Whats the most your willing to pay for a game?

im currently bidding on a pal version of Daze before christmas and its at £140, im willing to pay around £180 for it as its massively rare. i got outbid at the last second last week on a wily wars auction which ended at £210. My bid was £205.

I've spend over £3000 in the last few month on mega drive games, its a massive vice for me. Used to collect a lot from 2001-2006 then had a break until earlier this year

The most i've paid for a game( i usually exclusively collect pal games) was for panzer dragoon saga on the saturn but on the mega drive i paid well over £100 for my beggar prince game


so.....whats the most your willing to part with for a wanted game?

Nothing. I have everything I want. A flash cart, a few real games that have region lock-out, and Virtua Racing.

I won't spend much more than $100, and the game had better be something I really must play. On average I spend less than $15 per game, though that has slowly crept up to $20 since I started picking up TG16/PCE/DUO games. I think the most I've spent in a year on gaming was around $2000, and that would have been a year I bought one or more consoles and all the amenities.

i wouldn't go anywhere near a flash cart, nothing like having an original game, box instructions etc. it just doesn't compare my friend, its like fucking a latex doll. yeah its fun, but not as good as a real woman.....

Otherwise I paid around $50 for a Pal Zero Kamikaze Squirrel (complete).

The most I've spent for a single game was $1,450 for a PAL T-Mek. Money doesn't matter to me, it's an investment, and I've got nothing better on which to spend it.

I don't know how much i would pay, but i do know that i was not willing to pay 300 euro's for that one MVS Samurai Spirits Special cart.

I'm pretty set on not spending anything more than original MSRP on any game. That's been the case for me since the beginning (and why I love collecting retro games). But since I'm a completist, I'm certain that sometime down the line (sometime soon, perhaps), I'll be breaking over $100 on several games. That is why I've set a maximum of $150, but only for rare and must have games. And since I've got a whole number of games to purchase for less than $10 or even $5 for the time being, I guess I'm set for a while anyways.

I'll be willing to go to for there asking price but also try to talk it down .
Games like eliminate down, musha, gley lancer, these are the type of games I'll bring out the big check to, but for games like fucking grind stormer, almost showing nothing exciting and being asked for $100's on eBay

fuck that, I rather wait till someone brings out an auction cause most don't even know about the game.

and YES I AGREE, owning a flash cart to store roms doesn't feel as good as actually owning the dam thing.

Flash carts and ROMs are enough for me. If you're a real gamer, you don't care about instruction manuals or boxes; you only care about playing the game.
I also have better things to spend money on.

A game has to be really, really good for me to pay over $50 for. I've only done that a few times for games like Dracula X and some other expensive imports.

The Neo Geo, however, is exempt from this cheapness. MOST of my games still didn't cost much since I have mostly MVS carts, but I can look at a Metal Slug 3 home cart selling for $350 and think "wow, what a good deal." One day, I will own a Garou home cart.

$220 is my limit on a wanted game, may be a lot but its nothing compare to neo geo collectors

or that lukemores guy who fucking collects neo 64 arcade boards.

Well i've been into neogeo forever, I also have bought serval arcade games day 1. So i'd say my limit is only limited to the ammount of money im making at the time and my desirer to play it. Most i've paid was $1700 for King of Fighter XI the first week it came out at arcades.

that's another thing, just cause you have some nice cash to spend doesn't mean it can't be spend on something you want every once in a while, it doesn't always have to be shoes, movies, watches. You have the money and everything else is find and payed out, its your little extra fun money basically.

Well, that´s a shitty attitude imo. I know the old games have made their money for the makers, but still... "real" gamers like to legally own what they play. Sure, I use ROMs too sometimes, but I also spend money on games when possible; if you just play games and think you have better things to spend money on, that´s low and disrespectful. If it ain´t worth the few dollars the old games usually cost, don´t play them.

For Mega Drive games back in the day I paid 60 - 70 Dollars roughly The most I spent for games in the 2000s is for Duke Nukem 3D, which cost me 75 Euros. Generally I buy my current gen games for up to 40 Euros today, mostly less. Prices sink so rapidly nowadays it´s not worth purchasing on day 1.

$59.95 is the most I'll pay.

I Second that notion. While I do own a Flash Cart myself (two actually, As a matter of fact), I prefer owning the Games As original Hardware. Simply owning the Rom... It just feels cheap, worthless Even - it cant't compare with holding an actual product in hand.

Most I've paid for a Mega Drive Game so far? I think it was 70 Euro in a japanese CIB version of Yu Yu Hashuko (I think I got Lucky here, I Know at least One other person that paid more for His copy)

My pockets are too shallow and my interests too wide for my usual numbers to interest anybody, but the gut feeling I operate by can be reduced to a formula: I'm willing to pay what I feel it's worth in play value plus once that again for rarity with completeness. Eg Batsugun is a game I don't own because its play value is at best $25 to me, that is I could easily find as much pleasure by spending $25 elsewhere (it really doesn't look that great to me); it's obviously rare enough to warrant $50 for a complete copy, but as that's only half what it sells for I'll probably never own it, which is quite fine, there are other games to own and play. An opposite exm would be Radiant SG, a game I'm faithful is worth its cost in play alone; it just comes down to having the money and a bit more shooter skill before I commit to it.

