There were a fair number of unofficial controller variants made for the Genesis, with all sorts of rapid fire and slow-mo buttons/switches added, and programmable ones as well. There were also knock offs made for other systems that had traits similar to the Genesis controllers, so it's definitely a real controller, and I'd say there's a high probability that it's a real Genesis, third-party controller as well.
If it outputs a female 9-pin, then yes, it's a "real" Genesis controller.
It looks similar to the High Frequency controllers that were released BITD.

IIRC High Frequency was exclusive to Blockbuster. Maybe Mad Catz manufactured them under the High Frequency name for Blockbuster?
I hate 3rd party controllers. But I was wondering, did SEGA make an official 6-button controller that's the size of the Model 1 controller?
