No Retreat, No Surrender (1986)

Sorry but I think this movie deserves its own thread.


I highly recommend it if you have never seen it, it is what the movie Karate Kid (1985) should have been, and was released to directly compete with it. Unlike Karate Kid it showcases real martial artists (not just actors) and, the main star this is his only big movie he ever made. He probably quit martial arts after this movie which is a shame because he had a lot of talent at it early on.

Oh yeah and Van Damme is the bad guy of the flick (see GEESE HOWARD in a suit)

The funny part is both Van Damme and the main star of the flick were/are the same age, Van Damme being only one year older, see what legal european steroids do kids?

I stopped watched Karate Kid about 30 mins in; really need to get back and finish watching it.

I saw the movie when I was like 7 or 8. I don't really remember anything about it, other than the fact that it was badass. I'm now curious how it holds up today, maybe I'll keep an eye out for the dvd.

Awesome quintessentially 80s movie. I loved this one growing up, I think it's due for a viewing. Good call Shadow.

That's guaranteeing very little. Van Damme's stuff is pretty far from my interests but I don't think there's anyone who's done it as well. My favourite JCVD (can't call him just VD--that's more for Norris) tie-in is that Forrest Whitaker has a tiny role in Bloodsport. Silly.

I wish they would release this on Bluray I'd be all over it.

Martial Arts films suck. I'd rarther watch all four Pirates of the Caribbean movies than any Martial Arts movie.

I liked that movie. For some reason I always thought it had Brandon Lee in it. My favorite, though, is "The Last Dragon". I don't care if it isn't "real". I love it anyway. Taimak kicks ass. I also loved a movie from the late 80's early 90's called "The King of the Kickboxers" It had Billy Blanks in it as a bad guy, and Loren Avedon as the protagonist, both real martial artists. It also had some of the cheesiest sound effects imaginable, but was still fun to watch.

What's with the Van Damme fans flooding this forum as of late, complete with Van Damme avatars and Van Damme signatures ? - Did I miss something here ?
