Behold, the TurboGrafx-16... the system you should love:
Ok now this is probably the first Game Sack video I feel like I need to criticize. You did not make enough emphasis on how the japanese library is so much bigger than the US library (You should have mentioned Spriggan, LoX 2 and Kaze Kiri at least).
No mention of Bonk or Air Zonk (it's the system "mascot"!)
No epic lulz from Ai Cho Aniki and Last Alert.
You should also have mentioned the single controller port.
This video did not reach it's full potential
I actually played through this game completely for review.
Kamahl, the video is already 14 minutes long. There is a 15 minute limit on Youtube. Perhaps you missed the part at the end where we said that there is just too much to talk about in one episode. Or the part in the middle where I say there is just no way to cover all of the good games. What YOU feel is important isn't what others would feel is important, that part is subjective. But we DID suggest that people go the Japanese route. Bonk is average at best and not limited to the Turbo. Air Zonk was featured both graphically and by name at the end, though that game isn't tremendously special, I don't feel (worth a try, though). So to anybody saying that we should have mentioned THIS or THAT... sorry, but we can't mention everything. There is no way we could have mentioned everybody's favorites, only a small handful of our own. And Spriggan was mentioned in the credits. Kaze Kiri sucks. Also, we didn't want to cover everything that has already been covered a billion times before (like Bonk). I actually did capture footage from Bonk 1, 2 and Bomberman to include in the Gate of Thunder sequence, but cut it for time.
You mentioned 3 YS games, that could have been shortened to the "YS Series". Plenty of things in the video could have been shortened and better organized to fit more info.
I'm fully aware those would have been MY priorities and not yours, but as a fan I have to say my opinion don't I?
The video was pretty much this:
"The turbografx is awesome"
"Hucards vs Turbochips" (yes, everyone hates the name turbochip)
"You need a converter to play japanese games"
"It had CD games"
"Duo"
"Here's a good game"
"Here's a good game"
"Here's a good game"
"Here's a good game"
"Here's a good game"
"Here's a good game"
"Here's a good game"
"Here's a good game"
"Here's a good game"
"Here's a good game"
"Here's a good game"
"The turbografx is awesome"
You lacked time because time wasn't managed at all.
Still, mentioning your favorite games is a bit of your style, so I can't criticize you too much for that.
You forgot a bunch of stuff there.
But we didn't need to mention about the one controller port or that the Japanese had a bigger library. That really is irrelevant to the video. I even wrote a bunch of things we were to discuss like why it didn't sell well in the US and how much more popular it was in Japan compared to the Mega Drive and even the SNES. I do suppose I could have thrown in a vocal mention of the PC Engine being more popular in Japan. But like I said, it was never intended it to be an end-all be-all of all things Turbo. For whatever reason, you expect it to be. All it is intended to do is give people some general information and hopefully they are interested enough to take a further look.
EDIT: You haven't replied yet, but I also did want to mention that if I condensed Ys 1, 2, 3 and 4 into an "Ys series", it would likely run just as long at that segment. I really don't feel any time was wasted because the system is really all about the games (every system is).
Jeez you really take criticism harshly don't you?
If your goal was just to give some general information, you've succeeded.
However that's not the reason I've watched your videos so far.
They were either:
1. Funny without any of that really bad forced humor common in videos like this
2. Highly informative
This video was neither.
Dave could have at least made a little "Well it's not nearly as awesome as the SNES", and you bashing him for it... Not even that!
Am I not allowed to defend the show? I don't see how I'm taking it harshly, just responding to your points from my point of view. I'm sorry you didn't enjoy the episode. Please feel free to make one that remedies all of our omissions. I think that no matter what I say, you'll find a reason to complain about it and no matter what you say, I'll find a reason to defend it. So basically we're both wasting our time now.
Now that we've discovered this truth, we need to actively not post online ever again.
Great vid guys!
My TG-16 is probably the smallest console collection I have, but Military Madness was one of my favorites from that generation.
I only have about 8 titles for the TG-16 and had planned on picking up more games, but just never got around to doing so. The local Microplay always had a small selection of titles, but sadly they are no longer around. I was fortunate enough to get the Turbo-Booster, that enabled the TG-16 to have composite video output and stereo sound.
Great Video Joe :ok: glad to see the Turbo getting some well deserved attention :)
Ug... the boosters. The TG-16 was huge in comparison to the PCE, they should have had the A/V out built in. Sadly, NEC knew nothing about videogame system marketing and could not even see that they were making a blunder. It worked in Japan several years prior, so why change what worked?Quote:

I remember seeing the $400 price tag for the Turbo-CD and then thinking there's no way I'm paying that much to play Sherlock Holmes: Consulting Detective and an Amiga port of It Came from the Desert. Then along comes the Turbo-Duo and I see Gates of Thunder. My initial response was why would I pay that much for a Genesis like shooter, with better sound? I might have been more excited about the Turbo-Duo, if I'd known just how much potential the system really had.
The TV Sports games were pretty much useless no matter what.Quote:

A 9.9 rating!
It's much deserved.
Awesome video Joe, I learned quite a bit about a system I knew very little about. I remember back in the day, my friend bought one, and told me "Yeah it's only 8-bit and you have to buy an add-on to make it 16 bit, I'm taking it back to the store and getting a Sega CD for my Genesis" So now you have just put Turbo-Duo at the top of my want list! Thanks!
I chose between my TG16 and a Sega CD back in the day as well. There was no way I could afford a Sega CD or a Turbo CD without selling something, and at that point I only owned a Genesis and TurboGrafx. I'm glad I did what I did, but I wish I would have bought a Turbo DUO back in the day as well, but then I probably never would have graduated high school. ;)
With TurboDuo prices the way they are, you're gonna have to sell a lot of labels to get one... :) I've wanted one the better part of last year and this year, and I can't seem to find one that goes under the 150.00 mark (and those ones have a broken hucard cover). Good luck!
The Japanese systems are the ones I usually find; they're about the same price. I have a guy here on CL selling his US system for 300.00, and he's firm on the price (believe me, I tried).
This time we take a quick look at Star Odyssey and have another random battle. Which two games are pitted against each other this time?
Hahahaha, man I love the random battles, this one was even better.
Excellent episode.
I've been watching Game Sack for a little while Joe, but I didn't immediately recognize you until I made the connection with your Sega video. Really like what you have produced so far, it seems to me like a much more competent version on Classic Game Room (competent meaning you actually go over things in detail, rather than a brief, often opinioneless glance.) You do some neat things with editing in order to spice the videos up rather than simply letting them be straight up, simplistic reviews, and they really give Game Sack a unique style compared to other YouTube efforts and the like. In short, lots of fun to be had, and Game Sack has quickly risen to be one of my favorite game related shows out there, surpassing the bizarrely focus-challenged newer rendition of CGR, and giving me a reason again to watch something other than poorly done Let's Plays.
I guess I should have also mentioned I find the subtly written humor really well done and does not hit you over the head constantly like some other review shows.
Hahaahaha, this was awesome :D
R-Type I like more than Axelay, aliens are always better than machiniery
Great video. I would have loved to see Axelay vs Thunder Force IV. I was expecting her to pull that out instead of R-Type. That would have been awesome.
That would have been awesome indeed!
Latest episode:
Saw this episode this morning. This is becoming one of my favorite shows to watch on TY. Thanks for the hard work! :)
Grand Papa! Lmao
That goes to show how Sega didn't miss out on Final Fight. I didn't know they downported it so heavily on the SNES. And, man, does Streets of Rage (1 & 2) have awesome music.
Great episode as always, Joe! There's only one tiny little exception that I took with it, and that is the claim that SoR 2's soundtrack is better than that of the first game. I love them both, and they are among my favorite soundtracks period, but I think that the first one slightly edges out the second in that category. And considering that for this episodes soundtrack you used 3 tracks from the first game and only one from the second, I think you secretly agree with me!
Anyway, keep up the great work!
This is my favorite episode so far. I didn't realize that the Sega CD port of FF1 looked so much better than the SNES version. The Sega one looks smooth and colorful while the other one looks very blocky, dark, and gritty. I have to say that Game Sack is shaping up to be a better show than CGR, which is going downhill at lightspeed.
Thanks for the compliments, guys.
I can understand that. I'm probably stepping on a lot of toes with that comment. But to me SoR 2 had higher quality drums and a larger quantity of kick-ass tunes. Like I said, that doesn't mean the first game's soundtrack isn't very good... it's AWESOME (and more appropriate for the segments in Game Sack). One thing that bothers me about the SoR 1 music is the boss theme. I love it to death, the that voice that keeps happening during the track sounds awful. If only that were a higher quality sample or replaced with something else. Oh, Streets of Rage 1, why couldn't you have been 8 MEGA POWER?Quote:

Oddly enough, the SNES game was poorly optimized color wise, but the Sega CD game was designed for the target Composite output and looks rather banded over straight emulation.
Over Composite I'd say the Sega CD game looks better, but it always played better.

Better quality video is available here, for great scrutiny!
Oh man, the Sega CD game looks LEAGUES better than the SNES Final Fight. Everything about it is much more accurate compared to the arcade.
