I really enjoyed this episode. Good work, guys. Oh, and I had no idea you were on Facebook (mainly because I barely touch my own account as it is). So while officially I'm the 54th person to "like" Game Sack, in undocumented reality I was probably in the early twenties.
Not a fan of those "Let's Play" YT videos at all but this was watchable. I'd say go ahead and do more of these but don't do them too regularly.
Hmm, in response to your comment made in the video, it seems that the direct translated name of the game is "Team Guren Welkin". Guren is a Japanese term for a crimson colored lotus, and welkin is an archaic English word for sky/heavens/upper air. So, in its most simplistic form, the name of the game is "Team Crimson Sky"... or something to that effect.
That was fun.
I prefer the typical game sack format. I still liked the video, but wish I heard some of the game music or game sounds from time to time.
I don't intend for this to sound harsh, but these types of videos are just... uninteresting. It's not the fault of Joe and Dave, it's simply the nature of "Let's Play" videos. I don't want to hear conversations, I want to hear the game, especially if it's one I haven't played before. And since we've already got enough people making these things for all kinds of systems, I don't see a need for Game Sack to add even more to the pile.
If "Let's Play" was rarely done by anyone, it would be one thing. But given the number of hits you get on YouTube when typing in that short phrase, there's enough of it already out there. Stick to what made you two world famous-ish ;)
Yep. "Let's Play" is a boring format.
This episode is boring compared to the others. Please, go back to your Academy Award-winning formula.

Thanks for the feedback, guys. Keep it coming! I had some misgivings about doing the episode, but you never know unless you try. So far the general consensus is "Sure, do more but don't do 'em often and do it only on little-seen games". I think what we'll end up doing is only doing it on little-known games that need to be the focus of an entire episode like this and we'll make it a point to shut up from time to time and raise the game volume.
The games are recorded in SD. They are automatically upscaled when inserted into the 1080p timeline. This method is superior because of several reasons. First and foremost is file size. I have plenty of space, but I still get jittery when recording a ton of HD gameplay. Also, the upscaling is not done in real time so no compromises have to be made. I also have more control over the scaling. I scale game images to their nearest border so we don't have to see a black (or other color) border around the entire game. If a visible border exists on the sides, I crop those off. NES games ALWAYS have a single white line on the left-most part of the screen for whatever reason and Genesis as well as SMS games often have very ugly (and distracting) colored borders. Hmm, I always have to preprocess gameplay videos to crop them, I haven't thought about scaling them to crop them before. I have fooled around with 720p video in Premiere Pro CS3 about twice and since I had to manually scale every clip(or, at least that is all I figured out) I have been sticking to 480p videos. Premiere Pro seems to just stick the clip in the center of the HD video without scaling unless I do it manually, though there might be a setting I don't know about. I need to try a 1080p video when I get my new processor in (hopefully it works this time) to see if the HTPC can handle that. My laptop is obviously not able to handle even 480p videos with too many effects (especially 3D) even though it is an Intel Dual Core system.

So far, the only episodes you've done that I've found boring were the controller episodes and the FPS one. I particularly enjoyed this one because of the casual banter between you and Dave. You guys did that a little bit during the Adventure Island episode and I thought it worked really well, so I was glad to see it return on a larger scale.Quote:

I really liked the episode and wouldn't mind more of them. I guess my rock is pretty secure over my head; I hadn't even heard of "Let's Play" videos before watching this one, so I don't have the same negative perception that everyone else seems to have.
MrMatthews, some episodes may take upwards of 20 hours but it definitely varies. The Let's Play Soukyugurentai one took up less than two hours of my time, start to finish. I barely even feel like I worked on that episode. I work from home as a video editor so I am able to set my own hours and stop when I want and work on Game Sack as I please (for the most part). Usually recording the gameplay footage and editing the voiceovers are the most arduous tasks. After that it flows pretty quickly. Once everything is in place I watch it a few times and tweak things here and there. Right now I am editing next week's episode (likely released this coming Friday) and I have two more games to edit. The other 8 are done. After that I need to shoot the cartridge insert scene for my segment and then pick or create music. I am also waiting for some original music from Brian who does our title music. Then I review a few more times to make sure I didn't miss something stupid, export, compress to an 11.5 mbps MP4 and then wait until release day to upload. Fun!
I didn't really like this episode much. But I will say that Joe has the correct pronunciation of "Gandalf".
This episode was good, I enjoyed the banter and it felt like playing with friends since Dave obviously wan't that good at the game It felt natural, and nto like watching some superplay video or something. One thing is that I think it went on a bit long for one game, it might work better as smaller chunks. Maybe not use the gameplay vids as the main episode (unless you are just short on time and need some filler) but maybe do something a bit quicker like 5 or 10 minute side episode sometime. You could call it Game Sack Gaiden!
