Both of these series had 3 games released on the Genesis but Golden Axe 3 never made it here. But it also had 2 other arcade games (one which was ported to the Saturn) mulitple spin offs. SoR on the other hand hasn't received a new game since 3 on the Genesis. So we see where Sega's loyalties are to. Anyways which series do you feel is better on the Genesis?

Streets of Rage for me. Don't get me wrong, the Golden Axe series is great too, but SOR has something more exciting that keeps me coming back for more. It's just so well balanced.
Streets of Rage 2 is a better game than anything the Golden Axe franchise has to offer, hands down. Ancient knocked the ball out of the park and then burned down the stadium.
But as a series, I'm not sure. Streets of Rage 1 is a little janky - it's less playable these days than Golden Axe 1 and was heavily outdated by its own sequels. Streets of Rage 3 was sort of hit and miss, although it was better for sure than Golden Axe III. On the other hand, Golden Axe got the fantastic Revenge of Death Adder, and a neat RPG. So despite the brilliance of SoR2, Golden Axe is probably the better overall series.
I've got to go with Golden Axe. The first game in the Arcade and Genesis really took beat-em up hack 'n slashers to a new level with the magic system. Golden Axe 2 on Genesis was a really smooth sequel considering it was the same size as the first game, and I love Yuzo Koshiro's tunes. Revenge of Death Adder needed a home translation, dang would I have killed for it on the Sega CD or 32X. I still need to play more Axe Battler and Golden Axe Warrior.
The real reason I have to go with Golden Axe though is Beast Rider. It got a bad bunch of reviews from what I can only assume were a bunch of casual/non gamers. The parry/evade system and the combat AI in general is more advanced than I have ever seen. I honestly don't see what people see in games like Devil May Cry or Bayonetta in comparison to a game like Beast Rider. I guess mashing buttons and receiving "upgrades" is more entertaining than a challenging and complex combat mechanic that requires the player to be "in the mode" at all times.
Streets of Rage 1 and 2 were great games, and Streets of Rage 3 is a competent beat-em up, they just can't overtake four great Golden Axe games in my book.
As good as Golden Axe is I cannot look past the Streets Of Rage games. SoR 2 is as close to a perfect game as there has ever been made.
SoR 2 outdoes any Golden Axe game
Yeah Streets of Rage. Beat em ups are possibly my favorite genre which is a major reason I'm drawn to the genesis cause we got a LOT of them. But streets of rage has been my answer to questions like "Which classic series do you wish still had sequels being made?" and "What game franchise do you wish had an anime/movie etc.?" I find Golden Axe difficult to get through without 2 players (not impossible though) but SOR works either way. Its more addicting, I can play it back to back, and I find each installment as good as the last one. Unless someone said so and I missed it its worth pointing out that Fighting Force was originally going to be a SOR game, so saying it didn't go past the Genesis while true does contain that small technicality.
I have to say I am only considering what was on the GENSIS not anything else.
I never loved the characters and urban world of SoR, but the original Golden Axe alone, gameplay aside, makes the series legendarily epic.
Plus, as a fan of questy/adventure/rpg type games, I'd rather play Golden Axe Warrior than any of the beat em ups from either series. :p
Streets of Rage and it would have been an absolute raping if SOR 3 wasn't such a disappointment (24 megs why? wish they pulled a Golden Axe 2 and just redid Streets of Rage 2 with different backdrops).
Comparing the series isn't so fair considering the budget that SOR 2 and 3 had at 16 and 24 Meg. Considering GA3 was only 8-Meg
SoR by FAR. I find the Golden Axe games boring as all fuck. They make me think of crappy Conan the Barbarian rip offs with lame colour palettes, bad music, ugly sprites and awkward gameplay. The SoR games on the other hand are masterpieces. Vibrant colours, cool levels, neat looking enemies, awesome music and the playable charactes are cool.
Streets of Rage its definitely a much better series than Golden Axe
