Wii U? More like Pii U. Color me unimpressed.
LOL! I agree that the Wii U name is absolutely retarded. The graphics capabilities bring it up to where Sony and MS have been for a while now. It does have 6 channel uncompressed linear PCM audio over HDMI, though, so the sound is at least better than the Xbox 360, but not as good as the PS3 which can do 8 uncompressed channels. The controller will become tiresome to play real games on and I must say that the controller seems like another gimmick.
Looking forward to:
Ninja Gaiden 3
Rage
Aliens: Colonial Marines
Mass Effect 3
Bioshock Infinite
Metro: Last Light
The Darkness 2
Shinobi 3DS
Battlefield 3
Batman Arkham City
That they kept the sub-brand name "Wii" to continue the line (ala Game Boy or DS) attests to the fact that they really don't plan to move forward as the "next generation" of consoles. It's not like the move from NES to SNES, and definitely not like the move from PS1-PS2-PS3 or XBox-XBox 360. IMO, it will be another "Wii" down the road. And since I don't buy systems at launch anymore, I already see myself waiting up to three or four years beyond 2012, just after Microsoft and Sony would have released their "next gen" consoles themselves and a library would have been established for all three. :?
I do like the controller, though. If only for the prospect of ultimately being able to play DS (and perhaps even 3DS) games on the big screen (Castlevania, anyone ;)). After all, Nintendo has never been known for the most ergonomic of controllers. 'Tell you what, though, if they do decide to give us a "DS Player" (ala Game Boy Player on the GC), then that will be reason enough for me to get the system. As for its backwards compatibility with the Wii, that sure will make my current Wii completely obsolete and as inconsequential as my GC would have been without the Game Boy Player itself. :?
And then there is the issue of the PlayStation Vita. Wouldn't that make it's "cloud gaming" feature and overall interphase with the PS3 a Wii U in itself? The price is right on this one, but still I want to know what exactly are they planning to do with their library. I can see myself making the Vita my main console (that's right, console) if it's able to connect (or stream) to your TV and the majority of the games worth playing come in hard copy format. Otherwise, I've a number of retro games to purchase still. Oh, and I'm so getting a PSP on black friday. ;)
Sony left me with one very big question. How in the hell am I going to come up with the money to buy all this crap???? For me, they won the show. Uncharted 3, PS Vita, and that monitor are very nice.....
Xbox left me less than impressed with its kinect show. Nintendo hasnt been relevant to me in years.
Speaking of that 3D monitor by Sony will it double as a TV too or just a fancy monitor?
That would make it virtually useless in my livingroom.
Nintendo opting out of the graphics race with the Wii was a turning point for the entire industry. Sony and Microsoft trying to outdo eachother with state-of-the-art machines is extremly costly, typically it takes years before they actually start profiting. Sony could just barely do it with the infamous PS3 launch. Seeing Nintendo's cost-effective approach profiting way more per console sold, they started rethinking their strategies.
Now Nintendo is launching new hardware which finally lets third parties develop multi-platform titles for MS, Sony and Nintendo simultaneously without any hassles. The timing is good, because the others are obviously going to hold on to their current gen machines much longer than usual to get more money back from their insane investments.
Most of the games presented just bored the hell out of me. All those military shooters, Uncharted 3, BioShock Infinite, etc. They spend so much time creating these cinematic experiences that will play out exactly the same every time. I realized years ago this just isn't for me, it's not the reason I play video games. I want to see a much harder push in player-driven narratives.
I don't know enough about Wii U to be something to want, but for sure I want Uncharted 3 and a 3DS system to hold me over until Wii U details are released. I want to know how Nintendo is going to handle Virtual console purchases on the next system. (transferable I hope).
This E3 was incredibly MEH. Microsoft was just completely LAWL with the Kinect-a-thon, and Nintendo's WiiTablet didn't impress me (to be fair, it's early and they really haven't shown much yet). Sony was completely underwhelming, though much better than last year. Uncharted 3 is sure to be a great experience, probably EXACTLY the same experience as the previous two: Nathan climbs across 2 buildings just to open a door, ALMOST falls to his death once or twice, opens door, runs into an empty area, enemies pop out, he kills them, wash, rinse, repeat.
The only game that blew me away was Skyrim, but that's Elder Scrolls, so that's a given. I liked Ghost Recon: Future Warrior, but not enough to spend $60 on it. The new Sly Cooper has me cautiously intrigued, and I'm definitely getting the Halo remake (updated graphics, the best campaign of the bunch, 4-player online co-op, achievements? HELL YES). That's about it though.
Where the hell are Sega, Capcom, Konami, etc.?
And exactly how much would a monsterous tech filled controller like that cost U?
