Anybody here has custom painted a Genesis? I want to buy a cheap Genesis 2 and do a custom paint job on it. What I want to know is:
What kind of paint should I use. Normal spray paint? Will it flake?
Do I need to sand-paper the surface of the plastic so the paint will adhere better?
Do I need to use some kind of primer along with the paint?
This could prove to be an interesting project, just need to know exactly how to go about it.
Sorry mate, meant to get this up while you were online but was called away. Do use primer, otherwise we're talking about painting over black, always a bad idea. That will be ample for paint adherence. Spraypaint wil suffice unless it's very cheap. For details/brushwork any decent modeling paint (say, one step below Testor) should prove durable enough for any normal console owner.
Just don't write "SNES" on it.
i have done custom paint jobs a few times now....ive had some pretty fuckin excellent results....one i did is as perfect as possible....but it took me AGES (weeks, if not months, in fact)
most definitely prepare your surface - sand it with fine sandpaper, then prime it.
after priming - T-CUT (or similar) to buffer the surface....clean it well with soap and water.
LIGHT coats of spray will yeild best results....i used enamel spray paint, which is very durable!!

after each coat - sand lightly, then T-cut / buffer it.....clean, then apply another LIGHT coat.
continue until the desired colour finish is present....then T CUT / clean.
Apply light layers of spray varnish (again, T cut between each layer)
The more layers, the better....the only problem with enamel is.....it takes AGEs to dry....and there are no shortcuts to it drying (although i tried, which fucked it up on several occasions)
if you have the patience of a saint, then youll get it done!!! lol

Another type of paint that would work well is Krylon Fusion. It is designed to be used with plastic. I just painted a model 2 as a test run and of course I have some problems with it. My color is not consistent between pieces because I did them at different times. I may try some wet sanding on it and try to balance out the color. If not, like I said, it was a test and I have a couple extra model 2 shells.

I've been reading a little on the materials required when doing good painting projects: Primers, sandpaper, good paint, etc. It's an expensive project to complete, I don't think I'll be able to do it just yet. Information is good though.Quote:

You can make it look like either car simply by following my earlier instructions. You only need to follow the other members' exhaustive approaches if you plan on playing with it like a toy car. Primer and model paint. A couple small jars of Testors should be no more than $8 and will coat your small Sega system; that paint is very durable, and they probably offer a colour exactly like the EL Camino's. At worst you might have to shell out for a 'pearlescent' undercoat. Sanding were overkill.
