Just ordered a Model 1

Haven't posted in a while because I didn't have a Genesis. But I'm going to be collecting for genesis exclusively now, and I really want to do it in semi-chronological order, starting with launch titles, and I refuse to buy without a clam shell.

I'm trying to do it right this round. I grew up with a model 2, but I just ordered my model 1 that has been fully cleaned and tested.

I'm trying to clarify something though with the audio outputs. Stereo output is ONLY available through the jack in the front of the console correct? Is there left and right effects on headphones?

Yes that is correct, but i believe there are users on this board who can mod model 1's so you can get stereo, s-video, component etc!

Ahh yes I've seen the s-video modded model 1's on CGR. Thought about attempting that one day myself. Of course that would also probably be the END of my model 1.

On a slightly off-topic but still related note, does anyone order from amazon? I ordered my genesis and my altered beast from there (I knew I wanted the first back in title first) and then decided to order Ghouls n' Ghosts and Golden Axe. I've been trying for two days and when I place my order the stupid loader on amazon, not my browser, just spins in a circle indefinitely. Its really frustrating because now my stuff is going to come in late and all I'll have the first day is Altered Beast.

This is easily the last thing people will recommend (in fact, I'm pretty sure I haven't seen anyone else recommend it in this forum), but if you're going for an "Omni-Sega" (Genesis/CD/32X), as my friend calls it, you can output perfect AV out through your 32X. You won't be missing out on a single thing. I'd stick with CRT TVs if I were you. Just make sure you've got AV input on your CRT. So, the only thing you'd be needing is a very affordable, very cheap STEREO AV cable (the kind that fits any model 2 Genny or 32X).

As for S Video, I've never come close to seeing a CRT with such input in the wild. But even if it does exist, it's quite a moot point if you asked me. I'd stick with Stereo AV Genny-to-CRT (at least 32") as the ultimate setup for your system. ;)

TV wise I have to work with what I've got. And what I've got is a composite HD. Not a widescreen. I've used a genesis on them before and it looked fine. I'll be moving in a year or so and leaving it behind so at that point I can discuss a change in televisions.

Audio-wise, if you don't feel like soldering anything, just buy a 3.5mm -> RCA cable from Radio Shack/Monoprice, plug it into the headphone jack, and connect that to your TV. (Crank it up to 10 and connect it to your home stereo for best results!)

Actually, I've got a mid-2006 27" Sony WEGA CRT with S-Video on it (which my Genesis is currently connected through) and it makes a world of difference compared to Composite and RF.

I just run component... looks good and no Modding needed.

CRTS with svideo are common as shit. Anything that has a flat screen tube has it.

Welcome to the club. I got a Genesis on launch but never really gave it much attention since I was more of a Nintendo person. I've found that I really enjoy collecting Genesis games though. I missed lots of gems, and they look great when they're complete in the box.

Well my first console was an NES. Someday I'll share the story about how I became a Segaholic, but I got a Genesis late in its game, post saturn announcement, and its still my most beloved system I owned with dreamcast as a close second. I decided a while back I wanted to do something where I slowly collected basically all the games for one console, in order of release year, starting with launch titles. Once I knew I wanted that to be my project, it wasn't hard to decide Genesis would be my target.

I sure hope this model 1 I ordered is in good shape. I passed up on one that came with the original box (would have been so awesome) because it was missing a cable and that gave me a red light. The one I ordered is said to have been fully cleaned and tested. So here's hoping.

If you plan to add a Sega CD, I recommend the Volume slider between 7 or 8. When I have the slider up to 10 it sometimes overpowers the Sega CD audio.

Everytime I read "model 1", I think on the Sega Modeler (model 1) arcade board :)

About modifying the console for S-video, it can be done for cheap, though I would recommend buying a SCART cable and a scart RGB to component converter, if your TV supports component, component is the highest quality next to RGB that you can get outside of Europe.

Although, in some games you'll soon discover that a bit of dithering is "required", S-video is better for Final Fight CD, since S-video doesn't eliminates dithering completely and that game looks too grainy over RGB or component (FFCD It is the only game I can think of right now, but I'm sure that there are more cartridge (and CD) games that use color dithering, Twinkle Tale?)

All good to know, though I can't claim to understand all of it. But thats ok because I'll be learning as i go. Some of you guys are going to pass out when I say this but unboxed, chances are my Genesis will be hooked up via RF switch. I know. I know. But as I step it up slowly from that to a composite cable to some kind of mod down the road it will be cool to experience the difference.

