Personally, I'd like to see something like a cross between Sonic 3D GEN's and Sonic 3; graphicly Sonic 3, but more played out like an assault course ala the S3D one.
TBh, I'll be happy with whatever it is as long as it isn't Sonic 1-style; Sonic 4's special stages were a nightmare to complete!
There is no indication that the console version has special stages. I would not expect it at all.

A shame we're only getting the bad future, but the fact it's in at all gives slight hope for a DLC Stardust Speedway zone.
Anyone seen the new trailer? Pretty epic! And it looks like Sonic 2's Egg Mech is the Death Egg boss; even though he was in Sonic 4.
Hoping the battle is a two-parter; kick it's ass in the base itself, then the walls fall back and you have to face it's bigger incarnation from S&K! Please Sega, do that! :)
Playing off of nostalgia to sell terrible games is a fairly popular fad these days.
I'm hoping the S2 Egg Mech is just one of the bosses out of a Multi-Boss Battle. Ex: S2 Egg Mech leading up to S3&K's Doomsday Zone battle. That would make for a great final level.
I hope the Silver the Hedgehog boss battle in the Sonic 06 level has eleven parts!
Seems tails is going to make an appearance.
