Name one game that you objectively consider the best game ever. Not your favorite game (because tastes usually change). And not some classic that aged bad but was groundbreaking 30 years ago either.
Just the game that should be #1 in the hall of fame in your opinion.
My personal favorite is NiGHTS into Dreams... for the Sega Saturn.
An work art all-ways around, combining an extremely interesting idea, extremely good graphics, and some of the best music I've heard in a video game ever, hands-down. The gameplay is simple, yet complex, yet addictive. And relaxing as well, rarely does the game get frustrating. And yet you can't put it down. The levels are easy to beat, but to master them takes practice! You can fight against your own high scores, and even after playing it multiple times I still can't figure out how to get 2.0 on the Boss Battles. Very clever design. I played it for a good 5-6 months solid at least, the levels have such great replay value. The story lacks depth, but makes up for it in creativity. And between the Pians, and the unlockables in Christmas NiGHTS, and the whole atmosphere, you can't help but come back to it at least once in a while.
This game really struck a chord with me, I can't really explain how or why. I just love everything about it, and still think hands-down it's Sonic Team's best work. Definitely the only game I can really give a perfect ten score to. It's practically flawless in my opinion.
I'd vote it into the video game hall of fame.
Nice to have another from you. It is Mario 3. Over and above all because it's so light to pick up: free level paths without being cheapened by savepoints, more equipment than one needs to use without its being able to ruin the game (as mass inventories do in rpgs), decent 2 player options, and a host of unique points within the game--such as the flock of svelte flying turtles in the latter half of World 5. These are what make it better than Chameleon Kid, which is a battle, like playing a hard piece of music where one must get everything right every single time and each misstep unhinges the next. Phantasy Star II is like nothing else, but being an rpg with only 4 saveslots it doesn't just pick up and play. And every 16 bit Sonic is too short by half, at least.
Very tough question. My heart goes with Shinobi III: Return Of the Ninja Master, but I know the game has a few glaring flaws. Street Fighter II, Pac Man, Super Mario Bros 1&3, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Starcraft, and Civilization II are all worthy candidates for the spot in my opinion.
There is no such thing. But the only games I consider anywhere close to "perfect" are the Arcade Virtual On games. Shinobi III would also be my closest second, but it took too long for me to get into to be as "perfect" as Virtual On Oratario Tangram.
This is also completely and obviously limited by my preference for Arcade/Action games. I always compare story driven games to novels and literature, and none of them have objectively "better" stories than what has been written before. ;)
I have to go with Phantasy Star IV. It's the perfect game.

Well it is very subjective but I will try to quantify it by saying the point of all videogames is to bring entertainment (well its mainly profit, but whatever, well go with entertainment).
In my opinion, is Pac-Man. No other game is considered fun by more people, period. Take anyone from a 4 year old, to some hardcore video game player, to a 85 year old grandma, they will be able to sit down and play pac-man for a while and will enjoy it. No other game comes anywhere near it in that regard. Didnt businesses lose billions of dollars when google had pacman on its frontpage for a while there? No other game would cause that. Maybe Tetris, but it still doesn't appeal to as wide an audience.

Peggle. It's simple enough for literally anyone to grasp in ten seconds flat, and addictive enough - oh man, is it addictive - to keep you coming back for more.
I would say Dark Castle for Genesis.

The closest games that come to perfection are the following.
SMB 3: Far better that any other installment in the series. Especially the disappointing Super Mario World, then again how could you follow up a classic like SMB 3? Super Mario World was good, but after the previous game it was nothing special. The graphics were great and did what they needed to do, the music was unforgettable, and of course the were the mechanics. They had perfect jumping, gravity and all that good stuff.
Shenmue: One of the greatest games not because of its gameplay (which was good), but because of the depth that it went. Playing detective, beating but crapheads that dared to challenge you, even the random nature of the capsule toy machines. Overall the game really isn't a game, it's an experience.
Street Fighter II CE: This game had everything that the first game had, but now with the 4 "boss" characters as selectable characters. The music was excellent, the mechanics were undeniably great, characters alone could win awards. Nowadays the Street Fighter characters look... overly Japanese, when back in the day they actually had a certain "organic" look to them.
Cosmic Ark: Imagic had a thousand things going right with this game. Extremely addicting gameplay, flashy graphics, entertaining sounds. You could give it a graphical update and it would become a 1 hit wonder. Granted you'd have to charge 5 bucks for it, but having crazy little animals running across the bottom is entertainment enough.
Pac-Man wins. Super Mario Bros. is the runner-up. We're not having this conversation if those two games don't exist.

For me personally it would have to be Zelda A Link To The Past. There are lot's of good games that I love, but that one reigns at the top.

It's NOT streets of rage. I just can't beat it, even on normal. I got to the end boss for the first time last night and got him down to 25% energy and I got killed by one of his bitch goons. It's those fire breathing fat guys I just can't get down The Blaze twins aren't too bad, but I lose life after life on those fat f***s. The Freddie guys are a bit of a pain too, but it's just that one enemy that soaks up all my lives.
I just wish it wasn't such an early masterpiece with really great music and good atmosphere that keeps making me want to play. It frustrates the Hell out of me.
Really enjoying Shadow of the Colossus for PS2 at the mo though, that one slipped me by. Nice to see the site up and running again.

FF7's story was nothing compared to PSIV. I probably should have elaborated and said story in the first place since that's what I was thinking at the time. Aeris Death vs Alys death... Cloud's development was less phenomenal, it sort of did it, but in the most ass way possible. If you want another RPG thrown in there that beats out FF7/Chrono Trigger then I'll toss in Xenosaga.
As for Super Mario World, disappointing in the manner that it was definably inferior to SMB3. You ask a group of friends that have played both "you want to play Mario 3 or Mario World?" Mario 3 is going to be the answer.
Street Fighter IV has the same graphical styling as SF2? In SF2 they looked like they could be legitimate people. But in SF3/4 their hands and feet are like 1.5-2 times bigger than they should be. Makoto is still hot in that tomboyish way, but if she were made in the styling of SF2 she would be hotter than Chun-Li.
Cosmic Ark I threw in there, it was an old Atari 2600 game, but with an amazing amount of charm to it. I tossed it in there for the factor that there is no "grandpa game" category in videogames which really should be there.
And you want me to go into Oot? Water Temple, all that needs to be said. Inside the tree is bland, I have to give credit to the village and the city, a little to the castle. Other than that it was stuff I had seen before, even before that game.
We can put SOR back in for the title, I just this minute beat it! My favourite game ever, it's a toughie, but it might be international karate for the C64. It's just so good at what it does and is always fun. Never completed that one either, just like most of my games.
Tetris
Specifically the classic style with the old scoring system and no ability to hold a piece. New versions of Tetris make me cry.
Im gonna go against the stream here, and pick a modern game. Mass Effect 2. It just has it all for me. Good gameplay, great voice acting, good story, good choices you can or have to make. All delivered in almost perfect presentation. Next closest thing are the GTA titles, from 3 and up which has pretty much the same ingredients.

That's seriously a tough one. I'd have to say probably Tetris on the NES though. Followed VERY closely by Metroid and Blaster Master on the NES.

Donkey Kong Country!
1 or 2 (the 3rd one disappointed). True masterpieces. I can't get enough of it. It never gets old for me and is extremely fun. The graphics were some of the best for the SNES. The level designs were awesome and just the right amount of challenge. The Lost World in DKC2 is ridiculously hard though. And don't forget the amazing soundtrack. I can't think of 1 flaw. Just an amazing game all around. A timeless classic IMO
