I like Vapor Trail more though, both as a 2 player and a game in general, and for the art, music (especially), and gameplay style. (I like the 3 hit mechanics especially)
Both games are much better played 2 player . . . though I think a lot of games would be more fun with multiplayer options. (Silpheed comes to mind on the topic of overhead shooters ;))
