then to be using a handheld gaming system).
Omg, from what I hear, there's already Sega CD games up for DL(There's probally more, but I know Vay is on them atleast), but if they put Sega Saturn games up there(you know, the games that should've been remade ages ago to begin with, because how awesome they are, combined with the fact Saturn epically failed outside of Japan), so many people would be all over that, It's not funny.
I dunno; I find Sonic 1 & 2 to be pretty playable on the iPhone. And there are some fun action or action/rpg games, like Dungeon Hunter and Hero of Sparta. Solomon's Keep in particular is good fun. If designed right, the touch interface can be quite playable.
The swiss army knife is a good analogy. It's not meant to be a high end chef knife. You have access to that when you're at home. When you're not at home, your swiss army knife is actually quite handy. In other words, it's a portable knife:) Same for the iPhone. All handhelds are crippled in some way or another. But I *always* have my phone on me, so whenever I have an unexpected wait, guess what? I always have games to play. So it is like a swiss army knife, not your first knife of choice, but it works much better than your fingers when you need a knife and you're out in the woods...
I downloaded Sonic Spinball and it's kind of lame. It's just the Genesis ROM with a pretend d-pad and ABC buttons on the touch screen. For some reason I expected better -- I mean, Chu Chu Rocket isn't a GBA ROM, it's fully made for iOS, with touch screen controls and even online play. I was thinking you'd tap the left corner of the screen for the left flipper, the right corner of the screen for the right flipper, and tilt to replace the d-pad controls of the original. It's kind of hard to control, the way it is now.
Also, the sound emulation is a little off. I am disappoint.
I wish they'd slash prices on a gaming device I actually own.
I've experimented with syncing a Wii remote to my Nexus One before for use with Gensoid, which worked quite well; the only drawbacks were the three-button Wiimote layout, and the fact you have to hold the phone on your knees, or prop it up or something. A hard keyboard would be a nice alternative, but they're built for texting, not games.
I'd try using a Wii Classic Controller, but it's a lot of £££ just for something I don't really do a lot of 'on the go'.
