It had some okay games. But not enough to make me want to buy one.
Most of the really good games for it were either really hard to come by, or imports in an age when imports were not an easy thing to acquire. Also, I hated their sophomoric ad campaigns. Johnny Turbo was such a fucking putz.
Didnt get my first turbo untill 98
Oh ya baby...I love the Turbo Duo.
Got about 86 games for it.
I get the impression the Wallet Rape-16 and it's Japanese equivalent are awfully overrated. Yeah it's great if you like shooters, but many other genres end up feeling rather lacking. Did I mention the weeaboo fans have jacked prices up so high, the Neo-Geo high rollers would blush?
Its definitely not a "collector on a budget" friendly system, and forget finding games for it just lying around in garage sales like you can with most other consoles. Hell I've held more Atari 7800 games in my hands than TG16 ones.
I don't know what your talking about, but this is certainly a collectors system. It descended both 8-bit and 16-bit eras and delivered a lot of great games. Not to mention, it was developed by the collaboration of 2 obscure companies. To me, you seem to be generalizing a bit, because there are lots quality games available for this machine. Definitely consider exploring it.
Actually, most games are pretty cheap. Unless most Neo Geo games go for more than $5 - $30 or that's expensive to you. The PCE has more RPG and RPG-like games than shooters, but shooters only make up around 10% of the library. There is something like 700+ games, so chances are you'll find enough games to enjoy from the other 500+ titles.
It definitely is a "collector on a budget" friendly system. Ever since Japanese sellers started shipping internationally.
I'm guessing that the myth that Turbo/PCE games are expensive comes from the handful of games that are advertised and occasionally sell for too much money. Even though the ones even the average Turbo/PCE fan has even heard of make up only 1% of the catalog.
There are so many great games that can easily be found for only $5 - $10.
Much like the SNES and MD, it's worth getting for the exclusives (or just downright superior versions).
It has a TON of great games:
Gate of Thunder
Lords of Thunder (Don't let the crazy sega fans here tell you otherwise, the Sega-CD version is shit in comparison)
Soldier Blade
Nexzr
Spriggan
Spriggan Mark 2
Castlevania: Rondo of Blood
Beyond Shadowgate
Blood Gear
Macross Eien No Love Song
Legend of Xanadu 2
Ys IV
Magical Chase
Devil Crash (the pce version is superior)
Bonk's Revenge
Air Zonk
Legendary Axe
Blazing Lazers
Tengai Makyo Kabuki Den
Solid Force
Snatcher
Street Fighter 2
Langrisser
Neo Nectaris
Magicoal
Kisou Louga 2
Metal Stoker
Bomberman 94
Bloody Wolf
Anearth Fantasy Stories
Kaze Kiri Ninja Action
Last Alert
Just some of my favorites.
that thing had snatcher? lol
I have a region modded pce engine duo-r and it is very fun to play. I have a variety of different types of games and enjoy most of the games I have for it.
The PCE version was a major upgrade over the previous versions and added the Third Act. The Sega-CD version is a slightly altered port of the PC Engine version. If there had been no PCE version, there would be no Sega-CD version. The Space Adventure, Mega Bomberman, Valis III, Exile and Lords of Thunder are also ports of PCE games.
I have a Duo and 69 games. It can be pretty difficult/expensive to acquire the system's worthwhile games, unless playing RPGs in Japanese is your idea of a good time. But it's definitely a great system.
I really like a good number of the PCE games on cards and discs, but my Duo has been having sound issue from day 1. Got it fixed and all was well until a few days after I got it back, and the sound issue came back just like it was before the repair. Pretty frustrating to say the least.