I used to have the real games. Then I thought, why? So I could have no room in my closet, under the bed? So I couldn't play a game because it was too hard to get out of the storage bag buried away? So I couldn't find the game I was looking for? I sold them all off and got the flash cart and I'm happy. A lot of money and space recovered. Also, it then became all about playing the games instead of the collecting aspect. To each their own I guess.

The most I would probably go is $150. $200 if it was something I really wanted, and would play the second I got it. I've spent @ 100 for a couple of Shmups

after which I can't justify the investment any more.

I think I'd go as high as 100 EUR per game, in some very rare cases. I really have other hobbies
in life besides gaming and there is only that much money I can spend. If a game is unobtainable
for the (personal opinion) huge amount of 100 EUR, I'd rather play with the ROM on my PC, thank
you very much. It's just not fair for something that small to cost that much, if one can download
and just play it.

Things like Panorama Cotton for example, looked at some videos, tried out the ROM, deleted and

It might depend on the age, but I actually meant other hobbies, not really crucial stuff that
everyone has to pay for like the apartment, insurances, etc. I'm a vinyl record nut and believe
me, you can spend the most exorbitant sums on phono cartridges, amplifiers and speakers.
And it actually makes very big difference if you get good expensive stuff. Whereas, if you
pay 100 EUR for a game or 300 EUR, it's still the same circuity, same plastic, same cheap
b/w manual (unless it's a Japanese game of course), etc. If a game is that expensive, I'll just
choose not to own it. It's only a game and it's not like you can't play it at all without buying it.

And do you really think MD carts will be that rare? There are tons of them, that's what matters,
not the age. Think about the Atari 2600, how much do the games go for these days? I don't
assume they are even close to the full retail price of modern games, probably most 2600 games
go for 1 to 10 bucks, just like MD games. It's not the age, it's the amount of copies available
out there that dictates the price for most titles. There are of course exceptions, like some stupid
ebayers who sell Sonic 1 and put RARE all over the description.

105$ for Popful Mail, it's far the most I've ever spent and I'm very satisfied.
Real gamers appreciate having the real thing, otherwise fire up any emulator and play. You don't even need a real genesis.

Perfect exm, this game is way overrated; pluperferfect would've been Twinkle Star Sprites, but sticking to Cotton you could get Cotton 2, the best of the Cottons, for half or less, and still have money left over for, say, the audiophile edition of a common lp.

Atari 2600 carts go for shocking little; if the seller's shipping fair a lot might go for 50 cents a cart; mind you these are the commonest titles and incomplete, but there were fewer 2600 carts than NES and NES are twice as much. So, yes, I do think MD carts will grow rarer, because all original hard copies will increase in value when new systems cease to be manufactured and everything's done by download. But they won't reach AES expence, much less vintage vinyl. And for those tech sheep out there credulous the next thing is always an improvement, nothing sounds like vinyl, not even like standard vinyl. Enjoy your mp3s.

I'm a gamer, not a collector. Real gamers care about the game, not the packaging.
Whether it's in ROM or cartridge format; they both play exactly the same. I don't see why it's a shitty attitude to prefer one above the other.
I buy my software if it's needed; CD keys, monthly fees, DLC. It's all good, but dishing out hundreds of dollars for sometimes a single retro game that I can play for free? Retro game prices are ridiculous.

You're right in some cases, but there are plenty of collectors that only care about owning the games without ever playing them. Some even keep their games sealed. What's the point of that?

That's what I find weird about sealed collectors - The profit that you can potentially make on a sealed item is hardly worth the time spent waiting for it to go up. The exceptions are amazingly few, so it's certainly not an ideal investment venture. However, i do think it's a fantastic hobby, and for people that don't mind dropping some money into their hobbies (who doesn't?), it's definately not the worst hobby you can put money into.

I think most people that drop money into retro gaming, whether they play the games or not, enjoy doing it at least at some basic level, and don't necessarily have a future gain in mind when they do spend money on it. In most cases, an "expensive" cib retro game is worth just as much as it cost when it was released, and most retro games in general are worth much less than that - The ones that do break the $100 mark are actually few and far between, especially when it comes to the Genesis, which IMO, makes the system fun and manageable to collect for.

Now, to answer the OP, I don't really have a strict limit in mind, but I do try to work within my budget. There's nothing that catches my gaming interest that is worth more than Panzer Dragoon Saga ($180-$300 cib), so I guess if I ever get around to getting it, that would be the most I currently would spend on a game, but I could probably count on one hand the games I'd be willing to spend more than a benjamin on.

I NEVER download MP3s or movies. Have not a one. If I like any particular song(s), I buy the physical album. If I want a movie, I purchase the DVD/Blu-Ray (even if I've never seen it before).

I believe all my hobbies to be investments; so digital garbage, no matter how much cheaper or more convenient, is not of any value to me. And I believe this is probably true for many of those who prefer the collector lifestyle over the transitory gamer who only cares about getting the game of the hour out of the way to make room for the next.

I'm just saying this to let you know that some people do seriously only purchase the physical - regardless of form. You should not make such a blanket statement so lightly. It is quite insulting to those of us who appreciate such things, and just as undeserved.

That's right about where I am. The only exception might be Pier Solar, I'd be willing to drop $100 for the reprint if I had expendable cash.
