What wrong will SWIV, R-type, R-type 3 and Blood Money?
Printable View
Rendering Ranger is more on the style of Turrican and stuff, not a "shmup".
I (and everyone else on the planet) recommends Gate of Thunder for the PCE for the best horizontal, and Spriggan for the best vertical.
SWIV has no music and it's an atari-st port.
R-type is just ok on the amiga.
Didn't know there was an R-type 3 on the amiga.
Blood Money is just bad.
I did however forget about Uridium 2, that game is EXCELLENT, so original (well... uridium was) while being super fun with great graphics and music.
hmm Gate of Thunder, as a fan of shmups, I'm gonna have to check it out
out of those games I'd have to go with R-Type III, though I really like the Twinbee and Parodius games on the SNES more.
R-Type 2 - Now this is a good arcade conversion. Not that big a fan of R-Type prior to number 3, my favorite being the "black sheep" R-Type Leo.
Dragon Breed - Poisoned by the existence of the Atari-St, awful colors. Gameplay could be better but the music is awesome.
Agony - Now I really like this game and it's an awesome tech demo, but it's actually a really bad shooter.
Disposable Hero - Good but not great, I dunno there's just something about the game that really irks me, probably the flow being constantly broken by the shops.
Stardust - I don't count Asteroids as a shoot'em up :p, but yeah it's a good game.
The Killing Game Show - Not a shoot'em up. HUD occupies too much of the screen. Terrible level design.
Z-Out - The weapons are extremely boring making the game itself boring, so are the backgrounds. Colors and music are really good.
Xenon 2 - Quite possibly one of the most overrated shooters of all time. The game is just CRAP. I really do love that music though... so damn catchy.
Stardust may start up feeling like an ASTEROIDS me too title, but the pace picks up, making it more like Robotron and Geometry Wars.
Space Megaforce. It sucks that compile is no more. They made some fun games.
am I the only that knows that the makers of space megaforce were also the makers of the nes game known as dr.jackal and mr.hyde?
^^^Compile made Space Megaforce, Toho only published it.
Also, I love how you can switch the style of your current weapon in Space Megaforce.
For example, If you have a laser gun, you can change it to homing laser by pressing the X button, and if you have floating options, you can make em stationary.
R-Type III gets my vote.
Great graphics, nice music, solid controls and challenge level, multiple forces, and some devious twists (like having to fly backward) make for a great and tough game.
Why no 'Other' ?
The best shump on SNES is the mini-game in Bart's Nightmare.
Nothing else is really even remotely playable.
I'm a Gradius fan, so Gradius III gets my vote. Considering how the arcade version is just an absolute nightmare, the Super NES version is a better game overall. I like Axelay, UN Squadron and Super Aleste, but not enough to rank 'em higher than Gradius III. As for R-Type III, I can't stand it, but I f***ing love the music, especially the remix of the first R-Type's first stage. Considering I usually hate remixes, that's saying a lot.

PCE HuCard - don't forget W-Ring, that's one of my favorite PCE shmups... Sylphia for PCECD is great too. There are some more okay ones in addition, as well as not good ones like the awful Legion for PCECD.
Also PC Denjin Rockabilly was called Super Air Zonk in the US, and Galaga '88's US version is Galaga '90.
Anyway, best SNES shmup? Gradius III, no question. It's my favorite shmup of the generation in fact, Gradius III is a truly exceptional game. The PCE/TG16 has the best overall shmup library of the generation hands down, but Gradius III for SNES is number one on my list.
Tks to this thread I was just playing Macross again.
Still great, will play it to the end later!
I did not want to include imports in this poll. sorry.
Okay, I just finished playing Macross, and it is indeed an awesome game. Great graphics, cool music, decent challenge, heaps of bosses and mini-bosses.
I proudly stand by my previous statements!
And no imports in a best shmups poll? It's almost the same as having a best RPG poll with no FF... (I guess)
I found this thread by googling "Axelay overrated." Just don't tell Kollision. :D
Same. Big fan of Gradius, so Gradius III got my vote.
Yes, I'm not getting the Macross love either. There's some objective flaws that get to me;
- you can't change forms/weapons if you double tap the change button too fast. And since you can't scroll left or right like in Axelay for weapon change, it greatly slows weapon change toggle if you want to switch to a weapon 2 button taps away. Which sucks when trying to power up other weapons and what not because you have to take your time, meanwhile the game is not waiting on you.
- game is too memorisation heavy for having no checkpoints, especially for how long these levels go on for. I mean, everyone rags on Super R-Type for this but not this game? I'd rather stick to Super R-Type.
- having a lifebar is no excuse for enemies to always ram into you from off screen Euro game design philosophy. Game was made in Japan. Therefore I expect it to stick to Japanese STG seal of approval.
