Is the 32x worth buying for Kolibri?

Just curious what you guys think. Kolibri is one of a very small handful of 32x games that I've been interested in. I was never much into Virtua Fighter, and the 32x version doesn't look that great, so VF is out. I also would eventually get Knuckles Chaotix if I had a 32x, but I know how controversial that game is.

So really that leaves Kolibri as the one game I'm most interested in. Is it worth getting the add-on for? There's a full 32x set-up for $80, with 3 games... Is that really a good price? (Not that familiar with 32x pricing.)

I love the Ecco games (and I'm a graphics-whore), so I assume I'd also love Kolibri, but I expect it's the only game I'd really like...

If your interested in only a couple games emulate them. The hard on you have now will be gone almost instantly after you buy the 32x and play it for a couple hours. Then you will just be looking to sell it yourself.

I guess if money/space are not a big deal go for it

Well, I've found things to enjoy from Shadow Squadron and Star Wars.

I'm one of the Chaotix likers. Blackthorne is also a great game and while Doom has it's faults it is a good play.

Anyway, I recently got a CIB 32x for about $30-35 which replace my decimated old one. So unless those games are some of the better and/or rarer ones, $80 sounds a little steep. What games are coming with it? Lots of the lesser ones can be found for $5 or less depending on the cart.

Although I never expected much out of Kolibri as a game, I was still disappointed. It still looks nice though. If you're a huge Ecco fan, then it would be worth it.

Well I am a huge Ecco fan, so I think I would like Kolibri...

I personally don't think that the 32x is worth it for Kolibri. But I do think it is worth it for Virtua Racing, Star Wars Arcade, Space Harrier, After Burner, and Virtua Fighter. And I do like Mother Base 2000, Shadow Squadron, BC Racers, and Tempo. And Knuckles Chaotix may have a learning curve, but can be enjoyable. Those games make it worth having, for me.

I must reiterate that Blackthorne is a truly excellent game.

FFCD did not disappoint but Sonic CD did and 90% of the other games on the add-on don't interest me at all. What's left an empty feeling of trying to convince yourself to like games you don't in a way to justify the purchase. Anyways sold my Sega CD, I still own CIB copies of the U.S. and Jap versions of FFCD for collection purposes (FF is possibly my favorite gaming series)
Now I play FFCD on Kega when I get the itch works fine for me (also the Jap version of Sonic CD)

One note: Sonic CD has kind of grown on me a little (The Jap soundtrack has made a big difference I like it a lot more) I am serious when I say the boss music in the U.S. version ruins the game for me.

Well I agree about the Sonic CD soundtrack; the US track ruins it for me, especially the title song "Sonic Boom!" That's the song of crushed dreams, for those who thought Sonic CD would be awesome. Thankfully the JP track really makes the whole game much better overall.

As for the Sega CD, I also wanted one since they came out in the 90's, but only got one a couple years ago. However I love my Sega CD. :cool: Final Fight CD is great too. There are many good games for Sega CD, but they're buried under the bad games, FMV ones especially (though there are even a few good FMV's)...

The 32x is a different question though. The game list is so small, and most games don't pull me in. I never liked Virtua Fighter much, so if I bought a 32x, Kolibri's the only one I'm real interested in, starting out. Knuckles too, though I expect a very mixed bag for that one.

A few other titles look possibly good to me, such as Afterburner, Space Harrier, and others that folks mentioned. But Kolibri is the one game I'm started out wanting...

I agree, the $80 was expensive. Put of curiosity, what games were included?

I played Kolibri for the first time last week. The game is beautiful, and pretty fun, but I don't think it would be worth it to by the system just for that game. There are plenty of other games that make it worth it, however.

These games have shot up in price lately. I rememeber a long time ago when every sinlge 32X game save for Spiderman didnt cost an arm and a leg.

I find 32X games have been expensive for quite some time now. I think the time to buy 32X games was early last decade (2000s) and any time before that.

32x is ok, I'm not saying its great. But I am a Virtual Fighter fan so that plus Kolibri, Knuckle C, Star Wars, and Doom to an extent are great on it. I also agree with Guntz that the time to buy was around the time the Saturn was going down and the Dreamcast was picking up. Now a days some of these games are at stupid prices.

Eh, it's not that bad. The only really expensive games are World Series Baseball, Spiderman and Blackthorne. Everything else can be had cart-only for less than $20.

