Nice episode.
There actually was a second Scud game, for the PC. It's pretty obscure. Never played it but it looks similar to Loaded.

Nice episode.
There actually was a second Scud game, for the PC. It's pretty obscure. Never played it but it looks similar to Loaded.
I had Keith Courage on my TG-16, around a year or so before I got a Genesis, and I enjoyed it well enough. The human levels seemed a bit unpolished control-wise, but the robotic suit levels were fun and the music and sound effects were wonderful. The only games that I had at the time to compare to were R-Type, Vigilante and Space Harrier, but I did rent some TG-16 games later on. While I would rather play other pack-in games such as Super Mario Bros., Sonic the Hedgehog or Bonk's Adventure, Keith Courage didn't seem terrible.
Socket - This game is fun, but very short and easy; I liked it... and then it was over minutes later.
Billy Hatcher - Good game, but somehow I've never stuck with it, I think I'm still only in world two even though I got the game many years back. I really should play it again, what I've played is good. I wonder if this game started out on the GC or DC... probably GC, but it still kind of looks like a Dreamcast game. Good game though for sure, and somewhat original thanks to the egg.
Croc - I love Croc, it's my favorite 3d platformer on the PS1! Great game. Depth perception problems are definitely the games' biggest issue, but it's a great game anyway; you do eventually get used to it. (As for warping, play the PC version if you want the best port.)
Croc 2 - Croc 2 is improved over the original, but somehow I like the first one more... still, it's a good game. Again this is better on PC, but the PS1 version is okay, PS1 graphical issues aside. Depth perception issues are improved for sure.
Chibi-Robo - I agree with them here, this game is boring and not very fun.
Buck Bumble - This game has good gameplay, and it's great to have because the N64 doesn't have very many flight combat games, but the graphics are definitely disappointing; the fog is way too close, and even what you can see is bland. Thanks to the graphics this game doesn't make a good first impression, but it's decent enough to be worth sticking with.
Vectorman - Vectorman is awesome, it deserved a better review than they gave it! Vectorman has always been one of my favorite late Genesis games. Fantastic game.
Vectorman 2 - The second game isn't quite as good as the first, but it's still great. I don't like the swamp you start out in, such a bland background...
Punky Skunk - This is a good platformer, but man does it look like a SNES game... not exactly pushing the PS1 at all here. Beyond that though, it's classic platforming fun.
Keith Courage - Yeah, this is a reasonably good game. Good music, okay graphics, fun gameplay... I like it. It's much better than the Genesis's first packin, Altered Beast, for sure. The grinding in the overworld gets tedious sometimes, and it is occasionally frustrating, so it's not a great game for sure, but it's alright.
Scud - Man is this game boring... I hope it's better with the light gun, which I don't have, but as a run & gun... those repetitive backgrounds get old, FAST. And I hate the maze levels like level two! Everything looks the same... the 2d graphics are decently well drawn, but there's no variety. Scud is okay, but could have been much better.
Captain Commando - The only game in this video I don't have! I've actually never played this one.
It's not exactly Loaded, the levels are much smaller than that game and there is a bit more thinking required... PC Scud is definitely better than the Saturn game. It's not great either, but it's not nearly as tediously dull as the Saturn game gets.
LOL, "Phonix The Hedgehog"
hey you guys forgot some stuff
for real though, poor chibi robo deserved better! also Joe, don't know if you read many comics but Scud is a pretty short series, all of it's in one trade & if you're ever in the mood for really crazy 90-s non-sequitur stuff, it's a fun read. good ep overall.
Of all the games covered in this episode, Captain Commando is a favorite. The SNES one I've mentioned on these boards before with others about it being censored and having to be toned down a ton due to console restrictions of that time, the one thing that gets me is it runs a bit slower than the original arcade game. These days the SNES versions pricey, but nothing compared to that PS1 version Dave mentioned, which is priced on the insane side. The arcade version is pretty fun with 3 other players, the SNES one is a 2 man affair, the PS1 version is 3 player, but with a code can be up to 4, as well as the version running on Capcom Classics Collection Volume 2 on the PS2 can be run with up to 4 players.
Captain Commando really showed how the SNES lacked the colors to be able to look more similar to the arcade. It was REALLY dark in comparison. Kind of like a Genesis version of a game that's multiplatform, but maybe even more so.
yeah, i kinda wanted it for my generic beat-em-up collection but the price these days is also too high for the quality of the port, as well. it was great seeing the poster design of the googly-eyed original version too, haha.
LMAO at the ending to this Playstation episode! I laughed very hard at it :D

Incredible Episode. I still have my launch PlayStation. I actually learned quite a bit from this episode. I had no Idea Aludra was made from some of the same guys who did Landstalker on the Genesis. And The Adventures of Lomax was a pleasant surprise. Ill have to get both games someday soon. Thanks Joe and Dave for an informative and well made episode. You guys rock!
Really glad to see Gradius Gaiden got covered, the first ever import game I bought many years after the system had already been done (during the PS2 era) with it's life cycle. Probably the best Gradius game IMO (I don't care for Gradius V, but do like Gradius IV oddly enough) that I have played. Didn't exactly pay cheap for it, but preferred this first print run copy over a later Books re-release.
Great episode! You guys do a nice job of covering the familiar favorites as well as some of the more obscure titles. Out of curiosity, have either of you played the PS1 Test Drive 4? It was my favorite game in the late 90's (on PC) though these days, it doesn't seem particularly remarkable...except for the music. Still have some of the tracks on my playlist today. :D

Great episode, Joe!
Several non-standard choices helped to build a pretty good selection of games, with lots of variety.
I liked how you balanced it with games using 2D graphics, 'cause some people nowadays seem to think that the PS1 is a 2D-disabled console or something like that.
And thanks a lot for not bringing up Tekken and Gran Turismo series, which have already been hyped and superficially reviewed as the holy grails of the PS1 to no end.
I'd have left Blasto out, for sure, 'cause that game is beyond generic and uninteresting.
Alundra is one of the best games of the generation, it kinda sucks the PS1 got that and the Saturn got Dark Savior... Dark Savior has better graphics but Alundra is a better game.
Ghost in the shell is an awesome game. I remember Gamefan loving it back in the day, and I've had a loose copy I got from gamestop for years.
@Kamahl: I prefer Alundra's hand drawn graphics over Dark Savior's, but I will say that I wish they hadn't been so dark. Alundra has a very moody tone to me.
