If anyone has bought this controller, is it worth buying? Are the buttons at least okay? What about the joystick? Is it stiff? Does it offer enough resistance?
Further more, does it have any problems connecting to the N64? Like showing "No Controller" when it's plugged in?
I'd imagine they have a stolen copy of the negative molds, so yes, get it and use it to replace an original controller's analog stick. Let me know how it turns out.
Just get a normal n64 controller FFS, not like they're expensive and it's better than risking the $5 you might save trying to buy some piece of junk.

There's a problem with that, most off brand n64 controllers use potentiometer based joysticks, where as, the original controller, uses a light detection method. Which makes them both completely incompatible with one another.Quote:

I heard those cloned Nintendo 64 controllers are complete junk. I personally would NEVER buy this type. If you want an off-brand controller, get RetroBit's Nintendo 64 controller. It's a little harder to use than Nintendo's original controller due to the fact the deadzone is a bit big on this controller, but aside from that, it works pretty damn well. That's the RetroBit controller I have and I really like it. Some actually have PlayStation-style caps on the analog stick, complete with a very nice textured rubber top(mine is like that). If it was up to me, I wouldn't use any official Nintendo 64 controllers due to them wearing out(I only have one official Nintendo 64 controller with a tight analog stick and I don't even use that because I want to keep the analog stick tight, and yes, I have lubricated all the plastic parts in the stick) unless the analog stick has been replaced by this type: http://cgi.ebay.com/REPLACEMENT-Joys...item588e2ce33b
Only then will I consider using an official Nintendo 64 controller. Until then, I'll stick to my RetroBit Nintendo 64 controller(and my Tomee Nintendo 64 controller so I get used to that thing's oversensitive analog stick - seriously, that thing has an even bigger deadzone than the RetroBit controller and on top of that, it reaches maximum input before you actually push the stick all the way!).

I have literally refurbished 100+ N64 (original) control pads for the store I do repairs for. Before the new aftermarket toggles came out I was rebuilding the standard stick, it was a long and tedious process but worked (for how long though.....). Since the new aftermarket toggles have come out, it has made it a lot easier. They use the same mechanism as Playstation, XBOX etc type control pads. They aren't as sensitive, but they work very well. If you guys are keen I can pull one apart and take pics of the inner workings.
I sure would like to see what's going on inside those new-style analog sticks.
The Tomee controller is the worst offender in that regard as the side handles are just too damn short. The RetroBit controller has handles that are just long enough for my entire hand to get a good grip on it. But by far the biggest issue with both controllers is their calibration. The RetroBit controller has a big deadzone, but it has a pretty good range of motion. The Tomme controller, on the other hand, has an even bigger deadzone than the RetroBit controller and a REALLY small range of motion. You barely have to move the analog stick about 3/4 of the way and the controller registers full input. For some games, it's not a big deal(Super Smash Bros., in my case), but in racing games, it can be problematic(the Rush games, especially) and when it come to any flying games(Star Wars Rogue Squadron, for instance), the poor calibration of the analog stick makes it impossible to move your ship smoothly, especially when trying to steer it diagonally. I personally have only tried the RetroBit controller with Super Smash Bros., but I'll give it a shot with San Francisco Rush 2049 and Star Wars Rogue Squadron, then report back on how the controller works with those games.Quote:

As I said before these aren't as sensitive as the original. Say for example walking in Mario 64, Banjo Kazooee etc. With the original toggle there was creeping, creeping-walking, walking, walking-jogging, jogging, jogging-running, running (best way to describe it I guess). With the new toggle it appears to be more creeping, walking, jogging, running. The little in-between movements are harder to achieve. But they are a great item none-the-less.

See the weird, darker one? Those controllers rule, the stick is metal and it is metal inside, too. They take a bit of getting used to, but well worth it.
I have that controller, and I must say, despite it being considerably different from an official Nintendo controller, it works better than the Tomee and RetroBit controllers I have. My one problem with this one is with the stiffness of the analog stick which is inconsistent. For pure horizontal or vertical movement, it's perfect, but diagonal movement is harder as the stick becomes quite stiff. In regards to calibration, it's identical to the official Nintendo 64 controller: small deadzone and a wide range of motion.
I hope something like this doesn't cause an issue with Star Wars Rogue Squadron. I'm telling you, with most third-party controllers I've used, moving your ship around smoothly and precisely to get a good aim on your target is practically impossible. That's already a start, though I don't play that one very often. The games I play most often on the Nintendo 64 are Star Wars Shadows of the Empire, Star Wars Rogue Squadron, Super Smash Bros., San Francisco Rush Extreme Racing, Rush 2 Extreme Racing USA and San Francisco Rush 2049(not as often as the Dreamcast port). But if those analog sticks work well with Star Wars Episode I Racer, it should at least work well with the Rush games.