Subjectively;
- I just don't find this game that visually interesting. And outside of that kickbutt stage 3 tune, it's style over substance ways don't quite work on me.
These are just some of my early observations from trying to give Macross another chance recently. I don't know, will give it a few more tries and see what happens...
It's Space Megaforce, but i dig R-Type III. surprised by all the Axelay votes, personally.
R-Type 3 for me, not an easy game, got it and Axelay while they were both cheap (wish I had picked up Space Mega Force years ago, like Compile, but their games just feel like one long chore as it seems a lot of games seemed to have stages with the same backdrops). Axelay is pretty giood, hate the overhead stages, but love the side stages as they remind me a lot of Gradius, even the score font is about the same.
To my surprise, the more I played, the more I realised my fave stage was the overhead lava stage (reminds me of Salamander) followed by the overhead city stage (reminds me of PCE shooters. Think Sapphire stage one is what comes to mind?). So two overhead stages. But there's another reason I realised later. The vert lava stage has no horizontal movement (so tighter gameplay and your ship never gets tugged at). And the vert city stage has some horizontal movement, but it's not a looped infinite scroll like stage 1.
In the end I really didn't care for any of the horizontal stages. Though when I play the vert stages, I always can't help but think of what it could of been without that 3D affect (Salamader 2's awesome graphics come to my mind each time this thought enters).
Oh yeah, and I hate how everything blends in those horizontal stages.
I think this post still sums it up the best.
IMO pacing is what really keeps the best SNES shooters from being at the same level of the best MD and PCE shooters.
Axelay is overrated to the tits. The horizontal levels have a lot of those "enjoy travelling on an empty screen while I try to decompress the next wave of enemies for you" sections. It hurts, sometimes it takes more time to do that than Gaiares would (another one with this pacing flaw).
Macross is even worse in such aspect.
Super Aleste is good but, then again, its pacing is clearly inferior to Blazing Lasers and Super Star Soldier.
BTW, I voted for R-type III years ago and I probably would vote for it again.
While I agree Axelay is overrated, I still acknowledge it as a great or great enough shooter. Though not exactly my type, despite being a Konami shooter with enough Konami vibe to it (love Konami shooters). Macross, on the other hand. I'm not sure. Nor do I think I can go on with it to find out for more certain.
Interesting info about enemy waves being decompressed, Barone. But still doesn't explain why for that Robocop boss you have nothing to do but twirl your thumbs for 25 seconds until the screen stops scrolling and the actual boss fight begins (as after boss reveal at 10 seconds in, there's no point to do anything since he's invincible & harmless while he's always shooting at nothing but dirt and the screen still scrolling for another 15 seconds). I mean, you don't mean to tell me the SNES here is hiding CD quality load times?
Also, one of my biggest motivations to beat or 1cc Axelay (1cc just ended up being the easiest route, actually) instead of give up, was to finally be put this game behind me once and for all.
Heresy, heresy everywhere I go!!!!
Gyahhhhhh
:)
Sonic Wings its a decent port.
I always liked UN Squadron.
Finally, you made it. Especially because I also want to ask you something. You must of been pulling your hair out when fighting that boss in the speed stage of Macross. I went as far as using a state save and still he whooped my butt time and time again. That boss is crazy. (Also, that stage and boss is so inspired by Gradius III SNES. Only they forgot the part where Gradius bosses aren't supposed to be that hard! :p)

^ I also have no idea how that guy is capable of getting that seemingly pixel perfect placement to dodge those 4 lasers by staying directly in the center of him. Unless ship 2, the ship I used, has a bigger hitbox. As I could only pull it off at random it seemed.
Vertical - Space Megaforce. Pretty much undisputed there, maybe Imperium but even that is a very distant second.
Horizontal - I'd pick Gradius III over R-Type III but I can understand otherwise, both are a good choice. Never had any interest in UN Squadron.
Mixed - Axelay, I like shmups that mix it up. Reminds me of Life Force on NES. Anyone who enjoys Axelay should check out Iridion II for GBA.
Roaming - Pocky & Rocky. I really like this game. This and Twinkle Tale make me feel like it's a cozy autumn day out.
Really, you like Imperium. How far did you make it in that game?
It isn't so much that I like Imperium as I do hold Space Megaforce in high regard. Today, I'd certainly place it on the lower-end of the shmup totem pole for its generation.
I had played it years ago, and I certainly didn't beat it then. The MUSHA/Spriggan-influence today is a lot more obvious, but on its own I'd guess it's still worth a play assuming it's still a $20.00 game.
I wouldn't say Super Aleste is the undisputed best vertical, I happen to like Aero Fighters more. Super Aleste just can't grab me.
Axelay imo
