If you could design one game for the genesis/md, what would it be?

I would make an all woman weapon fighter. 15 characters and one unplayable boss. The game will be tag team style and only one round. One of your characters runs out of life you loose. Infinite timer. You pick 2 characters. There will be a striker move(similiar to kof99) limited to 3 times a round. Also you will be able to "tag" switching characters at will. Super moves with a power up system similiar to Fatal Fury Mark of the Wolves. Combo system up to 10-12 hits max, nothing crazy(a few more mixed with striker moves). For the fighters some will have to be weaponed fighters to increase the variety.

My inspiration. I would want my game to be more serious looking though. Also aside from all woman fighters offcourse, to be as original as possible except for copying street fighter, fatal fury, samurai shodown and king of fighters.

What would you have made? Not saying if you could actually write the code, just to be in charge of the production.

An RPG. I know I wouldn't be the programmer, but I sure would be in charge of the artwork and writing. The Genesis can never have enough RPGs. :)

I think I would go RPG as well, or perhaps a point and click adventure game. I would make a game that uses a bunch of perifrials, the Menacer, the Activator, the Mega Mouse etc..

I would design an action RPG. We need more of those for the Genesis, (as good as Oasis or Secret of Mana)

I would create a sequel to Shinobi III. It would have cameos from all of the bosses from previous Shinobi games, gameplay elements from Revenge of Shinobi, Shinobi III and Strider combined, and just enough story between levels to keep the action center stage. Musashi wouldn't be an anti-hero, or a reluctant hero, he'd just be the best man for the job and the story would lead him to realize this.

I see the first level as a blend of the first level of Shinobi III and Revenge of Shinobi, where the forest opens up to the medieval Japanese castle setting. This level would allow for branching paths that would lead the player toward reliving previous Shinobi levels blended with new segments, or ... talking dogs. Yes, the real enemy would be talking dogs from outer space.

I probably would have designed a game where you trade real estate on the moon.

Actually, I started to plan a game that I came up with when I was drunk. It's called 'Side Quest' and it's a parody RPG. The main character gets sent to the village corner store by his mother to buy milk and he subsequently gets sidetracked continuously until he eventually saves his kingdom during a civil war.

Hmm...didn't know about these games. I did some research and see there is a part 1,2,3, & 4. Part 4 looks closer to Dreamcast graphics. I would love for any game let alone a fighter to get ported to the genesis. The buttons would have to change as part 1 and 2 from the pc engine runs off of 2 buttons.

This isn't really the direction I want to go with for my fighter. I'd want to leave the perviness out of it and keep it a serious fighter.

Yep. This robot only keeps getting wiser. The answer is Phantasy Star, the Climatrol Ruins. I expatiated upon this in the Games That Might Have Sold More Sega CD Units thread; due to size restrictions, it might have to come out as about a dozen lock-on 400 Meg carts.

I'd design something that plays similar to Monster World IV but within a cyberpunk universe similar to Shadowrun.

Multi genre. I'd like it to be a mix between a space ship shooter and rpg. You'd be a solider in a army in the midest of a war. You'd have to fight throw vertical and horizontal stages to land on the planet then engage in a rpg mode once landing on the planets. The character sprites and some special effects would be totally different when put in a 32x. There would also be 32x cd / regular cd movies throught the game. The sega CD would give the game voice acting and CD quality audio.

I think I would do a really long action rpg.

If you're actually making a reality I want in on it. I've had the idea for about fucking forever. My idea for the gunning parts was more of a time crisis thing that would use the justifier guns instead though.

The coolest idea I had was the shooting stages switching from vertical to horizontal in real time.

The game I have been really slowly making is a run 'n' gun with some shmup and brawling segments, with lots of optional exploration

First of all, I wouldn't try to set the world on fire or anything. The most important thing I've learned from my time in vintage gaming, is that too much ambition kills. Perhaps the only thing that survived too much of that is Pier Solar, but we all know that was a one-in-a-million sort of thing.

Now, with that out of the way. Here's the kind of game I'd do (I hate generic descriptions).

You are a sea diver, going out on the sea floor on foot in search of treasure. The only thing to protect you from all the creatures and beasts waiting to devour you is maybe a harpoon gun or something. The game would probably be horizontal-scroll only with lots of rooms, multiple paths and perhaps a choose-your-own-level approach, or just the usual point A to point B system. I'd want it to be kind of like Monster World and/or Slime World, but again something of it's own kind. I love greedy treasure hunting, so there would definitely be an incentive to hoard. I wouldn't want the graphics or music to be anything earth-shattering because that kind of ambition kills projects. All I'd want to do is simply, make a game that's fun. Single word would be my main driving focus.

I'm sick of the RPG love-fest going on in Genesis development, so I'd do nothing but action games.

I'd make a proper Sonic 4.

Something based on The War of the Worlds, the proper version set in Victorian London with minimum liberties taken with the story: So no imaginary weapons etc... like in other games.

Oh yeah, if there was more documentation and tools for the Sega CD, I'd expand upon it's sorry representation of the adventure game genre. I figure I've played enough of them for so long, I'd do alright designing one. I don't think a Genesis cartridge would suffice for an Adventure game, but it'd certainly be an interesting challenge.

I'd love to start learning how to program for the Genesis. Only problem is, I don't know where to start. There's still concepts, structure and styles of programming I simply do not know about. I'm alright with moving numbers around, loading stuff into RAM, things like that, but I don't know what to type into the assembler to do things like that, or even how those basic functions affect physical hardware, digital hardware and any other things you'd want to manipulate. It's kind of like knowing that a basic house has 4 sides and a roof, but not knowing how to put them together or even how to generate the things needed to build said house, or give it details and things like that. It's hard to explain, but I'm at a severe disadvantage to picking up programming.

