I've been collecting for the TG-16 and PCE for years now and while it may more expensive to collect for than most other systems, it's certainly nowhere near Neo-Geo territory. And what weeaboo fans? LOL

The Turbo Duo was always a system that I had a passing curiosity for, but it does feel a bit on the pricey side. First of all, the Turbo Duo itself is expensive. A T-16 unit is attainable, but the add-on CD unit has a reputation of crapping out rather often, and it's expensive whether it works or not, which is the same kind of heresay that would scare out of trying to get a Jaguar CD unit.
Secondly, it seems like the kind of system where you're going to have to go about getting games one at a time - I rarely see lots of 5-10 games go for reasonable prices on ebay (no matter what the games are) whereas it's not uncommon bump into a nice 10-15 game Genesis lot for 30-50 bucks. The Genesis really does feel a lot more "collector on a budget" friendly.
I recently went through a "How about I start collecting for an odd retro system" phase with the Turbo Duo and the Atari Jaguar in mind, and the funny thing is that judging by rising prices for both systems, I wasn't the only one that was thinking about it. I get the feeling that if i was going to do it, I should have done it a few years ago. In the end, i decided to just collect for the Genesis and the Sega CD (the SCD being another system for which I've noticed rising prices recently), thinking that at least I have a history with these systems, and I'll probably enjoy collecting for them more.
It's all about perspective. Didn't the PC-Engine outsell the Super Famicom and Mega Drive? Shouldn't the systems and games hold little value since they are so common, therefore? There is zero reason for the obscene prices. It's almost like US SNES prices, except more extreme. By comparison, TG-16/PCE makes the Neo-Geo look like the N64 as far as prices go. In perspective though. You have to account for the fact that the PCE sold extremely well, almost like a 16-bit US NES. Whereas the NG sold poor numbers, but brought in decent money.
Weeaboo = Japanophile
It seems everybody and his dog in the US is clamoring for a PC-Engine because it has so many OMGWTFBBQ games on it... Even though a SNES and Genesis certainly compare and for an extremely small fraction of the cost.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not hating on the TG-16/PCE itself because that would be stupid. I'm hating the fans for driving the prices so damn high. What's the point in so many great games, if they are unattainable to regular people? Sure you could just use backups, but then again, some of us like to own original copies.
I've been on a PC-Engine kick for a bit recently, but what's funny is I originally started by picking up a TG16 from a guy and quickly realized that there's a crazy bubble going on with TG stuff. I was able to pick up a ton of PCE stuff at a really nice price, so I've got more PC Engine HuCards and CDs than US stuff.
I've also seen prices rising on a lot of the older CD stuff. I've almost finished my SegaCD collection, I'm only missing two games (one ultra-common and one pretty rare), but a lot of anything with collecting for these is patience. Don't go for BIN singles, just wait for an auction if you can. The BIN prices are what I think is responsible for the upward trend in TG stuff in general since each new BIN seems to be higher than the last.
Where are getting all of this from? Your logic that there should be enough quantity to allow reasonable prices is correct, but your comments about the actual prices is fantasy.
Do you also think that the Genesis family of games is uber expensive, because of games like Musha, Rockman Mega World, Panarama Cotton, Snatcher, The Space Adventure, Shining Force CD, Spiderman Web of Fire and Darxide?
I picked up my Duo/R a few years ago and have had no shortage of affordable games to pick up since then. I also avoid games with tons of Japanese text/voice unless the gameplay proper is very action oriented (see Legend of Xanadu). I've picked up all of the TG16 games I owned back in the day for less than $15 each, and even picked up a few more that I wished I owned but never did like Neutopia, Splatterhouse and Military Madness. These were between $20 and $40 each, Military Madness came new sealed for that. I also just snagged Victory Run for $9.50 and will hopefully land Final Lap Twin for less than $15 soon. I picked up the imports of Altered Beast CD, Space Harrier, R-Type 1+2, After Burner II, and Shinobi for similar prices. Operation Wolf, Street Fighter 2 Champion Edition, Sim Earth, Populous, Art of Fighting ACD, Fatal Fury 2 ACD, Strider ACD, Black Hole Assault, Double Dungeons, Gate of Thunder, Riot Zone, Valis II, and Valis III were all between $10 and $40 as well.
Unfortunately some of the games I want the most are between $50-100, but they charge $60 for the crap they sell on modern consoles, I just got used to spending $10-15 on games for Sega systems. ;)
I did snag Castlevania Rondo of Blood for $115 a couple of years ago, and I will probably bite the bullet and spend $80 on Double Dragon II CD at some point. There are still plenty budget priced games to snag though, I've been eying Power Drift for $20 for a while now. Forgotten Worlds, Godzilla, Last Alert, Lords of Thunder, Vasteel, Ys Book 1+2, Ys III, Aero Blasters, Bloody Wolf, Cadash, Chase HQ, Devil's Crush, and S.C.I. are also on my want/watch lists. I doubt the average cost of picking all of these up will go over $30 each.
I had a Turbo Express with BONK and Chase HQ and then it got stolen. That’s about it.
Wallet-Raper 16... :D It sure is. While you can pick up a few HuCards or CDs at a decent price, most are mind-rapingly expensive. The consoles certainly are - it's rare to see a plain USED TG-16 for less than $80 by itself, and the CDROM is just outrageous. If you're lucky, you might find a duo or equivalent for around $150, but don't hold your breath. I've got a SuperGrafX, and only got it because one of the members here refurbished it himself then offered it to me knowing I was looking for one. So while I'm part of the craze, I can admit the prices are crazy. I don't even want to think about trying to add a NeoGeo to my collection.
:daze:
I think that most gamers on a budget tend to lean towards open auctions more often than BINs, but I think that even the auctions are running high on TG-16 gear lately. It's probably the widening scope of the internet, but it almost feels like it just recently (the past 3 to 5 years) became hip to get into the TG-16, because I couldn't pay anyone enough to talk about it back when it was out.
I have a PCengine Duo R with about 20 or so games. I'm not a weaboo, a hardcore shooter fan, or someone who feels like paying seventy five million dollars for a single game, and I have to say that I've enjoyed the system quite a bit. Some games can be expensive, but there's still lots of games that are worth playing that you can get for like 5-25$ And the best part is, well, you can burn games for it.
this is complete nonsense. the PCE has plenty of good games that aren't shooters.

Also, the second line completely contradicts the third one. $30 sure is expensive, wow.