It's up to you and how much you like that game, of course, but if you can play a few more games on it, then it may make it worthwhile. I'm with these guys...the arcade ports are super fun and it's just a cool thing to own. A must if you're a Genesis collector, IMO. I also bought an Everdrive, so it was a no brainer for me :-)

Well I got a homebrew Neptune just for 5 32x games, but I might be insane, lol. Kolibri is a great game though. If you enjoyed the Ecco series then you'll most likely enjoy this one as well.

It really depends on how munch into collecting you are. If you like to own the physical copies of games, than I say go for it and buy a 32x. If you just want to play the games, than maybe go for emulation.

You want to hear something funny? I played Ecco when it was new at my nephew's house and didn't like it, never touched the series again. Now I play Kolibri, and hear "If you like Ecco you'll like this." Well, I like Kolibri, maybe I need to give Ecco another chance!

I played Kolibri yesterday but what do u have to do really?

Basically you fly around killing the bees/ants/wasps etc so your fellow hummingbirds can get nectar or whatever from the flowers.

If you are at the very beginning (and you can't shoot yet) what you need to do is find the one flower that doesn't have bees or other birds near it and put your beak near the flower, it will trigger a story sequence and the game will actually begin. It took me a few minutes to figure that out.

Though it does help to know that Kolibri is arguably the finest hummingbird-based shooter for the 32X.

Well, with Kolibri included, the $80 may've been worth it. I don't know the going price for that, but I'd imagine it's a bit high.

^ This. Kolibri is one of those games like Chaotix. Some like it, some hate it. I really enjoy Kolibri. As others have said, if you're a fan of the Ecco series you should enjoy it. It also has pretty good music. In fact, I recorded the whole soundtrack and posted it here on Sega-16 in the 32X Music Appreciation Thread. :D

In the NTSC realm, don't forget about Pitfall the Mayan Adventure. Not only rare, but can be rather expensive since many collector's are usually looking to complete their 32x collection with Pitfall or one of the above.

As far as Kolibri, I assume hardcore Ecco fans could play through and beat the game in no time. However, I am not one of the hardcore Ecco fans. I had to use a walk-through since one puzzle in particular proved to be far too much for my tiny brain. The graphics are beautiful and the ambient music is nothing short of spectacular. I usually play on a crappy CRT for both video and sound, but for this game I decided to hook up my computer speakers half-way through (just a 5.1 set up with a subwoofer) HOLY CRAP the music in this game is awesome when enjoyed with some good speakers. That could be said for a lot of games, but I just remember being blown away by sound when I was playing Kolibri. :D Kolibri is definitely "Worth Buying"

Must haves for the 32x for me would be Blackthorne and Zaxxon Motherbase 2000 - A-M-A-Z-I-N-G gameplay experiences for me there, though picking up Doom and Virtua Racing is also recommended.

BITD I used to get somewhat lost/confused with this game. But after spending some time with it I figured everything out. In fact, I don't think I have ever beat this game. I do know I have gotten to the last level a couple times.

Depends on how much of a nerd you are. If you are one (like me) then get it. It's a nice game that feels unique, I haven't got past the third level yet and haven't picked it up for a while (or any other game for that matter, I'm just coming out of a reading phase and going into a music phase, then probably movies and TV, then games after that!) but it's on the radar.

I would say get it, the 32X just looks good on the top your MegaDrive, especially if you have a MegaCD too, it looks like it could take off and fight a star destroyer or something. Virtua Fighter is pretty good on there too, I prefer it to the Saturn version, which isn't quite as smooth. Kolibri is worth a look, I would say. If you have the cash go for it.

$80 for a 32x in clean shape/working with all the proper cables is a great deal alone. With 3 games added in the mix, you're getting a solid deal imo. My 32x library is less than 10, and it was well worth it for those few games. It's definitely a niche system.

Any more than $80 and it should come with a box as well imo.

I'm guessing you picked your 32X up around the same time I did then, early 2000's? When I got mine, it was boxed and brand new for $25 off eBay. The guy had a ton of them and I got a great deal on that and almost all the 32X CD games, I mainly got it because I wanted to play me some Corpse Killer, but I still have a sealed copy of Night Trap 32X sitting around somewhere.

I wouldn't say the 32X is worth it for Kolibri alone. But what I will say is that it is worth it for Knuckles' Chaotix alone. Still my favorite Sonic game.

Comparing a purchase from a decade ago to today is
