Perhaps because it's a shorter game with varied backgrounds, and IMO it feels like a far better game than Super Aleste. Super Aleste just seems like to goes on for an eternity, but Aero Fighters is better for a quick pick up and play.

It's been a loooong time since I played Macross, and I only remember I did it with Max.
But looking at the footage of the boss I'd say you should focus on the bombs that he drops 'n move slowly towards the walls to create that fire barrier, while at the same time avoiding to stay in front of him.
This is the most important aspect of the fight in order to preserve health.
If he moves closer then you can pummel his face as you dodge the 3-bullet spread. It seems he won't fire lasers or drop bombs at this time, an action that's resumed only when he retreats.
I seen this video yesterday of top US released SNES shooters and thought the guy did a pretty excellent job on the order and short but to the point commentary.

Since he seems like he's one that actually plays his games, I had to check his channel to see what else he has. Which is mostly lets play, but he does such great commentary as I ended up watching all his Ghouls and Ghosts LPs for Halloween month. Starting with the Genesis port and finishing with the SMS.
I enjoy watching his videos. Austin has been doing "let's plays" for a couple of years now. What I like about his videos is that he will often times describe how he procured the game, his personal history with the game, how it compares to similar titles he's played to completion, his perception of the overall quality of the title, and suggestions/hints of how to beat certain areas of the game.
Axelay. It's crack and one of the few shooters with a reasonable difficulty. The music kills it too.
"Blazeon: An average conversion of a mediocre arcade game"
"EDF has boring level design"
"Super Aleste is a repetitive slog"
yeah nah. Also surprised to see the lame Super R-Type at number 2 lol, just play arcade R-Type II. Slowdown is justified in Gradius III or Parodius because the arcades also had it and were based around it, but Super R-Type just feels like a slog compared to R-Type II.
Well EDF has no level design outside of the last stage (1 of 6).
Super Aleste is long. Plus for some the Aleste games just don't click. I mean, just watch his LP and hear him out as he talks about it while playing.
And Super R-Type is different enough from it's Arcade counterpart, R-Type 2. R-Type is this guy's favourite series. Plus Super R-Type is a personal childhood favourite of his that he still frequently comes back too.
So I still stand by what I said. I've personally yet to see a better SNES top US only shooter list. My hunch about this guy was right, he does play a lot of shooter and is good at them from his streams and lets plays I've so far seen. How many out there making bogus top 10 lists can say that? Either way, I'm very happy with discovering this guys YouTube and Twitch channel.
Level design =/= only walls, you can make level design based around enemies as proved by the hundreds of vertical shooters that don't rely on walls. I thought people had clear this already.
And yeah no wonder he doesn't like Super Aleste if he plays it on Normal difficulty, lol. The game is like 10x better on Wild.
Super R-Type has a couple different stages, but the rest just feels like poor man's R-Type II.
And his list isn't bad, I just disagree with some of those comments.
Well yes, I disagree with some things too. Just saying the list is pretty good.