Before anyone suggests it, I don't want to pester the technically enlightened users here to help me. I'd rather teach myself and take example from other people's work to create my own style of programming. But again, it all circles back to not knowing where to start, or even how to start. Maybe I should read the Motorola 68k instruction manual and a book on C. :|

I would make a Gauntlet 4/Dungeon Explorer 4 players kind of RPG but with an involved story and extraordinarly difficult dungeons with randomness so each time you enter, you may actually die. no feather of escape. entering a dungeon must be really scary. doing deeper and deeper even more. some boss would be really difficult but to allievate the learning process, you can find scrolls of info within the game that explain how to kill the beasts. Dungeons and bosses are designed so that looking on the internet won't help you beating the game.

genesis/32x music.

I would rework the creature/treasure spawning so that it cannot be abused like in Dungeon Explorer on the Mega CD.

if possible one or two shooter situations.
Difficulty ajusts itself to the number of simultaneous players.

I remember in Rings of Power staying 4 hours to solve a room puzzle with green trees labyrinth. How much I hated/Loved it. That's the spirit I want for as many levels as possible.

Game would be kinda infinite until you die in real life :)

My game would be called Castle Revenge.

Basically there would be this huge castle having a celebration and you would play a lone soldier, bloodied and bandaged, who sneaks in and goes on a rampage killing everyone. There would be lots of tasks you could complete, poisoning the wine, rescuing an imprisoned princess, finding and killing key people, setting fire to the place, etc. The cool thing is that you could leave the castle at anytime and get an ending. Depending on the tasks completed you would get a different ending. The real ending would only come after all the tasks had been done, of course. It would have one big continuous map like a metroidvania, but would be overhead like zelda with play mechanics similar to a brawler.

A Beat-em-up. Sort of like Golden Axe, except much faster paced.

With the much larger cart sizes nowadays, you already have a lot of flexibility with what you could do for that sort of gameplay. I'd blurt out my idea completely, but I'd sound like a self-serving idiot if I did so.

Of course, if I was to be more realistic and bend the rules of the topic a bit, a pucker design for Mega Lo Mania is in order. The current release has everything compressed, lagging the game way too much when loading different sectors. :p

Don't put the cart before the horse. Learn how to make a genesis game first (using SGDK for instance) and THEN try and figure out how it's all done in assembly. It's easier that way.

As for me, I've thought of this:
A multi genre, multiplayer, steampunk + magic game with:

- Selectable character "class" early in the game (abilities obtained and story change somewhat depending on the character)

- Overhead Action/Adventure segments (NOT Action RPG, there would be no level gaining, think Zelda / Beyond Oasis)

- Sidescrolling Dungeons (Like LoX bosses), but not just a linear path, it would have exploration like in metroid.

- Optional "Bonus Areas":

-- A shooter segment (axelay style perhaps, to show of the genesis. It's a lame trick but it fools the masses :p, No way I could program "Mode-7" like Fonzie)

-- A strategy style part.

-- A fighting part with giant robots

-- Mini games (bomberman :p?)

Golden Axe 4 ("Gilius Thunderhead in time", with use of 6 buttons) or an ambitious vertical Shoot'em up for 2 players and 3/4 players :)
Both with a touch of RPG (as Guardian Heroes, or Tyrian for those who know this mythic PC's shooter).

I'd love to try a port of The Simpsons Arcade Game to either the Genesis or CD system. I was just playing it the other night with my son and the color palette isn't that expansive.

As far as original ideas go, I'd probably like to design a fighter or a RPG.

I think I'd want to make a Metroid-like action/adventure game because there isn't much like it on the Genny.

I also wouldn't mind doing a humor based RPG. Something along the lines of Psychonauts if it was an RPG.

So far I've just designed the basic premiss of the game and the major story arcs as well as the battle systems in each segment. Like most people's ideas, everything at the moment is strictly on paper. I've not gotten involved in any coding yet. But I would love to collaborate with you and any others who would be willing to give this baby a chance at reality. If we could scrounge a team together that would be a dream.

I was planning to make a port of the original arcade Shinobi to the Genesis. But life has got a bit harder, and don`t expect anything in at least 5 years.

Streets Of Rage 4 - Ignoring the changes SOR3 made and going back to SOR2 taking away Skate and adding back Adam. Bigger cart with more levels with multiple paths and lots of unlockable stuff.

I don't understand this suggestion... Doesn't sound like a very good way to get started on Genesis, especially considering there aren't any "how to make a Genesis game" instructions out there. Trust me, I looked. The best I could find was Fonzie's old Genesis Technical Document Companion in glorious Engrish. Even then, it only explains the hardware from an overhead perspective. I don't know how to make the Genesis do stuff.

Why do all these programmers Melf has interviewed over the years make Genesis programming sound so easy...? Every time I read one of those interviews, it sounds like they got the Genesis down pat in only a few months, or less. Did they have documentation and instructions that we don't today?

I'd probably make a strategy RPG along the lines of Shining Force :) I've already done up a bunch of character designs, just for fun. It would have to be 48 Megs to contain all of its AWESOMENESS.

I would design a bullet hell shooter with small sprites to minimize flicker.

I don't care if there is some flicker...i would make it just for the hell of it.