I DO intend to get a Sega CD and a 32X. However, I have this whole plan kind of laid out and its very obsessive compulsive but its part of what makes this fun for me. I won't be getting EITHER until I reach their release year. Its pretty weird knowing I'll have a lot of games before I even see our favorite blue hedgehog. But that's all part of the journey.

P.S. is there a way I can change my name? Do I need approval or something? I chosse this because I thought it was clever but to be honest gunstar heroes isnt even a game I've played and it feels like cheating. XD I'd like my name to match my youtube account.

Well I ordered my model 1 and Altered Beast on super early Monday morning, about 1 AM. Altered Beast got here today from California. I live in Virginia. So it traveled across the entire country. Lets see how the Genesis is fairing under the watchful eyes of Fedex:

Why do I have this nagging feeling that I've had a bad memory before...Like I feel I have some reason to already believe Fedex is the most incompetent shipping company on earth...but why? I can't remember. I'm nervous.

If something is going to come in first though I'm glad it was Altered Beast. A genesis without a game to test it on doesn't do me much good.

I used to work at UPS, what probably happened was that it was misloaded into the wrong trailer. It happened all the time when I worked there. If that's not the case, then yeah, that's pretty stupid. Because I know there are FedEx hubs throughout Virginia. But honestly, I wouldn't worry. Just keep an eye on it. :)

Friday I'm probably going to see Captain America. I am going to be so pissed if it comes in on Saturday when I have to go back to work.

It won't come on Saturday unless you opted for Saturday Delivery. And that option is only available with Next Day Air packages.

I'm the shipping clerk at my company. I deal with this kind of stuff all the time. But judging from where it's at now, you should get it by Friday.

What disturbs me most honestly isn't the fact that its in west virginia as much as the fact that it got there at 1 am and hasn't budged.

I'd track it again later this evening, then tomorrow morning. If it hasn't been placed on a truck by then, I'd give FedEx a call and see what's up.

Play Gunstar Heroes. Though it's very easy you'll be so distressed over your delayed package that you'll suck tremendously at it, then you really will be a Gunstar Zero.

hahahaha! Well the only way I could do that right now is by emulation and I'm not doing that. I'm also on video game celebacy until I get my model 1, and I'm trying to collect and play in a semi-chronological order by release so Gunstar Heroes is a ways away. I know it seems a weird way to do things but I've wanted to do this for a long time. The very first game I play again WILL be Altered Beast, the original pack-in title, on a Model 1 genesis. Doesn't matter if it comes tomorrow or ten years from now.

Gunstar Zero, if you start to get worried about your package, I can always track it for you at work using FedEx Ship Manager. It usually gives more information than what you'd get from the web site.

I can PM you the tracking number if your in a position to do so. It just left that town in West Virginia an hour ago though so maybe it will get down here fast enough to be in tomorrow.

Eithier way thanks for the offer! People who are nice to me here might get to use me as a mule for imports when I go to Japan. =P

By the time you answer this it will probably be here... But on the tracking page it says in there "Shipment information sent to US Postal Service" does that mean the regular mail will be delivering the package, not Fedex?

Huh, I've never heard of that before. I know UPS and FedEx have contracts to ship but not deliver some USPS packages. But those are never marked with a UPS/FedEx tracking number IIRC. If you still need me to track it, let me know.

Well, the Genesis seems to work, it's just the bubble wrap that is defective. Perhaps a partial refund would be in order.

Hey Gunstar Zero, that's a gorgeous looking system :) You were wondering about the difference between the HDG and non-HDG versions of the Model 1 in the video, so I thought I'd tell you what I know. Some of the non-HDG models had the same sound circuit as the HDG model 1 systems, and some had the inferior early Model 2 circuit. You can tell by the rear of the system. On the good model, the sort of cut-out area where the outputs are is the same length as an HDG Model 1, and there's an empty space where the EXT port would be on an HDG. The version with the bad sound has the cut-out area shortened. From what I can see in the video, you have the model with the worse sound quality. Capn'crunch: so I was pretty close but I kept saying sound card out of force of habit. That might explain what I think is feedback coming from the headphones. I was going to make a new thread about it but that should explain it. Its not real terrible, and it still sounds great with headphones but when there is no music you can deffinitly hear some feedback.
