I'm guessing you haven't tried the 'Wisp missions yet, have you? That stage is such a clusterfuck.

I agree the wisp stage is the worst one and is a real pain at first. Once I played it a few times, you get use to it and it gets easier.
I don't mind Planet Wisp that much. It's a really nice level, and it's much more straightforward than Seaside (less bottomless pits too). The only problem I have with it is that it's just too goddamn long for a Sonic level. It looks like they put 2 levels together - the forest part and the factory part, and the whole thing just takes too long to get through. I didn't mind the challenges in this one, the only one I haven't completed yet is the 2D doppelganger race. I just can't stay interested for long enough to finish it, and that gear puzzle in the middle of the level really ruins the race. The other challenges were quite enjoyable though.
This game has the best last boss ever in a video game.
Yeah, we know; Time Eater was bull. I'm just grateful I S ranked it first time...
When I did it the boss went outside the tube for a few minutes, then at one point I started boosting backwards. Eek!
Does anyone (who has bought the retail PC version) know if it comes with Steamworks? I really hope not.
Thanks in advance.
I think it does, but the patch floating around the internet can negate it.
If there is one thing I dislike about Generations, it's the lack of proper Robotnik battles. I know it's an aniversary game and it's got 20 years to cover, but why just 2 fights with the Doc? Really hope, if they do do DLC, we'll get a few; personally, I'd like to see his Angel Island machine and the Metropolis one recreated.
I really like the game, but gamepad lag makes the classic stages less fun to play.
Because I felt my masculinity challenged by this statement I managed to snag an Athlon X2 6400+ today for $64. Since I can sell the 4200+ for at least $50 I think that's a good move. The jump from 1MB to 2MB of L2 cache alone aught to eliminate any bottlenecks this system has, if the jump from 2.2Ghz to 3.2 Ghz doesn't do that already.
We will see if this horribly optimized mess that is Sonic Generations sees any improvements. I honestly am not ready to move on to quad core or above systems just yet, I might have to wait until Windows 8 or some must have PC game requires it.
Sweet. I look forward to hearing how it turns out.
If it actually works when it comes in this will be my first successful CPU upgrade in over twelve years. My last two attempts failed miserably, but those systems were much older and I was hoping they could go higher than they actually could.
I agree about the hedgehog stages in SU being better than the modern levels in Generations, but I don't see how you can say the classic levels are better than S3&K. The classic levels had disappointing and annoying physics (and this comes from a guy who didn't mind Sonic 4's physics), and were about as unfun as SU's Werehog levels to me. The modern stages were like ten times more fun.
I also don't see how you can say that Sonic CD is better than S3&K. Sonic CD is... well, I'll not say that it's the most overrated Sonic game, as that title goes to Sonic 2 (in which only 3 of its 10-11 Zones are speedy, with the rest of them being slow and boring as fuck, which is pathetic for a Sonic game) and Sonic Adventure 2 (with its high number of non-Sonic/Shadow stages)... but it's pretty damn overrated, with its poor physics, bizarre level design, slow pace, and short and unoriginal stages (nearly all of them are rehashes of Sonic 1 stages).
...Sonic CD is built directly off of Sonic 1, just like all the other sonic games. It has the same physics. If you think Sonic CD has poor physics, you think all the sonic games have poor physics.
I agree with you about Sonic 2, and SA2...
But if you try to speed run SG's classic levels, you'll see they're well designed, and despite the physics not being 100% accurate to the originals, they're close enough to make it an extremely enjoyable experience.
Sonic CD is the fastest 2D Sonic ever.

