Has anybody ever tried one of these controllers before? They look pretty good, but my concern is of the build quality (are they poorly constructed?). What about compatibility? I'd probably end up getting one, unless they're horrid creaky plastic carp... (How I hate most 3rd party controllers made uber-cheaply... :furious: ).

Just a few guestions if ya don't mind ;) : What OS do you use, or have tried it on? All my PCs have win7, and think of also dual booting ubuntu again. Do you know how it runs under Linux?
I have Windows 7. Never tried it on anything else.
I really think that Saturn usb controller is pretty darn nifty; I'll buy it tommorow

Using a 'classic' controller could be pretty cool for certain games on PC.
I just don't understand why people keep referring to them as Saturn USB controllers. There's no such thing. They're PC pads.
I recollect recently passing by a post that said his d-pad broke off. (?? Lastcallhall ?? Sheath ??). You could probably find it with a few searches. They look sweet though, hope it works out for you.
There are at least (edit)three versions of the Saturn USB Pad.
edit: I hadn't clicked the link before responding. Never saw that packaging before. It may be a cheap knock-off, or maybe some industrious English person got the rights to import and re-brand the SLS manufactured USB pads.
I'm suspicious of it though as there is no mention of Sega nor Saturn on the packaging. Looking at the picture I also wonder if the outer shell may be re-molded as the SLS controllers have a recessed area where the Sega logo is printed. That eBay auction appears to have a larger recessed area with the "Retro-Link" logo, and the d-pad looks flatter than the SLS original, but I really shouldn't judge from a low-res jpg.
I'm tempted to spend the $14 or whatever just to find out. Though surely someone out there on the internet has already dissected one of these and made a comparison to the previous Saturn USB pads. ...isn't there some fighting game forum that is all knowledgeable about controllers?
(my initial post) The original fully licensed version from Sega is known to have a very good build quality. Those pads had been sold out for a couple years when all of a sudden they started showing up again on eBay for like $12-16 shipped. We all couldn't believe they were the real thing. If you search shmups forum you should find a detailed thread about the whole deal. The final consensus was that they all have the SLS logo on the packaging and pad (same company that did the NeoGeo re-issue controllers) but that the latter versions indeed had a different circuit board and internal construction.. A couple people reported buttons wearing out on the later version, while the original versions weathered heavy use better.
I own a couple original PS2 Saturn pads, and a 2nd issue USB pad and both are outwardly identical, but I do think I perceive a difference in the buttons and d-pad between the two. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another if I saw them for <$30 again, and if you are a die-hard Saturn aficionado it may very well be worth upwards of $100.
I certainly feel the PS2 Saturn pads are worth whatever ridiculous price they're going for.
I'll buy it and report back to this thread, My concern now then is that the d-pad will fall off :/ How is something like a d-pad supposed to fall off?
the "SLS" pads (SEGA) are generally refered to as better then the "Retrolink" or "G-Trons" knockoffs.
Don't get too concerned unless you find the original thread I was remembering. 'Off' may not have been part of it, though simply 'broke' will suffice to ruin a controller, but the how goes something like this: the d-pad is connected to its base by a sort of cup-and-ball that allows it to pivot and in general gives it its distinctive, superior touch (as opposed to something like the PS pad, which uses a loose cross). Were either the ball or its shank made too thinly or of cheap plastic it could snap; whether the d-pad would fall out of the controller is a matter of housing, and irrelevant, but the way G d-pads are set up it probably should when broken.Quote:

The SLS are slightly better then Retrolink but for how cheap Retrolink are they more then do the job. The D-Pad on the retrolink can pop off all you gotta do is pop it back on.
Ah, I see. So the d-pad mechanism is similar (or exact, except in terms of materials) to the D-pads that the 6-button Genny controllers/Nomad/Saturn pads?
I don't know if the brand names even mean anything since there are likely knock-offs of knock-offs. But I bought one off of eBay a year or so ago for $15 shipped and it is of amazing quality. Compares very well to actual Saturn pads.