Just watch the videos here (and apart from Palmtree Panic, they're played at 5/6th's the speed of the game, so if you can, manually speed them up so they play as fast as they should) and you'll see that Sonic CD was the most well designed and fast 2D Sonic period.
I realize CC1 is missing...here it is http://www.gdward.plus.com/site/avi/scd-cc1.avi
Whoever did those speedruns used some ingenious exploits; jumping mid-way through the half-pipe at the begining of Palmtree Panic Act 2 is something I've never thought of doing before. The PP Act 3 speedrun is sorta the same as what I do; though after clearing that small gap, I use the Figure 8, not the red spring.
The Sonic CD spindash certainly sucks at least. So I start rolling in one spot but if I let go of the button 1 millisecond too soon I stay put? Makes sense.
The only thing that really irks me about Sonic Generations is Super Sonic. He doesn't run any faster or jump any higher than regular Sonic and instead of getting cool invincibility music all you get is an annoying buzzing noise. Seriously WTF is up with that stupid buzzing noise. Other than that I still love the game.
Buzzing noise? I don't remember that, but tbh, I didn't play much as SS; far too broken for my liking.
Yeah it's like a buzzing/pop fizzing noise. I think it's supposed to signify the sound of the raw jawsum energy that he's emitting, but it's just annoying and really interferes with the kickass level music.
Too bad the S2 Spin Dash doesn't allow you to fully charge it, though.
What are you talking about? The way the Sonic 2 spin dash works is that each rev adds to a potential velocity, which I'll call V.
V begins at 0 the moment you hit down, and each time you press a button, 2 is added to V up until 8. V decreases by the cycle at a rate of (( V/0.125 )/ 256) which is logarithmic, meaning the higher V is, the faster it'll decrease.
When you release your spindash, your speed = 8+(floor(v)/ 2).
So... how does it not get fully charged?
Is he talking about Sonic CD's Sonic 2 spindash? I dunno.
Super Peel Out is over powered though. It's like Sonic Generations' Spin Dash. Good shit.
I'm pretty sure it takes more revs to get a full-power spin dash in this version of Sonic CD. I'm used doing 6 and then blasting off, but 6 revs in this version doesn't get you going very fast; it seems like I have to do about 9 (a guess based on the way I spin dash by pianoing across the buttons in multiples of 3). I'm positive that it's different when compared to S3&K, at the very least.
It's so apropos for Sonic CD that even with the better spin dash, the peel out is always the better option.
Maybe it gives you the same speed, but you can't rev it like the classic games; it's missing some frames & sound effects. I know I haven't worded this right, but if you play Sonic 2 and then this version of Sonic CD, you'll know what I'm talking about. It's not an issue, just something I noticed.
Dude, if I'm hearing that the Super Peel Out is still faster, and still charges the fastest, I'm overjoyed.
I was seriously fucking worried about having to do all my speed runs again, or being forced to buy the 360/PS3/PC version of Sonic CD just to do that.
If the Super Peel Out is still the best by far, then thankfully I won't have to do that, and all speed run strategies remain the same.
Super Peel Out sounds like a fun game. What is it on? Atari 2600, SNES, FM Towns Marty...?
Are we running out of creativity Kogen???
My time of 00:28:01 for Palmtree Panic Zone 1 has placed me in the top 100 leaderboard, at 84th place :p. If I can master that trick Pimp posted in that video a page back and time my jump before the red spring at the end, I might be able to shave off a couple of secs off that time. EDIT: Well I'm proud of me even if that time isn't anything special! :D
Sorry if this a bump of a slightly old thread, but I have to vent some Steam(R) - pun intended.
So basically I bought the retail version of Sonic Generations, a version which is only apparantly availble in the EU. It was in the sale for £10, bargain I thought, a little cheaper than what I'd seen of the Steam version. I thought I would also be able to avoid having to wait a day for the title to download on my shitty 256KB max speed connection.
Well basically the DVD is just a bloody splash screen, it then sends you to Steam to download the bloody thing! I now have to wait 5 hours to play it!
FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
Edit: Am I doing it wrong? Is there an alternate option I missed or rushed past? I've checked inside the DVD through windows explorer and there does appear to be some large game related files inside. What an absoloute joke.
Thanks to the VG Music Appreciation thread I was listening to playlists of Sonic games on Youtube and stumbled on this beauty:

I haven't hardly played Sonic Generations though, is there a Sonic R level tucked in there somewhere or is this just a fanfare remix? Either way, it makes me want to actually play the game now.
It's used for a side mission where you have to race Knuckles through Green Hill. I don't think you unlock it either, it's one of the few tracks that are exclusive to select missions and that's it. It was also released on the official OST.
If you're playing the PC version, you could hack it in I guess (no idea how but it can be done).
And there's the free Unleashed mod minus the awful werethong stages.
Oh yeah, I forgot about that too. I liked the daytime levels in Unleashed on 360, the ones I've played anyway.
